ASA Pikesville Frenzy
The Lady Panthers opened their 2004 campaign with a respectable showing in the Pikesville Frenzy, finishing 2-1. The 1st game started out as a real pitchers duel as the Panthers Brianna J. and the pitcher from the Mt. Vernon Vipers squad combined to strike out 9 of the first 10 'hitters'. The Panthers finally broke through in the 4th scoring on a wild pitch. This seemed to rattle the Mt Vernon pitcher and the Panthers hitters seized the moment, pounding out 8 hits.  Lead by Gabby D. who had 3 hits and a host of Lady Panthers who chipped in with 1 each.  With the score 8 - 1, the Panthers got a little casual and had to hang on for an 9-6 victory. All in all it was a well played 1st game for the Cats.

The long wait between games was a chance for the ladies to relax as well as battle the millions of cicadas that swarmed the area. The 2nd game saw the Panthers take on a very good Middleton Mashers team from Frederick Md. Jelly A. baffled the Mashers for 4 innings, but the defense behind her must have been watching for cicadas as they commited blunder after blunder. Ali S. came in and pitched the final 3 innings, shutting down the Mashers. While the defense collapsed, the offense was explosive.  Led by Katie M. who crushed a back braking home run and Brittney who hit a booming double to put the Panthers on top for good 8-5. If the Lady Cat's can sure up the defense, they'll be roaring in the upcoming events.

On Sunday, the Panthers ran into a buzz saw as the pitcher from the Cockeysville Sting shutdown the offense. Brianna J. got the call and struggled early before finding her groove. But it was the defense once again that came up empty. Playing in these types of events, errors must be kept to a minimum as good teams will capitalize on our mistakes. The final score of 6-2 should have been much closer - but close won't enable us to advance on Sunday's.  Practices need to become more intense on the defensive side. With a little hard work the Panthers should be purring .

Next tournament up for the Lady Panthers will be the Preston Ford Invitational in Easton MD on June 12 and 13th, which has been designated a cicada free zone. Go Cats !!
