Chapter Twelve: Is This Living?

With feasting and dancing and song,
tonight in celebration

Raoul looked down on his month old child as she looked up at him.

What a beautiful little girl they were in possession of, he realized as the Priest blessed her in front of the church. Today the little child was being baptized.

Her elegant white dress was falling around her as she was silent and the Priest did his services.

When they were finished, to society's shock, there was no social gathering or event hosted by the two prominent figures.

Some said that the Vicomtess has cheated on her husband, and the child, Danielle, was born a bastard only to be raised in shrouds of secrecy.

Others with less cynical views believed that the Vicomtess birth had been so terrible she was still recovering. She had seemed still recovering even as she stood before God with her child.

Whatever the reasons the rumours were fallen on deaf ears, for Raoul and Christine chose to ignore the wretchedness of everyone else.

Raoul helped Christine up into the carriage and then past her the child. Silently he rose himself in, gave Christine a brief smile and signalled for the driver to take them home.

The ride was a good 20 minutes and though the tiny cries of Danielle rang through the air, the trip was rather silent.

Raoul and Christine were not fighting anymore and had become rather civil, not just for the sake of little Danielle, but because they found something in common by loving her.

Yes, civility, it was eating him alive. To be honest, he would have rather been screaming, fighting, hating, doing anything but being civil.

It was a rather numb feeling, a feeling of nothing. No love, no hate, though he was sure he still harboured those feelings somewhere.

He still loved her; he would still love her until the day he died. However things had changed, no longer did she look at him with the adoration and unquestioning love she had on her wedding day.

Now her kisses and affections were shrouded with mixed feelings and became too painful for both, therefore leaving them not to be given any longer.

"What happened at the meeting at the factory the day Danielle was born?" Christine asked, breaking through Raoul' silent barrier.

"Well, I had told them I couldn't support a dying operation, and dying it was. I told them I now had a wife and daughter to take care of, and that is when I was summoned by Charlotte."

"Really? That is rather sad, but I'm sure it had to be done." Christine said rather sterilely.

She had just asked to fill the void that Danielle had been trying to as well, it was time she did her part, and for poor Danielle's voice would soon be ruined!

"I have to go away again..." Raoul said, hoping it would spark some kind of emotion out of her.

"For how long?" Christine said without any emotion, she was smiling down at the small girl on her lap.

"A few days," Raoul said lying. He couldn't stand it. He had to get away from this heaven that he could not touch.

He planned to merely retreat to a small hotel a few Ville's away and just stay there for a few nights.

"Oh, alright... petite enfant petite enfant... don la bras du ta mre..." Christine sang to her.

Raoul went back to looking in front of him. They couldn't keep living like this. He had seen it done so many times; he would not relive his father and mothers marriage.

He would go away, and figure out what to do before he got back.

His eyes will find me there!
Those eyes that burn

Erik quickly walked his way through the forest, which had become quite dead. October had here and gone, now all that was left was November's cold sting.

He laughed to himself about how easy it was to be cloaked with invisibility.

Of course he could not achieve full invisibility, but the fact he could go and watch the couple chrysene their child, then he had almost perfected the art.

Little Danielle de Changy.

It had a nice ring to it he agreed, and the child's indescribable beauty was already to be seen. A tuff of dark hair covering her small head with eyes as blue as her mothers.

He noticed the stiffness between the parents however.

What is this? He asked himself, don't tell me paradise has been lost...

Don't tell me I gave her up so that they could live like that! He growled.

I gave up my life! Music, violence, the promise of death, morphine... all of it so I could live longer and watch her live out her days, I would rather die then see her unhappy! He fumed.

As he reached his cabin he noticed the carriage had not left the de Changy estate.

Instead, Raoul had a satchel with him and got into it, as Christine stood at the door with the small child.

She looked neither sad nor happy to see him leaving her, which disturbed him.

When did she become so indifferent? It had only been a year and the lover's marriage was already in shambles.

What had happened to the lovely picnics he would witness out door? What happened to the playful bantering, and dancing?

Order your fine horses
Be with them at the door

Christine watched all the servants quietly exit her presence and she smiled at each one as they left her to her home.

Charlotte and Michelle stood by the stairs looking at their Madame.

"Girls! You have lived here a very long time, are you ever going to go out and experience life, other then stay with me."

Charlotte and Michelle looked at each other and then back to Christine.

"We will never leave you..." Michelle said speaking on behalf of both of them.

"Alright, well if you insist on staying, I am going for a ride... I wont be back for a few hours so make sure Danielle is taken care of girls." She said faintly smiling.

Slowly she went out to the stables and found Phantom ready to be taken for a long run.

"Come Phantom," She said to her beautiful horse and mounted him.

Quickly she took off and let her mind drift as well.

It was all becoming too hard. Raoul and her needed some time to figure out what they were going to do. Why was everything such a difficult decision? Why hadn't she thought of the opera again?

It had been an hour into her ride when the carriage had come up beside her.

"Come Madame, it has to do with your child! She has taken ill!" the driver told Christine, and she, panicked, abandoned her horse and rushed into the carriage.

When it begins to drive down the road, though her mind was filled with grief about little Dani, she noticed something was wrong.

"The house is back that way!" She called to the driver, but he continued to drive at full speed away from her estate.
