Same genus as the Temmincks but much larger and brilliantly colored with occeli covering most of his body.  His head in black feather with a gradual tapering into brilliant red, the horns and bib set this guy off at breeding time and none can compare.  His display is something to see and his calls are exciting to listen to as he makes himself appear larger for the hens admiration while circling her.  The hen is much larger than the Temmincks and much lighter on the chest than her counterpart.  Of the four different pairs we have owned over the years, they for some reason bred not on the second year but the third.  Not sure if this is luck, location, or the diet at the time.  As with the Temmincks, we take the first clutch of eggs and leave the second for them to raise, we have not been dissapointed these last few years as they make excellent parents.  We give plenty of fruit and vegetables at least three times a week and with the summer months grass clippings and dandelions on a daily basis.  Some fruit and vegetables include bananas, apples, grapes, and peanuts since these are some of their favorites with melons, pumpkins, and squash as a seasonal food when available here locally.  They do share quarters with either of the Goldens and have had them with both Edwards and the White Crested Kalij with no problems even with chicks present in their pens.  Incubation 28 days.
