Myspace: Degeneration of Communication

Written by Kage ite

I have been told that I have an addictive personality. This doesn't mean that people can't get enough of me or anything; it simply means that I am easily attached. Once I form that attachment, it can be very difficult to sever.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a Myspace addict. If you will, a Myspace Whore. Everyday after school, my first stop is to my laptop. There I immediately check to see if I have any new messages or comments. After I have taken care of that, I move on to other websites. I always make sure to leave Myspace up in a seperate window or tab. Periodically I will return and reload my home page to see if there is anything new. This usually remains the pattern for about three hours.

Every so often, I will step back and look at the situation. There is a very obvious flaw, which can easily be summed up by a quote from the American Classic, Wayne's World. "It's sucking my will to live!" Indeed, it is. I will be in the middle of class and spontaneously want to get online - ASAP. I will spend the day daydreaming about my newest profile design or wondering whether that nameless hottie in Canada or New Jersey, who I have never really met, has accepted my friend request yet. When this happens (and it happens often), I feel disgusted with myself. I have over fifteen pages of 'friends.' These are people who rarely talk to me, and they live on the other side of America. That is if they even live in America.

It is somewhat comforting to know I am not alone. Almost everywhere I go, I hear others talking about the website. It is the eighth most visited website in the world, and I'm their number one sucker. There have been times when I am at a large gathering of teens and a person I have never seen in real life will approach me and tell me we are life long Myspace friends. One time they even replied to one of my bulletins!

Myspace is good for all sorts of things. It is a favorite website in Post Falls for posting student's drunk/krunk pictures, but that's another article.

I guess it's not all bad. Many of the people I now consider good friends I would not know if we had not started talking online. Even some of the people who live in Oregon or Iowa talk back sometimes. Now, if you will excuse me, I just posted some new pictures on my Myspace, and I want see if anyone has commented them yet.
