| The 1968 Patriots were a bad team all-around. While the roster had some talent in the likes of two-time AFL leading rusher Jim Nance and perennial All-star Nick Buoniconti, injuries forced them to sidelines for periods of time and the team played poorly in their abscence. The biggest change came when Babe Parilli was sent to New York in the preseason for Joe Namath's back-up Mike Taliaferro. A move made to make the Patriots younger backfired when Taliaferro struggled and eventually lost his job to undrafted rookie Tom Sherman. The team did start out quickly and was tied for first place by winning two of their first three games, but the wheels soon came off as Oakland dismantled the Patriots the next week 41-10. The Patriots woul dnever recover as injuries and poor play on offense saw them loses 9 of their last 11.. By the end of the season, a new change was made as Mike Holovak was replaced as coach. He left the Patriots as the winningest coach (53-47-9). A victroy total that would stand until the next century. |
