What an interesting movie. This is one of the earliest examples of German expressionism, and it was mentioned that Tim Burton borrowed most of his directing methods from these films, and I could definitely see that in here. However, I'm not sure the melodramatic style of the acting set very well with me. Yes, it was what was expected and considered good at the time, but it's just really difficult for me as a modern film viewer to get past that. I did like the overall arc of the story, and many individual moments made me go, "Ooh, that was kind of cool." So... sort of an in-between review. Higher if I can figure out how to enjoy it without being bothered by the acting.
