2. What is taught in 2nd grade?
Second grade is a big year. In science
we cover 4 major topics: matter, animal life cycles, sound, and
weather.
In math we start moving toward more complicated problems, double digit
addition and subtraction, simple fractions, money, time, and
regrouping.
In reading many students will be moving into simple chapter books and
reading
longer stories. Comprehension of what is read begins to be
impariative
in the reading process. In social studies we begin to look at how
the world around us works. We will compare different areas as
well
as past and present ideas. More specific information about second
grade curriculum can be found on the NC Public Schools Curriculum web
page.
Follow this link: State
Curriculum , and click on the appropriate subject and grade level.
3. What is your homework policy?
I encourage all students to read every night. On Monday's
or the first day we are in school, I will also send home a spelling
list.
Tests for spelling will be given on Friday's. Studying those
words
each night will help the student on thier weekly test. On some
nights
I will also include a short math activity. All homework will be
review.
I will not send something that is new home as homework. If a
student
is struggling with a certain activity, I will make a note in their
folder
that they could use some extra help at home, and give some suggested
activities.

5. What materials will my student
need?

These will be used for: Math Journals, Science Journals, Writing
Journals, Homework Folders, Work folders, Classroom Assignments,
and other classroom activities.
6. What is the snack policy in your
classroom?
In our classroom we will have snack as a
class. If you plan to send snack, please send enough for the
entire class. It is not fair for some students to have snack
while others have nothing. As long as we have enough snack for
everyone, we will have a daily snack time for the students.
7. What time should my student
arrive at school?
The
school day begins at 8:15. Breakfast is served from
7:30-8:00. If your student arrives after 8:15 they will be
counted tardy. However, most teachers have morning work that they
like for the students to finish before this 8:15 time. In our
class this year, we will also be having our specials at 8:15 almost
daily. If your child arrives late they will be missing these
activities and will not be able to make them up. It is very important
for students to be here when we start our day so that they do not miss
anything that we are doing.
