Day Nine - The Black Hills
Return to Links Page
We have riden most of the main roads and decided to venture into some of the less know ones. We headed out to ride through a little town called Nemo. On the way we saw the signs for the Wonderland Caves, and decided to drop in for a look. After that we headed into Rapid City, we actually went straight throught the town directly to Ellingsworth Airforce base and did the tour. From there we rode through a pretty good thunderstorm, but was so hot we didn't bother with the rain gear, it was a welcome relief. We  headed back into Custer State park to ride the Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway again. Then stopped off in Hill City for some dinner and refreshments.
We had to venture down this dirt road to get there, this slowed down a lot of bike traffic, lots would not take their bike on these types of roads..

One of the reasons we took the tour is it was on an Airconditioned bus... it was another hot day. The tour was interesting as they talked about this huge Airforce base that once had four different Air commands operating from it, today it is down to one and it has been targeted for closure.
The cool part of the tour was that we got to go down into a Minute man missile silo and take a look around. It is a training site for the Minute Man III missiles
This is one of the support vehicles that is used to load the fuel and war heads (i think) into the missile.
And of coarse the B1 bomber...
