Erik broke the kiss even though he knew Christine would be disappointed.
"What's wrong, Erik?" She asked looking at him with pleading eyes.
"We shouldn't be doing this. You shouldn't get involved with me. And I should know that you would never want to be with me." He said, looking down. She touched his chin and made his eyes gaze into hers.
"I love you, Erik. I do. How can I make you believe me?" She said, keeping her eyes locked with his.
"You deserve better then me."
"But what I want is you." She kissed him on his cheek and rested her head on the pillow. Erik was lost for words and just sat there. He did love her, he just couldn't say it. Would it make her happy? As if she had read his thoughts she said,
"Do you love me, Erik?" She asked hopefully.
"Ium"
"Yes or no?" "Y-yes." He managed to say quietly. She jumped up and hugged him. "I guess that answers all my questions" he said to himself and smiled. He quickly took the smile off his face, but she had seen it.
"You have a sweet smile. Even though some of it is covered." She pointed to the white mask, which covered his face. He held his breath, realizing it was too good to be true.
"But I still love you." She laid back down again, her headache getting worse. She put her hand to it. Even in the dim candle light Erik could see she was pale.
"You need rest, Christine. You have rehearsal in the morning." HE got up and started to walk out the door but she stopped him.
"Erik," She called his name from the bed, "Sing to me, Erik." She said and closed her eyes.
"Well, uh, what shall I sing then?"
"Anything. Just hearing your voice makes me feel like nothing is wrong in the world." He started to sing a soft song to her. She fell asleep shortly, and he looked at her.
"Christine, you are my angel." He kissed her softly and left the room.
