| In the fourth AFL championship game, San Diego's famous offense made mincemeat out of Boston's heralded defense. On the second play from scrimmage, Keith Lincoln took a handoff and burst through the middle of the Boston defense for a 56 yard gain. Tobin Rote's quarterback sneak 7 plays later gave San Diego a quick 7-0 lead. As soon as the Chargers got the ball back, Lincoln headed around end for a 67 yard touchdown run, making the score 14-0. The Patriots came back with a quick touchdown, but a 58 yard run by Paul Lowe, the third long run of the first qurter for the Chargers, made the score 21-7. George Blair and Gino Cappelleti exchanged field goals in the second quarter, before Don Norton scored on a 14 yard pass play to give the Chargers a 31-10 halftime lead. The Patriot attack got nowhere in the second half, as the San Diego line rushed quarterback Babe Parilli feroiously every time he dropped back to pass. The Chargers kept adding points against the Boston defense. Lance Alworth, the Chargers primary pass receiver, scored in the third quarter on a 48 yard pass from Rote. Keith Lincoln added his 2nd touchdown on a 25 yard pass from reserve quarterback John Hadl in the 4th quarter. Hadl then scored on a one yard plunge with less then 2 minutes remaining. George Blair's kick made the final score a lopsided 51-10. Although not even close, the game helped AFL by showcasing an exciting offensive team in the Chargers, a direct contrast with the defense oriented NFL champion Chicago Bears. |
