I was born on 13 May 1956 in Zimbabwe's second biggest city, the city of
Bulawayo. After completing my secondary education at Gifford High School I was
granted a City of Bulawayo cadetship to attend the University of Zimbabwe to read
a Civil Engineering (Honours) degree.
On completion of university I did one year National Service in the Air Force of
Zimbabwe attaining the rank of sergeant.
I returned to Bulawayo to work for the local Municipality and built several
bridges and left after holding the posts of Bridge and Structural Engineer and
Traffic Engineer. I spent some time with an international computer
company ICL, before joining Datlabs - a local Pharmaceutical company. I
was able to develop their tabletting, wets and computer systems before being
employed by a local Fastener manufacturer - BMA Fasteners. Again I was
able to develop their manufacturing techniques and computer systems.
In 1999 I was transferred within the holding company to be the Divisional
Managing Director of one of the three operating Divisions of the Building and
Construction Materials Division of the public company TH Zimbabwe. The
company under my control, Turnall Fibre Cement, employs 1050 people on two
sites - Bulawayo and Harare, and manufactures fibre cement roof sheets and
pipes.
I am married to Sandy who is my strong right arm. We have four
children - Wendy (17) - spending a year in Australia on Rotary Youth
Exchange; Mark (14) - a budding sportsman who has represented the country
in triathalon and is a national swimmer; and twin girls Kristin and Lauren
(7). We have shared the privileges of serving our local Rotary
club, Bulawayo South, as President and Sandy and I were conferred with Paul
Harris Fellowships for our contributions in that year.
My interests include long distance road running (completed 7 consecutive
Comrades Marathons - 90km), Rotary (serve on District Youth Exchange
committee), am a local preacher in the Methodist Church and chair the
professional interview panel of Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers. I am also
the National Chairman of Evangelism Explosion (Zimbabwe)
I enjoy the outdoors and water ski and abseil when I have the
opportunity. I have an avid interest in developing people and production
and computer systems. You can find out more about my family at www.geocities.com/phil_w_zim or
