Michael graduated from UP Los Banos in the early '80s. An achiever, he completed his M.S. at South Dakota State University and his Ph.D at the University of Nebraska in 1987 and 1992, respectively.
Assistant Professor Mike Catangui is the Extension Entomologist for South Dakota. He is the primary contact person for any issues
related to insects that affect crops, livestock, home gardens, buildings, and human health. The public may send specimens to him for identification, biological information, and control recommendations. He also provides information on beneficial and aesthetic insects. Information can be accessed at the SDSU Extension Entomology Homepage. Dr. Catangui's current extension and research activities include investigating the performance of biotechnology-enhanced corn to control the European corn borer, economic thresholds of grasshoppers on soybeans, the impact of alfalfa weevils and potato leafhoppers on alfalfa quality, biology of the sunflower midge, and the efficacy of insecticides in controlling insects of various crops.
He is thesis advisor to one graduate student and a member in the graduate committees of four other graduate students. He is also a member of various state committees on biological control, grasshopper management, and exotic insect pests. During the gardening season, he is the entomology panelist in �Garden Line,� a weekly program on SD Public Television.
