Evil PEZ
![]() |
This is the skull head PEZ issued in the 1970's. Aside from the obvious fact that it is modeled after a human skull, there are other disturbing features. Notice the high black collar, it resembles the collar of a robe or cape that might be worn for some unholy ritual or at least for purposes of concealment. Why would a candy dispenser need to hide its identity? Notice also the furrowed brow that gives the impressionof a menacing glare. Lastly there is the missing tooth. Where is it? How was it lost? Are we to think that we're not eating candy but the tooth from a human skull?

Skull Head (large)
This is the skull head PEZ as sold today. Comparing the size of the skull to that of the earlier skull, it is easy to see that it is larger, approximately 20% in fact. Why the change? Perhaps it symbolizes the growth of the dark side of PEZ. Another change: the large skull has more teeth, 18 compared with 8 in the smaller skull PEZ. How could enlarging the skull and adding teeth possibly sell more candy? Maybe the intent is not to sell more candy, but to send a message. Think of it this way: 6 + 6 + 6 = 18! Of what significance is the number 18?

Which of the Turtles is this, teeth bared, eyes threatening, clad in black? Is it a lovable pizza-eating Turtle? Is it a wise-cracking, movie star Turtle? Is it a Turtale that Vanilla Ice lovingly rapped about? No, it's one more dark shadow in the usually bright world of PEZ.
