Long regarded as an American classic, I found this book only mediocre. It was only a moderately long book but by the time I'd finished, I felt like I'd been reading it forever. Maybe it's the fact that is covers several years of Francie's life. Also, at the end, I felt empty, like there should have been more, loose ends wrapped up. It wasn't a very satisfying book to read . . . it wasn't supposed to be depressing, but it depressed me, even more than morbid books like The Rag and Bone Shop by Robert Cormier . . . I'm not sure how this could have been changed, but I would have to say I'm not a huge fan of this book.
