Section 2 of Kryptos we are
told is to sound like an interrupted radio
transmission. This is my interpretatation of that section, and
what I
believe to explain the placement of the X's. The use of X's in
codes
is not uncommon to mark the end of statments. In this case, The
X's seem
to appear at the end of almost every statement unless it happens
to be a question, in which case the X is unneeded. Notice that
X's were only used
if longer sentences were spoken. It would seem unnecessary to use
so many
X's after shorter sentences such as "It was totally
invisible" and "They should" or "Only
WW."
So with that, using Alice and
Bob for our example, we can read section 2
as follows:
Alice:
"It was totally invisible. How's that possible?"
Bob:
"They used the earth's magnetic field X
The information was gathered and transmitted undergruund to an unknown location. X
Alice:
"Does Langley know about this?"
Bob:
"They should It's buried out there somewhere. X
Alice:
"Who knows the exact location?"
Bob:
"Only WW. This was his
last message X THIRTYEIGHTDEGREESFIFTYSE

This is just my
interpretation, nothing is set in stone. As for the
"errors" , it was very common during transmissions
for sections of ciphertext to be garbled or interpreted
incorrectly by the cipherclerk.
