This past Monday, after the cowardice Pennbrook neglected to show up for their scheduled game, a group of PFL players traveled to Vardakas stadium at 10:00 pm to "hang out". Much to there dismay, however, their were unwelcomingly met with a clique of native Pennfield sophomores occupying their field.
Needless to say, a 10-7 game began that eventually came down to the wire. With the PFL being down three men, they chose to receiver first; and with the first play of the game, Alexander hit Meyers for a 50 yard TD pass off of a flea flicker. Capitalizing off an onside kick, Meyers lead the squad down for another score thanks to a few runs by Vardakas and TD pass to Stargell.
After a short quarterback controversy, the Sophomores found their Quarterback in the gun-slinging Jeff Schautz. Their first score came off of a swing pass to Randy Barndt, who, with help of the unfortunate playing conditions, shredded the entire defense for the score.
The remainder of the half's majority found various connections of Schautz to Bardnt. For the PFL, Alexander and Meyers switched quarterbacking every series, and indulged themselves in a myriad of trick plays including the Hook-and-ladder, the throw back pass, and the speed sweep. This was in addition to a good helping of the new thunder and lightning combination of Vardakas and Kozak. Some spectators were overheard saying that they may be the next Barber/Dayne connection.
After halftime, with the score 6-3 in favor of PFL, a difference in intensity was shown on behalf of the sophomores. After various scores by Schilling, Stargell, and Alexander, the PFL was on the verge of victory at 11-8 playing to 12. Schautz connected with Robby Eckerley for a score, and they ran a Hurry-up onside kick to recover the ball, their third in the game. Schautz then ran a swing pass to Barndt and let him do the rest for another score with the game now at 11-10.
The "Win by Two" rule was then instituted, as Alexander, who seemingly had Stargell wide open in the flat, threw and interception to Schautz who returned it all the way to the house, nodding the game at 11.
Meyers then lead the team on a 98-yard drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Alexander. Then, with the sophomores threatening to score again, Schautz hit Locke in what looked to be a harmless 5 yard pass. Nevertheless Vardakas stripped him of the ball and his virginity, sending the ball into the muddle grass. Alexander picked up the fumble, and after running for two yards, dished the ball to Stargell as he was being tackled who ran to the one yardline and gave the ball to Vardakas for him a much-earned score.
The PFL still looks to hold match-ups against the CFL and Penbrook in the coming weeks.
