"Late Arrival vs. Sheer Idiocy"
by: Evey
When semester [and the subsequent scramble for schedule changes] came this year, I was excited with the prospect of dropping my first period class. It wasn't a two-semester class, and I am among the world's biggest fans of sleeping in.

The start of second semester brought on stricter rules about where students are allowed to park, but I hardly paid attention. I always just parked in senior parking anyway. Sure, not allowing us to park behind the building intrigued me, but I'm sure they have their reasons for it.

And now for the meat of this article. I didn't realize until that first day of second semester just how many kids were forced to relocate parking by these new rules. When I pulled into the parking lot five minutes before the start of second period, I was slightly horrified. There were almost no parking spaces available! After circling the parking lot for about four of my precious five minutes, I was forced to park my car against the fence on the soccer field and then dash to the doors, hoping to make it to class on time.

Of course, when I finally got to the doors, there was the big, beautiful, blue notice on them reminding delinquents like myself that the doors were locked sharply at 8:15 every morning. I didn't even arrive at school until 8:40.

I was forced to walk around the school to the main entrance, where we're always supposed to check in with the concerned secretaries. But as I let myself in (late for second period already), I noticed nobody in the hallways. No hall moniter. No secretaries looking concerned about me in their respective windows. They weren't even
in their respective windows. So, I simply gritted my teeth and continued onto class.

The point I wish to present with this article is this: why does the school go to all the trouble or hiring a school cop when he doesn't even spend the entire day at school? We're already two and a half weeks into this semester, I believe I've only seen his car in his special parking spot once since semester started.

I'm not here to criticize the resource officer's job; I just wish I understood what he was doing. He could easiliy stand at the door down by the Arena and monitor those who come in to school after first period, instead of forcing us to walk all the way around the building to get in the main door, when the secretaries never even pay attention to us. I simply don't see the point.

The fact that it's the middle of winter sure isn't helping. Hello, it's cold outside right now. Especially at 8:40 in the morning. I'm sure this wouldn't be such a big issue for me if I was walking around the building in good weather, but the fact still remains that I'm not. I've been trying to bring this to the attention of the administration for some time, but to no avail. I hope to have better luck in the future.
