Drone is an episode I feel is over-rated by a lot of other people. Sure its good, but I find that while the plot is great for Seven, its a little hard to believe how the Borg is created. I know, I know, Star Trek is not real, what I mean is that given what we have discovered about the technology and using some common sense, the creation of this Borg isnt plausible.
How could the technology create such a complex amount of machinery from just a few nanoprobes? Why didnt the assimilated crewmember actually be assimilated in the typical fashion? How did sampling the crewmans DNA create organic material from machinery? Why did the Borg have 29th Century technology?
The last one is the most confusing one for me. So the Docs mobile emitter is 29th Century, but how does that create a super advanced Borg with onboard transporters etc etc. I didnt realize Doc was so powerful!
But accepting the fact that the Drone was created, whatever the circumstances, this still tells a very good, and in parts a powerful story, about Seven being Mum.
Seven being Mum was a heart-warming thing to watch. Teaching the drone, named One (which is why I get this episode confused with One), about life on Voyager and being proud of Ones accomplishments and how he fits in well with the crew.
A very touching scene is when One first comes out of his growing stage and Seven must give him his orders and his designation. One is extremely dangerous and a potential threat to Voyager and yet he has a child like innocence conveyed well by J. Paul Boehmer (Good ole Suder).
As One starts to fit in, he accidently summons a Borg Sphere that tries to harness the 29th Century technology, and he sacrifices himself for Voyager.
One had potential to stay on the ship for a while longer though. The same fate couldve been suffered, and it wouldve packed a more emotional punch, if that where possible, because the scene where he dies is very sad indeed. Such Borg arrogance, placing a forcefield up so he cant be treated, his Mother looking at him in anguish.
Drone was filled with a lot of great scenes, like Is it true you make them call you Captain Kim?" and Smile, like I know you can! and other more serious scenes like Your hurting me. Ive noticed seriousness and humor are combined a great deal so far this season.
So Drone is a great episode, but its main plot device is severely flawed. But I can look past that because there are a number of other ways the same events couldve happened. It great drama, but bad science. |
