Save The gentle giants of the St. Lawrence!
GENTLE GIANTS THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION!

During the spring of 2004, a study was undertaken by several agencies of the US, Canadian, and the State of NY, on the numbers of the endangered St. Lawrence Manatee.  The findings were staggering.  NO MORE THAN 12 BREEDING PAIRS OF THESE GENTLE GIANTS ARE KNOWN TO EXIST IN THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER!

This is indeed staggering!

French explorers like Jaques Cartier in the 1600s described the river as teaming with these watery beasts  The Native Americans who dwelled on the banks of the St. Lawrence revered the Manatee, and made sure to use all parts of the animal when they hunted them.

But now, they are almost gone.  Over hunting, pollution, and boat/manatee collisions are thought to be the leading cause of this near extinction.  We at Save the St. Lawrence River Manatees believe that it APATHY that is killing our gentle Giants.  The US Senate has NEVER considered or discussed placing the St. Lawrence River Manatees on the endangered species list.  The state of NY REFUSES to institute manatee awareness in any of its boating safety courses.  AND, WORST OF ALL, THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT STILL ALLOWS THE HUNTING OF ST. LAWRENCE RIVER MANATEES IN CERTAIN RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES!!!!

This situation is outrageous.  We at the Non Profit Save the St. Lawrence River Manatees urge every American to immediately contact their elected representative, before its too late.  Please, help of save these beautiful watery beasts from sure extinction now!
