Jacksonville City Schools
HIV/AIDS Prevention Program
The Coordinated School Health Program of Jacksonville City Schools contains strategies which have proven to be a model program in the State of Alabama. The HIV/AIDS Prevention Program at Jacksonville High School was developed by Sue Jones, former Health Educator at Jacksonville High School, and Tom Robertson, HIV/AIDS Coordinator, Public Health Area 6. The program was featured in a National Satellite Teleconference, in conjunction with the 2001 Alabama AIDS Symposium.
The program is based on a youth led approach, which emphasizes partnerships between Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), other community agencies, and the schools. The program seeks to promote:
- Youth involvement in the community planning process.
- Abstinence based peer education programs for the prevention of HIV/AIDS, tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
- Peer led prevention activities and awareness events to provide youth with essential information, skills, and support.
- Implementation of an elective class for the purpose of educating, training, and supporting this youth led initiative.
In an effort to replicate Jacksonville City Schools' HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, Sue Jones, currently a promotional consultant with the AIDS Service Center, is available to:
- Promote partnerships between community agencies and schools for youth involvement in prevention efforts.
- Present the project to Alabama State Department of Education (ASDE) and ADPH workshops, community organizations, and other interested groups.
- Schedule and meet with key individuals in schools systems across the state of Alabama to provide program information and encourage implementation of the elective class.
- Provide teacher training, resources, and support through the In-Service Education Centers to teachers involved in implementation of the project.
