As a story of the Leonardo Da Vinci hologram trying to unravel the mysteries and technological wonders of the real world, Concerning Flight succeeds, but as a story of trying to get the stolen Computer processor back, this episode flunks.
Why did we need the Get the Computer Processor from some really stupid villains story? It was ridiculous and contrived. First there was the ridiculous battle at the beginning. In Dragons Teeth Voyager destroys a whole bunch of similar looking ships with ease. I know the Vaadwaar ships where a lot older, but those pirates ships where puny.
Then the pirates didnt realize that Voyager was in orbit and trying to get their parts back. And finally those stupid pirates at the end couldnt guard their base and later ran after the Flying ship despite the fact they have weapons? Those are points very important to the story, well that part of the story, which lets it down.
Leonardo da Vinci is a fascinating character, in the real form and as a holo-character on Voyager. And his interpretations of all the weird going-ons are amusing. There is a mechanical women trapped inside is how he interprets the Computer and how it talks. Da Vinci is played well too by an actor of Sliders.
Janeways line about the Sparrows not having a big enough mind to comprehend things is great, and shows how good that part of the story is, and how much better it couldve been.
Wouldnt it have been better if, maybe, Voyager had somehow had a malfunction that caused Da Vinci to take over the EMH, maybe involving Voyager being taken over and Da Vinci helping to re-take the ship? That way the same points couldve been made, and a lot more realistically than is done here.
Seven of Nine had good scenes. She certainly must learn more politeness! And the Doc being portrayed as the Gossip King was perfect!
The scene where Leonardo da Vinci and Janeway are on the flying machine looks quite good, and despite the silliness of those battle scenes some of them still looked very good.
Its a pity, two Voyager episodes in a row now have been big wastes of oppertunities. All we can hope for know is a follow-up to this, possibly making these events more worthwhile. |
