After viewing the marvellous chunks of ice at Portage, we proceeded along the Seward Highway until we came to the Hope turnoff. Hope was a gold mining town over 100 years ago. It was here that we managed to buy some milk, potatoes, and get our fishing licenses from a nice lady named Velma. Here is a picture of her in front of her little liquor store where she kept her fishing licenses. Velma has lived in Hope for 35 years..
And here is the general store in Hope.

Velma gave us some advice on where to fish and purchase a gold pan for panning in Ressurection Creek. As luck would have it, we didn't find any gold or catch any fish here. Remarkably, Hope still has a population of about 70 people. Most are trappers and miners, and a few cater to the tourist economy by selling gold, carved horns and other native artwork.
