- vaguely associated with colonial styles
- tend to be symmetrical
- pronounced centered front door
- one substyle employs (Dutch) gambrel barn shaped roof

~ CRAFTSMAN ~
- reaction to detailed Victorian styles
- low pitched gable roof with wide eaves and exposed beams
- front porch supported by tapered square wood or stone columns

~ GOTHIC REVIVAL ~
- steeply pitched roofline with cross gables
- windows or window hoods are often peaked
- decorative verge boards in the gable eaves

~ GREEK REVIVAL ~
- symmetrical floorplan
- low pitch gable roof
- very wide band of trim under roofline (represents classical entablature/frieze)
- Greek columns or pilasters in corners, or sometimes only a return

~ ITALIANATE ~
- symmetrical floorplant
- low pitch roof with wide overhanging eaves
- decorative brackets beneath eaves
- tall, narrow windows, frequently with elaborate crowns
- some have square cupolas in middle of hipped roof

~ PRAIRIE ~
- symmetrical
- simple decoration
- wide eaves
- cube shaped Four Square is one substyle

~ QUEEN ANNE ~
- steeply pitched roof, with multiple gables
- asymmetrical fa�ade
- partial to wrap around porch, often with turned spindlework
- bay windows
- walls a mixture of clapboard, shingles, decorative woodwork
- some have towers

~ SECOND EMPIRE ~
- Mansard roof (dual-pitched, hipped)
- Dormer windows on steep lower roof slope
- decorative brackets beneath eaves

~ SHINGLE ~
- greater user of wood shingle on walls
- fewer decorative elements
- decoration tends to be with patterns in the wood shingles themselves
