The Trojan Times Review #5
April 14, 2005

Overall, this issue was pretty good compared to past ones. Kudos to the newspaper staff. However, I have some general criticisms:

-Instead of writing solely on the happy aspects of Junior Prom and Junior Miss, couldn't you have done some investigation and research regarding the controversy surrounding them (students drinking on both counts)? I suspect the school would not let you... but did you try?

-A word of advice regarding the News Briefs... prom is APRIL 23, not MAY 23...

-The editorial "Good enough: The glorification of stupidity" had a worthy message, but I think it would have had more impact on students if it were tied to an example in real life. I can see how some students might have trouble understanding the concept (ironic given the article's subject).

-Regarding "Evolutionists: How did your consience evolve?", I think it would be an interesting concept to pick two students (not just on the newspaper staff) every issue and have them write opposing articles regarding one controversial subject and then print both articles side-by-side on the same page. In terms of the editorial in this issue, while I don't agree with it, I found it informative regarding the beliefs of creationists; in addition, the author did an excellent job of explaining her views.

-"Harmless Holiday: St. Patrick's Day" irked me a little. While the author meant well, I thought that stating that everyone "needs to wear green" was going a little overboard given the roots of the holiday, which (to my surprise and pleasure) were explained in an article on page eight. Why should non-Christians, or even non-Catholics, be required to wear green in celebration of a man whose "good deeds" were spreading Christianity around Europe? Besides that, aren't these two articles a little late given that this issue was released in April?

-Hey... Emily's van, "Fanny," isn't a junker! IT'S A COOL VAN, DAMMIT!

-According to the horoscope, EVERYONE will have a bad hair day on April 23 (PROM OMGWTFBBQ!?). Everyone should wear his or her hat that day, I guess.

-Hey... those who run the music pages/articles... you should do a spotlight on the Tea House. It's a great local venue that really could use some publicity.
