Outline for matter unit:

Format for outline:
Lesson #- Title and focus, computer integration, quick overview, objectives from NC state curriculum

  • Lesson 2 - Focus on Solids.  What are they? -I will show a powerpoint explaining whatt solids are in small groups.(classroom computer)  - We will talk about examples of solids and what they are.  We will also use a visual demonstration to show how the molecues of a solid are packed tight together. (Science objective 3.01 and 3.04/ Computer objective 2.09)

  •
  • Lesson 3 -Focus on Liquids.  Powerpoint explaining what liquids are (Classroom Computer)- This lesson will be  very similar to the solids lesson except it will focus on liquids.  (Science objective 3.01 and 3.04/ Computer objective 2.09)

  •
  • Lesson 4 - Focus on Gas- Powerpoint explaining what gases are (Classroom Computer) -  This lesson will be very similar to the solids and liquids lessons except it will focus on gases.  (Science objective 3.01and 3.04/ Computer objective 2.09)

  •
  • Lesson 5- Air activities.- Look at a website about air (Computer lab)-  This lesson will have several hands on activites that show us how air takes up space.  This will help clarify the idea of gases since it is abstract for the age group. (Science objective 3.01 and 3.04/ Computer objective 1.03)

  •
  • Lesson 6- How do I know where the matter fits?-  Create a spreadsheet as a class (Computer Lab)- We will use several different tests that help us to classify different types of matter.  We will first predice and then we will then put the predictions and results of this test into a spreadsheet.            ( Science objective 3.01 and 3.04/ Computer 2.03)

  •
  • Lesson 7- Oobleck (Gak)- NONE-  We will be making the creation of oobleck.  This is a substance that has properties of more than 1 type of matter.  We will talk about where it fits and how it has properties of both a liquid and a solid. ( Science objective 3.01, 3.04 and 3.06 )

  •
  • Lesson 8- Changes in state by adding heat.- We will record the temperature of the object before and after adding heat on the smart board(Computer Lab)- We will take several objects and observe the changes that happen when we add heat.  We can take water through all 3 states and we will use other substances as well.  (Science objective 3.02 and 3.03/ Computer objective 2.03)

  •
  • Lesson 9- Changes in state by adding cold- We will recored the temperature of the object before and after adding cold on a smart board (Computer Lab) - This lesson will be similar to lesson 8 except we will observe changes by cold rather than heat.  (Science objective 3.02 and 3.03/ Computer objective 2.03)

  •
  • Lesson 10- Guest Speaker- Program used to record temperature on laptops- Ms. Patricia Bricker will be co-teaching  a lesson using a graphing tool for laptops.  We will be graphing the temperature as ice melts as well as other objects as welll.  (Science objective 3.02 and 3.03/ Computer objective 2.03)

  • Lesson 11- Experiments and Review- NONE- We will be doing some experiments that we have not yet had a chance to do and we will also have some review games and activities.  (Science Compentency Goal 3 ALL)
