Chretien's Wrong Move

Well it happened.  Paul Martin Jr. finally was booted out of cabinet and lost his finance portfolio.  At issue was the almost long feud between Prime Minister Chretien and Martin and the scandals that have plagued the present Canadian government.

This move by Chretien was not only a vindictive and self-serving move, but a horrible political step.  Chretien's legacy will not be Trudeau's Charter of Rights or Lester Pearson's introduction of Canadian peacekeeping.

The only legacy that Chretien can claim is fiscal policy, in regards to the conquest of the national deficit and to a lesser degree, the economic boom that Canada has experienced.  But this legacy is linked with Paul Martin's keen and clever management of the Department of Finance.  Without Martin, the Canadian public can scarcely think of one thing to remember Chretien on.

Chretien will no doubt point to the national unity crisis of 1995, but in reality, he was no superhero for Canada as Trudeau been in 1980.  Chretien's entrance into open support for the federalist clause was fairly late, and if anyone disagrees with me, one would find that the PM isn't hugely popular among federalists in Quebec as well.

Chretien in good credence, appointed John Manley who has a similar outlook as Martin.  Manley however will never receive the title that Martin has received: that of aggressive deficit cutter.  Chretien in ditching Martin has lost any hope of a lasting legacy that the history books can discuss about.
