Hare: Michelle Mason & John McCawley

Ah, a lovely day for a hash, especially after all the rainy weather we have been having. Got to get down to the run site in plenty of time, knowing how keen “Big Foot” McCawley is on keeping up the Petaling hash traditions, particularly the 4.30pm prompt start.

Arrived in plenty of time and greeted by a good turn out. Even those who had been to the pub had got there on time ready for the start. Good to see that another old Petaling tradition of Larry with a Labrador was also being maintained. 4.30, 5.00 came and went but no sign of the hares. Even the McDonalds who did not get arrive until 5.15 were there for the start. Eventually John appeared and got us off at 5.20.

Set off up a hill then left along a path. First 4 checks were close together and intentionally easy to break. At each check the pack were brought together to hear a passage on Winnie the Pooh (we were in A A Milne country) well read by Monty. The final easy check provided a glorious view and the hares met us with drinks to toast the memory of Nick and have a group photo.

Then the main hash started with a long run on a path the turned up through a wood with Martino and Larry towards the front. Reached check 6 by a new ‘sign’ for rambutans and durians. Ah the memories. After following a falsie, the back check was broken and the pack continued through more woods and ferns to reach check 7. Pack disappeared in all directions trying to find the trail but without success. Eventually the pack gave up and started home when John appeared sweeping up and said that we were on the right trail but that someone must have removed the flour!!! Not convinced at all but eventually the trail was found after following John’s directions. Check 8 was found and broken left. Long run through a small valley criss crossing a stream through to check 9 where Monty gave one more reading from Winnie the Pooh.

On on was in Michelle’s house in Tunbridge Wells. Great Indian food brought in and plenty of it, even those who turned up late managed to get enough. Len acted as RA and as expected John had plenty of on downs. Other sinners included the McDonalds (late arrivals), Winn, Mee Sing and Sim (taking too long to take photos), John Holmes (destroying English heather) and John H again and Drain Oil (for not making the check to hear Monty’s readings). Junior hashers were also given on downs, told several jokes (most of which reflected badly on their parents) and were given Winnie the Pooh presents.

Overall a great day, thanks again to Michelle and John.
