Jacob Have I Loved

(published 1980)

The back of the book proclaimed it as "a novel of one girl's search for acceptance," and from what I had seen it looked like a typical book of girl-growing-up-and-feels-left-out, maybe an instance or two of unrequited love, and all would turn out right in the end. It ended up being one of those books that I obviously am not able to understand. I like books that end neatly, tying up all the loose ends. I don't mind tragic endings, it's open endings I despise. And this book had the most open ending of all time. Maybe in another few years I'll enjoy it more . . . I've heard so much praise for it . . . but right now I can't understand what all the fuss is about.
