What was to be thought of the 1976 Patriots?  Were they the team that showed promise early in 1974 or the disenchanted squad that muddled it's way through the 1975 season.  The answer would be known early.

After opening with a 27-13 home loss to perennial division contender Baltimore, the Patriots had their plate full with AFC powers Miami, Pittsburgh and Oakland next on their schedule.  After falling behind early 7-6, the Patriots would score 17 straight points enroute to a 30-14 victory over Miami.  The next week on the road against the two time defending champion Pittsburgh, the Patriots rallied from a 20-9 third quarter defecit to win 30-27 and gain a tie for first place.  The Patriots closed their three game test by hosting Oakland.  The Patriots jumped out early to a 14-0 lead and led 21-10 at halftime before an offensive explosion saw them score the first 27 points of the second enroute to a 48-17 victory.

The three straight wins launched the Patriots to a franchise record 11 wins, their first playoff berth since 1963 and a rematch with Oakland in the playoffs.  Unlike the early game, this game was a dogfight from the outset.  The Patriots took a 21-10 lead into the 4th quarter before controversy struck.  After Oakland had closed the gap to 21-17, the Patriots started driving for a game securing score when tightend Russ Francis was mugged before the pass had arrived.  No flag was thrown and John Smith 's field goal attempt missed with 4:12 left.  Oakland took the ball and started marching down the field.  On a 3rd and 18 from the Patriots' 27, Ken Stabler attempted a pass that fell harmlessly to the ground, but Ray Hamilton was flagged from Roughing the Passer, a dubious and questionable call.  Ken Stabler would go over from the 1 yard line with 10 seconds left sending the Patriots to one of the bitterest defeats in team history.
