Int. Dawsons Room Night (Day 1)
Andie, Dawson, Jack, and Jen are watching Grease in Dawsons room. Its the part at the end where they are singing at the carnival.
Jen: Do you think this is what our senior year is going to be like?
Jack: God, I hope not.
Dawson: Yeah, I dont think we are going to be breaking out into spontaneous song and dance.
Jack: Or drag race.
Andie: Or be on American Bandstand.
Jen: (rolling her eyes) Cheesy musical numbers, and clichd plot points aside, we are embarking on our senior year of high school. Its supposed to be the greatest year of our lives.
Jack: (grabbing Jen by the shoulders) Wheres our cynical Jen, and what have you done to her.
Jen: (laughing, and pushing Jack away) Im just saying societal preconceptions have us trained to expect the greatest year of our lives, and being that I am rather pessimistic, Im wondering if our last year in the hollowed halls of Capeside will live up to the hype?
Dawson: Doubtful.
Jack: Highly doubtful.
Andie: I dont know. I can see it happening.
Everyone looks at her like she has three heads.
Dawson: What? You see us linking arms and singing, We are together at graduation.
Andie: (throwing a pillow at Dawson) No, I just mean Im feeling rather positive about this year. I see nothing but good things ahead for us all.
Jack: My sister, always looking on the bright side of things.
Jen: A regular Mary sunshine.
Andie: Guys just think about it for a second. Were seniors. One more year of high school, and were out, gone, done, away to college. No more Capeside.
Jen: She has a point.
Andie: Plus there are all the trappings of senior year like prom.
Jack: Been there, done that.
Dawson: Not looking forward to doing it again.
Jen: Definitely not the best memory.
Andie: Okay, well theres graduation, and homecoming, the class trip, college applications.
Jen: Andie, please stop while we still have a shred of hope for our senior year.
Jack: Yeah, this is getting rather depressing.
Andie: (glaring at them) School functions aside, this may just be the most memorable year of our lives.
Everyone takes a moment to contemplate the thought.
Fade to Credits...
Act 1
Ext. Aboard True Love (Day 2)
Pacey and Joey are sitting on deck enjoying the sun. Joey is leaning back against Paceys chest.
Joey: I think Im going to miss this the most.
Pacey: Whats that?
Joey: Sitting here like nothing else exists.
Pacey: Thanks for the compliment, Potter.
Joey: (slaps him lightly) I didnt mean you, you idiot. I meant life in general.
Pacey: (thoughtfully) I know what you mean.
They share a look silently conveying that they know exactly what they meant.
Joey: I just dont want this to end.
Pacey: Neither do I Jo.
Silence falls over them.
Joey: Pace?
Pacey: What Jo?
Joey: Are you scared?
Pacey: Of sailing back into Capeside, and facing everyone we hurt? (shaking his head he replies sarcastically) Nah, not at all.
Joey: Im being serious. Im scared.
Pacey: (kisses the top of her head) I am too, but its going to be all right. We have each other, and not to be overly sentimental here, but thats all we need.
Joey: (turns around to face him) I know, but Im not looking forward to having to face everyone.
Pacey: (pauses before saying) Not everyone, just Dawson.
Joey: Isnt that enough?
Pacey: It has to happen Jo. We cant stay out here forever.
Joey: (smiling) Cant we?
Pacey: Well lets see. Were basically broke, under the age of eighteen with no hope of gainful employment. Yeah, I think we can swing staying here forever.
Joey sighs and collapses back into his arms.
Pacey: Lets worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. Its our last day on True Love we should be enjoying it.
Joey: (looking up at him) Have I ever told you youre a genius.
Pacey: (grinning) I dont believe you have.
Joey: Well thats probably because youre not, seeing as how you got us lost seven times.
Pacey: Six.
Joey: It was seven.
Pacey: I refuse to count the time in Maryland, because we got lost on land.
Joey: We still got lost.
Pacey: We made it back.
Joey: It was seven times.
Pacey: (inching his face closer to hers) Six.
Joey: Seven.
Pacey: (in a whisper) It was only six.
Pacey kisses her ending anymore arguing. They pull apart.
Joey: (breathlessly) Seven.
Pacey: I just cant ever win with you can I Potter?
Joey: Some things arent worth fighting over, Pacey.
Pacey pauses.
Pacey: It was seven.
Joey grins in triumphant, and pulls Pacey into another kiss.
Int. Dawsons Room (Day 2)
Dawson is typing furiously at his computer in his room. The door opens and Andie walks in. Dawson looks up, and smiles.
Dawson: Hey Andie.
Andie: Hey, your door was open.
Dawson: You know youre welcome here anytime.
Andie: Thanks, whatcha doing?
Dawson: Working on my new script. Im hoping to start filming soon.
Andie: Thats great (pauses) you know that youre doing that again.
Dawson: It feels right. It feels great in fact. I didnt even really realize how much I missed being behind the camera until Jen had me film her for that tape for Henry, and as ridiculous as the situation was, it made me remember what I love about film.
Andie: Which is?
Dawson: Creating a fantasy.
Andie: So whats your film about?
Dawson: Loss of innocence.
Andie: Dawson, its not about...
Dawson cuts her off.
Dawson: No, I learned my lesson about capturing my life on film. Im not going to relive that catastrophe again.
Andie: So Dawson... (she stops)
Dawson: Yeah.
Andie: Ummm...
Dawson: Andie just spit it out.
Andie: You know Pacey and Joey are coming home tomorrow.
Dawson doesnt even flinch.
Andie: Dawson?
Dawson: What? I knew they had to come back eventually.
Andie: I know, but are you okay?
Dawson: Im fine. Its no big deal really. My ex best friend, and the girl Im in love with are coming home from their summer vacation where they spent every last waking, and sleeping moment together.
Andie: Dawson.
Dawson: (snapping at Andie) Can we not talk about this now. All I ever do is talk, talk, talk. Im sick of it.
Andie: Okay, Im sorry.
Dawson: (sighing) No, Im sorry Andie. I know youre just trying to help, but what I need right now is not to dwell on them. Ill have plenty of time to over analyze, and deconstruct how I feel when theyre right in front of my face being sickeningly happy with each other.
Andie: If you ever need someone to talk to.
Dawson: Thank you, Andie. If nothing else good came out of this situation, I at least discovered who really cares about me, but really Im fine. Im over it in fact. Ive moved on.
Andie gives him a doubtful look.
Int. Learys Fresh Fish Kitchen (Day 2)
Gale is talking to Bodie.
Gale: Thanks for again for coming down, Bodie. I thought that after this place had been running for a few months wed have ironed out all the kinks. But everyday there is a new crisis to deal with.
Bodie: Its part of the business.
Gale: At least its never boring around here.
Bodie: Youve done a wonderful job with this place, Gale.
Gale: Thank you. Im proud of everyone involved. They make my job easier. Thanks again for coming Bodie. I know youre busy with the B&B.
Bodie: Its no problem. I have an interest in this place too.
Gale laughs.
Gale: Hows the B&B doing?
Bodie: Good, weve been running at full capacity all summer, and were booked solid through the end of the season.
Gale: Thats great. It must be hard with Joey gone though.
Bodie pauses slightly uncomfortable talking about Joey to Gale.
Bodie: Its more work, but were managing.
Gale: When does she come home?
Bodie: Tomorrow.
Gale: I bet Bessie will be glad to have her home.
Bodie: Yeah. She worries about her little sister, and so do I, but then again I think Joey deserved this summer off. Shes had more responsibility than anyone her age should have.
Gale: Joey is a strong, intelligent young woman. Mitch and I have always been proud of her.
Mitch walks up, and puts his arms around his wife.
Mitch: Proud of who?
Gale: Joey.
Mitch: Yes, we have. How is she, Bodie?
Bodie: Good. She comes home tomorrow.
Mitch pauses.
Mitch: And Pacey?
Bodie: Hes good too.
Silence falls over them.
Bodie: Well, I have to get back to the B&B. I reseasoned the sauce, so it should be fine now, but if there are anymore problems dont hesitate to call.
Mitch: Thanks Bodie.
Mitch extends his hand, and they shake.
Bodie: No problem.
Bodie leaves, and Gale turns to Mitch.
Mitch: So Joey, and Pacey come home tomorrow.
Gale: Im worried about Dawson, Mitch.
Mitch: Does he know?
Gale: I dont think so.
Mitch: Maybe we should warn him.
Gale: Thats not what Im worried about. He hasnt talked about Joey in weeks. He just keeps insisting hes fine.
Mitch: Maybe he is.
Gale: (giving him a look) You dont lose the girl you love to your best friend, and just get over it. Im worried about how hes going to feel when they come back, and he has to see them together.
Mitch: Ill talk to him tonight.
Gale: Thank you.
Gale gives Mitch a quick kiss.
Ext. Jens porch (Day 2)
Jen is sitting in Henrys lap, and they are kissing pretty heatedly. They pull apart.
Henry: I missed you so much.
Jen: I missed you too.
Jen gives him a quick kiss.
Jen: Im thinking next year there will be no football camp.
Henry: (grinning) So you think well still be together next summer.
Jen: Trying to get rid of me, Parker.
Henry: Never.
They kiss again. As they continue to kiss, the porch door opens, and Grams comes out.
Grams: Jennifer.
Jen, and Henry jump away from each other.
Jen: Grams.
Henry: (wiping his mouth) Mrs. Ryan.
Grams: Hello Henry. How was football camp?
Henry: Good. The whole time I wished I were here.
Grams smiles, and Henry stands up.
Henry: I have to go help my dad with this thing hes been wanting me to help him with.
Henry backs away from the porch.
Henry: It was nice seeing you again Mrs. Ryan.
Grams: You too Henry.
Henry retreats off the porch and is gone.
Jen: Grams please dont start. We were just kissing.
Grams: Jennifer, I did not come out here to chase poor Henry away, or to lecture you. I was just going to ask if youd like some lemonade.
Jen: (smiling) Really?
Grams: Yes really. Jennifer, I thought we had reached an understanding.
Jen: I guess old feelings of guilt, and damnation die hard.
Grams: (giving her the Grams look) I will just say be careful with Henry. He really loves you.
Jen: I will Grams, and I love him too.
Grams: Come inside, and have some lemonade with me. And next time you see Henry, tell him not to run off so fast.
Jen: I will.
Grams holds the door open, and Jen walks inside.
Ext. Sidewalk Caf (Day 2)
Jack is sitting at a table with Charles. Charles is nineteen, tall, with dirty blonde hair, and blue eyes.
Jack: So Grams like whips the car around taking out a few trashcans and the curb in the process.
Charles: (laughing) Youre kidding?
Jack: I kid you not. She takes off down the highway, and drives all night till we get to the rest area the bus had stopped at. So Jen runs out screaming Henrys name at the top of her lungs, and when she finds him she just goes off about how much she loves him with all these football camp kids watching, and listening to every word.
Charles: She sounds like quite the firecracker.
Jack: She is. Shes amazing. Shes a great friend, and Grams too. I am so lucky to have them in my life.To have people who just accept me and love me. Theyre like my family.
Charles: Id love to meet them.
Jack: Yeah. Jen really wants to meet you too.
Charles: (pointedly) Well, then why havent we met yet, Jack?
Jack: Things are a little crazy right now. Her boyfriend just came back from football camp. Shes been MIA for the past week.
Charles: And your sister, and other friends?
Jack: Charles, I know what youre thinking, and its not like that. I want them to meet you, and Im going to introduce you. Its just a bad time right now.
Charles: Whys that?
Jack: Its been a tough summer for them, and things are just going to be getting tougher, but I promise you, you will meet them.
Charles: Okay Jack. I believe you.
Charles reaches across the table and grasps Jack hand.
Jack: This weekend, why dont we go out with Jen and Henry?
Charles: Sounds great.
Jack: Ill ask her tonight.
Charles: Thanks Jack.
Int. Potter B&B Kitchen (Day 2)
Bessie is standing at the sink scrubbing a baking dish. You can tell shes worn out. The phone rings, and she throws down the dish, and reaches for the phone.
Bessie: Potter B&B.
Alexander walks into the kitchen completely dirty, and wet. Hes leaving large puddles of muddy water as he walks. Bessie covers the mouthpiece of the phone.
Bessie: (in a harsh whisper) Alexander, get your butt outside.
Bessie removes her hand from the mouthpiece.
Bessie: (in fake cheerfulness) Let me check for you.
Bessie grabs Alexander by the arm, and he begins to scream. At that moment Bodie walks in. He sees Bessie struggling to control her temper, and grabs Alexander.
Bodie: Lets go outside buddy.
Bodie smiles at Bessie, and gives her a quick kiss on the cheek. Bessie sighs and walks to the reception table. She flips through the book.
Bessie: We have one room open that weekend.
Bessie waits while the other person is obviously talking.
Bessie: It is the smallest room we have, but it has a beautiful view of the creek.
Bessie waits again. She begins writing in the book.
Bessie: Okay. Thank you, and we will see you then.
Bessie hangs up the phone, and sighs. She slowly walks back into the kitchen. She grabs a mop, and starts mopping up the puddles Alexander left. Bodie comes back inside, and grabs the mop from her.
Bodie: Let me do it.
Bessie: Im going to kill that girl when she gets back.
Bodie: No youre not.
Bessie: Youre right. Im not. Im going to make her work, since all Ive been doing since she left is working.
Bodie: Bess.
Bessie: I know. Its just so frustrating sometimes. We really could have used her help this summer.
Bodie: We could have, but we managed.
Bessie: Im just glad shes coming back, and hopefully in one piece.
Bodie: Pacey wouldnt let anything happen to her.
Bessie: Paceys what Im worried about.
Bodie: Bess relax.
Bessie: There is the very realistic possibility that she and Pacey are having sex, and I for one am worried about it.
Bodie: If they are theres nothing you can do about it. Shes a smart girl. You just have to trust her.
Bessie: Shes so young though.
Bodie: These days seventeen is rather old in that respect.
Bessie: Youre not making me feel any better.
Bodie finishes the floor, and sets the mop against the wall. He puts his arm around Bessie.
Bodie: Shes coming home tomorrow. Everything will be okay.
Fade out...
ACT 2
Int. Aboard True Love (Day 2)
Pacey has his hands over Joeys eyes as the stand in the cabin True Love.
Joey: Pacey, would you please remove your hands from my eyes now.
Pacey: One second.
Pacey maneuvers Joey a little to the right, and drops his hands. Joey blinks a few times to adjust her eyes, and then stares straight ahead at the dress hanging from a hook by the bed.
Joey: (smiling) Pacey what is this?
Pacey: A dress.
Joey: Whats it for?
Pacey: (rolling his eyes) For you to wear, Potter.
Joey turns to look at Pacey.
Joey: Wear where?
Pacey: To dinner. Reservations are in an hour, so you better hurry.
Joey: Pacey you cant afford this.
Pacey rests his hands on her shoulders.
Pacey: Let me worry about that. You just get dressed.
Joey takes his face in her hands.
Joey: Have I told you how amazing you are?
Pacey: Once or twice, but you can tell me again.
Joey: Youre amazing.
Joey brushes her lips against Paceys. Pacey pulls her tighter to him as the kiss deepens. Pacey pulls away.
Pacey: Get dressed.
Joey: Yes sir.
Pacey turns and starts walking up the stairs to the deck. He turns around to look at Joey. She is smiling as she runs her hand over the material of the dress. Pacey smiles before disappearing up to the deck.
Int. Dawsons Room (Day 2)
Dawson is sitting on his bed watching his TV. He pushes stop, and rewinds the tape. He pushes play, and we see that he is watching Sea Creatures from the Deep. Its a scene with Pacey and Joey and Dawson watches it closely. Theres a knock on his door, and Mitch enters. Dawson hits stop.
Mitch: Hey Dawson, can we talk.
Dawson: Umm sure, whats up?
Mitch: Today at the restaurant, Bodie mentioned that Joey and Pacey are coming home tomorrow.
Dawson: Yeah I know.
Mitch: You know?
Dawson: Andie told me earlier today.
Mitch: How are you doing?
Dawson: God, I wish people would stop asking me that. Im fine.
Mitch: Youre fine?
Dawson: Yes, Im fine.
Mitch: Then why were you watching them?
Mitchs eyes drift towards the now vacant TV.
Dawson: Its research.
Mitch: Research?
Dawson: Im starting a new movie soon, so I thought Id take a look at my old work to see what I can improve on.
Mitch: Dawson, I know you dont want to hear this, but its okay to be upset. Its okay to be angry, and hurt.
Dawson: Dad...
Mitch: Locking it up inside is only going to hurt more in the end.
Dawson: I know.
Mitch: If you need to talk Im here.
Dawson: Thanks.
Mitch gives Dawson one more look before leaving. Dawson pushes play, and a tear slides down his face as he watches Pacey and Joey argue on screen the chemistry obvious to him now.
Int. Aboard True Love (Day 2)
Joey is standing in front of a little mirror trying to see how she looks. She sighs, as she desperately tries to fix her hair in the cramped quarters.
Pacey: (OS) Jo, are you about ready. I still have to change you know.
Joey: Just a second.
Joey gives her hair one last run through before turning away.
Joey: Im done.
Pacey descends the stairs, and stops when he sees Joey.
Pacey: God, Joey you are beautiful.
Joey: (giving him her little half smile) Thanks, though these meager quarters make it hard for a girl to look her best.
Pacey: You insulting my girl?
Joey: (rolling her eyes) Its just a boat Pacey.
Pacey closes the distance between them.
Pacey: I meant you.
Joeys breath catches in her throat as Paceys eyes penetrate hers.
Pacey: You are absolutely breathtaking.
Pacey lowers his mouth to hers, and they share a deep kiss. Pacey pulls away.
Pacey: Ill be up in a minute.
Joey kisses him again.
Joey: Okay.
Joey looks into his eyes before finally making her way up on deck. Pacey smiles as she leaves. He opens a box by the bed, and pulls out a suit. He lays it on the bed. He reaches into the pocket and pulls out some money. He counts the bills, two hundred dollars. He shoves them back in his pocket. He looks at his watch, and seeing the time he hurriedly yanks his shirt over his head.
Int. Learys Fresh Fish (Night of Day 2)
Jen is sitting at the bar with Jack. Shes on her break from work.
Jen: So when do I get to meet this mysterious man youve been spending all your time with?
Jack: Soon. He really wants to meet you too.
Jen: Really? What have you been saying about me?
Jack: All good things I promise.
Jen: He sounds great Jack. Im so happy for you.
Jack: Im happy for me too.
Jen: You deserve it, especially after the Ethan fiasco.
Jack: Id rather not talk about that.
Jen: Point taken.
Jack: So I was thinking, this weekend, we could all go out.
Jen: All?
Jack: Me, you, Charles, and Henry if you want.
Jen: A double date with three guys? How does a girl get so lucky?
Jack: A couple of em are gay.
Jen: (rolling her eyes) Ill talk to Henry.
Jack: Cool.
Jen: Did you hear about Pacey and Joey?
Jack: Sailing back into Capeside manana. Andie told me.
Jen: How is she taking it?
Jack: She seems fine, but shes perfected the art of appearing perfectly fine when shes not.
Jen: Yeah, Im worried about Dawson too.
Jack: Its going to be hard for him.
Jen: Maybe we should hold off on our date. Im just thinking Dawson may need us the next couple of days. Andie too.
Henry comes up behind Jen.
Henry: What date?
Jen turns around.
Jen: Henry what are you doing here?
Henry: Cant a guy visit his girlfriend?
Jen: Yeah.
Henry kisses her, but Jen pulls away.
Henry: What?
Jen: Im at work.
Henry: So? Youre on break right?
Jen: Yeah, but Im still at work.
Henry: (hurt) Sorry.
Silence.
Henry: So what date?
Jen: Jack was talking about us gong out with him and Charles.
Henry: Charles?
Jen: Yeah, Jacks friend.
Henry: I guess I missed a lot this summer.
Jen: Were all still trying to catch up.
Henry: So, when do you get off?
Jen: An hour.
Henry: Why dont I wait, and then we can hangout.
Jen: Sorry Parker, I have plans with Jack tonight.
Henry: Plans?
Jen: Yeah, plans. You know those things you make in advance.
Henry: Right, so showing up, and trying to surprise you is pointless. I have to make an appointment now?
Jen: Henry quit overreacting.
Henry: Im not overreacting. I just got home from a whole summer away from you. Excuse me for wanting to spend time with you.
Jen stands up, and takes Henrys hand.
Jen: Henry, I want to spend time with you too, but I cant just ditch my friends. Especially not now.
Henry: What does that mean?
Jen: Pacey and Joey come home tomorrow.
Henry: And theyre more important than me?
Jen: Henry this is pointless. Youre not competing with my friends.
Henry: It feels like it sometimes.
Jen: This is ridiculous. When you grow up, and quit thinking only of yourself, call me. Jack Ill meet you in an hour.
Jen walks away. Henry sighs, and falls onto Jens vacant stool. He runs his hand through his hair in frustration.
Henry: I really screwed that up, didnt I?
Jack: In one word definitely.
Henry: Im always screwing up, saying the wrong things.
Jack: Henry Im going to give you some unsolicited advice. Chill out. Jen loves you.
Henry nods.
Jack: And one more thing. You should probably apologize.
Henry: Thanks Jack.
Jack stands up.
Jack: No problem Henry. Hang in there.
Int. Dawsons Kitchen (Night of Day 2)
Mitch is standing by the counter pouring him self a cup of coffee. Gale walks in the room. She heads straight to Mitch and gives him a hug and kiss. He holds her.
Mitch: How is my favorite wife?
Gale: I better be the only wife.
Mitch: How was your day?
Gale pulls away from Mitch and pours her self a cup of coffee.
Gale: Exhausting. Besides the kitchen fiasco earlier this morning, Sarah called in sick, and the dishwasher broke, so we had to do it the old fashioned way.
Mitch: Why didnt you call me?
Gale: I was hoping you were talking to Dawson.
Mitch: I tried. He doesnt want to talk about it.
Gale: Mitch, Im worried. Maybe I should try talking to him.
Mitch: I think we should just let him be for now. He has plenty of support, and people to turn to. Hell talk about it when hes ready. Forcing him to isnt going to help him.
Gale: Youre probably right. Im just worried what its going to do to him to see them together.
Mitch kisses her.
Mitch: Theyre his best friends. Im sure theyll work it out.
Gale: I hope youre right. Hell be lost without them.
Int. Dawsons bedroom (Night of Day 2)
Dawson is typing at his computer. Andie crawls through the window. When her feet hit the floor, Dawson jumps startled. He turns around, and Andie smiles at him.
Dawson: Andie.
Andie: Hey Dawson, I hope you dont mind I used the ladder.
Dawson: No, my windows always open for you.
Andie: I noticed you put the ladder back up.
Dawson turns away.
Andie: Are you expecting her to crawl through your window again?
Dawson: Andie, please I dont want to talk about this.
Andie: Dawson, you have to talk about it. If you lock it all up inside itll just eat away at you, and itll make you crazy. I mean literally crazy. I should know.
Dawson: Nothings eating at me. Im fine and I wish people would just stop asking me if Im okay. I feel like everyone is watching me just waiting for me to self implode.
Andie: Were just worried.
Dawson: (yelling) Well stop because Im not going to break down and cry, and Im not going to get mad and start breaking things. Im not going to go and beat him up, and Im not going to try and get Joey back. Ive moved on. Im fine.
Andie starts crying. Dawson is instantly sorry he started yelling. He puts his arm around her rather awkwardly.
Dawson: Im sorry Andie. I shouldnt have yelled at you. Im just so frustrated with how everyone is babying me. Im fine.
Andie: Maybe Im not.
Dawson: What?
Andie: Maybe Im not fine, Dawson. Maybe I want you to talk about it, because I need to talk about it. In this self involved little world you live in you fail to realize that Pacey and Joey affect other people other than just you.
Dawson: Andie I didnt know.
Andie: You never asked.
Dawson pulls her into a tight hug.
Fade out...
ACT 3
Ext. Restaurant Patio (Night of Day 2)
Pacey and Joey are sitting across from each other at a small table on the patio of an extremely nice restaurant. A candle burns at their table, and soft music plays. They are reading their menus.
Joey: Pacey this food costs a fortune.
Pacey: Let me worry about that. Order whatever you want.
Joey: Pacey, I cant...
Pacey: Jo, dont worry about it.
Joey: Pacey why are you like this?
Pacey: Like what?
Joey: So unbelievably good to me?
Pacey: What? Thats a problem.
Joey: No, its just being with you is nothing like I expected it to be.
Pacey: What did you expect?
Joey: I dont know, but I thought I knew Pacey Witter, and every day Im finding out I didnt know him at all.
Pacey: You knew me Jo, better than anyone.
Joey: But I didnt know everything.
Pacey: You cant possibly know everything about a person. You can only know what they let you see.
Joey: Well, I like what I see now.
Pacey: Well, thank you Potter.
Joey smiles and the waiter approaches.
Waiter: Are you ready to order, sir?
Pacey: Jo?
Joey: Yeah, Ill have the lobster.
Pacey raises his eyebrow. Joey just smiles at him.
Pacey: The lady will have the lobster, and so will I.
Waiter: Excellent choice. Can I get you anything else?
Pacey looks at Joey and she shakes her head no.
Pacey: Were fine. Thank you.
Waiter: Very well.
The waiter takes their menus and leaves. Pacey takes Joeys hand across the table, and gently caresses it with his thumb.
Ext. Jack and Jens Spot (Night of Day 2)
Jack and Jen are lying in the grass staring up at the sky.
Jen: You know what I liked best about this summer?
Jack: Whats that?
Jen: You and me. (Jen turns her head to look at Jack) With all the crazy things that happened last year, I felt that we drifted apart, but this summer I feel like we are closer than we were even when we lived together.
Jack: Yeah. (Jack turns to look at Jen) Sometimes I miss living with you and Grams.
Jen: Youre always welcome you know.
Jack: (looking back up at the sky) I know, and believe me that means more to me than you could ever know.
Jen: Things with your dad still going okay?
Jack: Yeah. Its still a little weird, but the guy is trying his hardest.
Jen: Does he know about Charles?
Jack: Nope.
Jen: Are you going to tell him?
Jack: (turning to look at Jen again) Yeah, but its still so new. I dont want to complicate things before I have to.
Jen: I can understand that. (Looking back up at the sky) The honeymoon period is the best. Enjoy it because it gets complicated after that.
Jack: Things with Henry arent going well?
Jen: I thought they were, but you saw how he acted tonight, or overreacted I should say.
Jack: He was a bit on the irrational side.
Jen sits up, and looks down at Jack.
Jen: Hes always felt that there was this weird competition between him and my friends.
Jack: You do tend to segregate the two.
Jen: What do you mean?
Jack sits up.
Jack: You have a tendency to separate Henry time from friends time. None of us really know Henry that well. I think the only time weve all been in the same place was prom, and thats not saying much considering we were all miserable.
Jen: When Im with my friends I want to be friend Jen, and when Im with Henry I want to be girlfriend Jen.
Jack: Cant you be both?
Jen: No they are two separate people, two separate lives.
Jack: Maybe thats the problem.
Jen: What?
Jack: Henry wants to be a part of your life, and he cant when you hide such a big part from him.
Jen: Maybe Im scared to lose myself completely in him. If hes in every aspect of my life, I have nothing that is just mine.
Jack: It doesnt have to mean losing yourself. Your friends are important to you Jen, and something that important shapes who you are. Henry just wants to be a part of that.
Jen: So you think Im wrong?
Jack: No, but I think you both need to give a little. I told him he needs to back off a little, and Im going to tell you, you need to let him in more.
Jen slaps Jack lightly on the arm.
Jack: What was that for?
Jen: For always being right. I swear, sometimes I just want to laugh at us.
Jack: Why?
Jen: Because occasionally, we fall into the overly portrayed straight girl/gay guy friendship roles.
Jack: (laughing) God help us.
Jen stands up.
Jack: Where are you going?
Jen: To apologize to Henry, and ask him if hed like to go out with you and me this weekend.
Jack: (smiles) See ya Jen.
Jack lies back in the grass as Jen walks away.
Int. Dawsons Room (The Night of Day 2)
Dawson is hugging Andie.
Dawson: Im sorry.
Andie pulls away, and wipes her eyes. Dawson reaches over, and grabs some Kleenex and hands it to her. She wipes her eyes, and nose.
Andie: Im sorry Dawson.
Dawson: For what?
Andie: Breaking down like a crazy person.
Dawson: Youre not crazy.
Andie: I know Im supposed to be over Pacey, and I am. I really am. Its just that he was my first love, and I dont know if I can stand to see him happy with someone else, especially when Im not.
Andie sits on Dawsons bed, and Dawson sits next to her. He puts his arm around her.
Dawson: I understand.
Andie: (smiling) I know. It just hurts to see how easily Pacey has moved on. Sometimes I doubt that he ever really loved me. I know its foolish, because I know he did, and I was the one who screwed it up, but it still hurts.
Dawson: You know what hurts the most?
Andie looks at Dawson with surprise, relief, and concern.
Andie: What?
Dawson: I pushed Joey right into his arms. Every day Im haunted with these what if scenarios. What if I hadnt turned Joey down last year? What if I hadnt asked him to watch over her? What if I had tried to get her back sooner? What if it was anyone but him?
Andie: I do that too. There hasnt been a day that has passed that I havent thought what if I had only not slept with another guy.
Dawson: When does it stop?
Andie: I dont know.
Silence falls over them.
Andie: Whyd you put the ladder back up Dawson?
Dawson: I dont know.
Andie: Yes you do.
Dawson: I cant hate her as much as I try.
Andie: Do you want to hate her?
Dawson: It would make it easier to let go, to move on, if I just hated her instead of still loving her.
Andie: So the ladder is your way of saying you want to be friends still.
Dawson: Shell never find her way back to me if Ive locked all the ways in. Stupid I know, but I guess Im just hoping shes going to crawl through that window and tell me I was right. It was a mistake, and we were meant to be together.
Andie: Dawson...
Dawson: I know its not going to happen.
Andie: Probably not.
Dawson: A part of me wishes they would just stay away. Its bad enough I have to live with the fact that she doesnt want me, and wants him, but now Im going to have to live with seeing them all over each other.
Andie: Itll be hard, Dawson.
Dawson: Hard doesnt seem to be a strong enough word. Try agonizing, torture, unbearable, cruel, impossible, and heart wrenching.
Andie: But it will get easier.
Dawson: A year later and you're still not over him, and youre saying itll get easier.
Andie: You cant even say his name, can you?
Dawson: Why would I want to?
Andie: Cause hes your best friend.
Dawson: Was my best friend.
Andie: Dawson, you cant go on hating him forever.
Dawson: Why not?
Andie: What good is it going to do?
Dawson is silent.
Dawson: I didnt just lose the girl I loved. I lost my best friend.
Andie: It doesnt have to be that way.
Dawson: I asked him to look out for her. To be the friend I couldnt be, and he took advantage of us both. How can I forgive him for that? Maybe its unfair, or irrational, but the thought of them makes me sick. I could learn to accept Joey with anyone, but not him, and I can forgive her, but not him.
Andie: Hating him is only going to hurt you more.
Dawson: Maybe, but its how I feel.
Andie: I hated him when he first broke up with me. God, Pacey has a way of making you so mad at him, but everything he does comes from the heart. He doesnt know how not to follow his heart.
Dawson: I dont need a Pacey pep talk. Its not going to change my mind.
Andie: The point wasnt to give you warm fuzzies about Pacey. The point was that eventually I stopped hating him. You will too.
Dawson begins to argue, but Andie cuts him off.
Andie: You will in time.
Dawson: Andie, I dont know how you do it.
Andie: Years of therapy.
They laugh.
Dawson: Are you okay?
Andie: Im okay. Im not looking forward to seeing them together, but I know that I have friends to turn to for support.
Andie looks at Dawson pointedly. Dawson reaches out and grasps her hand.
Andie: And so do you.
Dawson smiles.
Dawson: Wanna watch a movie? Ill even let you pick.
Andie: Id love too.
Ext. Restaurant Patio (The Night of Day 2)
Pacey: Hows your food?
Joey: Amazing. I dont know how to thank you for this Pacey. Its the perfect end to a perfect summer.
Pacey winks at her.
Pacey: Im sure you can think of something.
Joey lowers her head.
Pacey: You dont have to thank me, Jo.
Joey: (looking back up) I know, but I want to. This summer has been amazing, and I owe it all to you.
Pacey: How soon she forgets.
Joey: What?
Pacey: Well, I remember numerous occasions when you threatened to throw me overboard. A few times you resorted to kicking me, and once you threatened to hop a bus home. Throw in all the times you complained about the cramped quarters, the inadequate bathroom facilities, your lack of choice in clothing, the food selection, my rather crude sense of humor, not to mention my personal hygiene, and I was thinking this summer has been less than a dream cruise for you.
Joey: Well, I remember all the nights staring at the stars. All the days of lying in the sun, and swimming in the ocean. I remember, the walks along the beach, the talks that lasted into the middle of the night, the boardwalk in South Carolina.
Pacey: Oh yes the boardwalk.
Joey smiles.
Joey: Bickering, threats, and inadequate facilities aside, this trip has been the greatest time of my life.
Pacey: For me too, Jo.
Joey: So if I havent said it before, thank you.
Pacey: Your welcome, Potter.
The waiter walks up to their table.
Waiter: Would you care for dessert?
Pacey: What do you say, Jo?
Joey: (shaking her head) I couldnt eat anything else.
Pacey: You sure?
Joey nods.
Pacey: No, but thank you.
Waiter: Very well, heres your bill, sir. Ill pick that up when youre ready.
The waiter leaves, and Joey reaches for the bill, but Pacey snatches it from her.
Pacey: What do you think you are doing Potter?
Joey: Pacey, let me help pay.
Pacey: For the last time, no.
Joey: Male chauvinist pig.
Pacey: You really know how to sweet talk a guy, dont you Jo?
Joey: How does that explain you?
Pacey: Come again?
Joey: Obviously my charms worked on you.
Pacey: That they did. My poor dysfunctional, self deprecating self enjoys being the whipping boy for that sharp tongue of yours.
Joey raises her eyebrow.
Joey: Really?
Pacey: Oh yeah. Im a great admirer of your tongue, and all it can do.
Joey: (shocked and embarrassed) Pacey.
Pacey: What?
Joey: Stop.
Pacey: I love it when you get all flustered and embarrassed.
Joey: (glaring at him) I loathe you.
Pacey: Thats not what you said last night when we were...
Joey cuts him off.
Joey: (raising her voice) Pacey.
Pacey laughs, and places the money on the table.
Pacey: (laughs) Ready to go, Jo?
Joey: I think we should before you find yourself swimming home.
Pacey laughs again before standing up, and pulling out Joeys chair. As she stands up Pacey whispers in her ear.
Pacey: Dont be too hasty Jo the nights plans arent over yet.
Joey trembles slightly at his words.
Fade out...
Act 4
Int. Dawsons Room (Night of Day 2)
Dawson and Andie are lying against the headboard of Dawsons bed watching a movie. Dawson hits stop as the movie is ending. They sit there in silence. Finally Andie gets up.
Andie: I should be getting home.
Dawson: Okay.
Andie shifts nervously.
Andie: Right, bye Dawson.
Andie starts to walk out of his room.
Dawson: Andie.
Andie: Yeah?
Dawson: Thank you. Thank you for being a good friend.
Andie: (smiling) Youre welcome.
Dawson: We should do this again sometime. I mean we spent a lot of time together this summer, but it was never just the two of us.
Andie: Id like that. Bye Dawson.
Dawson: Bye.
Andie walks out of his room, and Dawson falls back onto his bed. He stares at the ceiling thinking of what has been on his mind all summer, but he kept locked up until tonight.
Ext. Aboard True Love (Night of Day 2)
Pacey climbs aboard True Love, and holds his hand out to help Joey up.
Joey: So whats the big surprise?
Pacey: Youll see.
Joey: Pacey.
Pacey: Jo would you shut up for two seconds, please.
Joey pauses for two seconds.
Joey: So wheres the surprise?
Before Pacey can answer her, soft violin music begins to play. Joey turns her head, and sees the violin player by the side of the boat. Pacey extends his hand to her.
Pacey: May I have this dance?
Joey stares at him in surprised shock before smiling and placing her hand in his. Pacey pulls her tightly against him, and they begin to sway to the music.
Joey: Pacey what bank did you rob?
Pacey: Really Potter, do you think I like you that much?
Joey: I dont know, but this had to cost a fortune.
Pacey: It wasnt that much.
Joey: Really Pacey, where did you get the money?
Pacey: Well since you wont let it go, I borrowed it from Doug.
Joey: Doug?
Pacey: Remember two days ago when I went into town, and you threw a fit because I said you couldnt go?
Joey nods.
Pacey: Well I had him wire me the money.
Joey: And you bought the dress.
Pacey: And I bought the dress, as well as this little number I have on.
Joey: How are you going to pay him back?
Pacey: Shockingly enough he doesnt want it back.
Joey: He doesnt?
Pacey: Well not exactly. It seems that he is in desperate need of assistance in his redecorating, and in lieu of settling my debt with cash Im paying up in labor.
Joey: Youre going to help him redecorate?
Pacey: Yup which probably entails countless activities that may bring my sexuality into question.
Joey: Ill make sure your sexuality remains intact.
Pacey: Youd do that for me Potter?
Joey: Its the least I can do after everything youve done for me tonight.
Pacey: I did it as much for me as for you.
Joey: For us.
Pacey: For us.
Joey rests her head on Paceys shoulder as they fall into silence.
Ext. Henrys House (Night of Day 2)
Jen is standing outside of Henrys window. She picks up a little rock from the ground, and throws it at his window. It hits the glass.
Jen: (in a hushed shout) Parker.
Jen picks up another rock, and throws it at the window. It bangs noisily against the glass.
Jen: (a little louder) Henry.
The window opens and a sleepy Henry leans out.
Henry: (in a hushed voice) What are you doing out there?
Jen: I need to talk to you.
Henry: Now?
Jen: Yes now.
Henry: Why?
Jen: Im sorry.
Henry: Youre sorry?
Jen: Im sorry for shutting you out of my life.
Henry smiles.
Henry: Hold on.
Henry ducks inside, and Jen waits impatiently for him to return. Henry climbs out of his window, and slides down to the edge of the roof. He jumps down. Jen laughs.
Jen: Youre crazy.
Henry: Me? Im not the one throwing stones at a window in the middle of the night.
Jen: Im sorry Henry. I really am. Im just scared.
Henry: So am I.
Jen: But not in the same way. I see the world through jaded eyes, but you, you see the world through these amazingly innocent and pure eyes. Youre not scared to love.
Henry: No Im not, but Im scared to lose love.
Jen: Youre not going to lose me Parker. Youre stuck with me.
Henry: (smiling) Promise.
Jen: (nods, and whispers) Promise.
They kiss.
Henry: Im sorry too.
Jen: For?
Henry: Not giving you space, and for not wanting to share you with your friends.
Jen: You dont have to be jealous of Jack, or any of my friends.
Henry: I know that in my head, but my heart (he places his hand over his heart) cant stand to be away from you.
Henrys dad opens the front door.
Henrys Dad: Henry what are you doing?
Henry looks over at his dad, and then back at Jen.
Henry: I guess I should go and try to explain this to my Dad.
Jen: I love you Parker.
Henry: I love you too.
Henry gives Jen a quick kiss before heading towards his house.
Ext. Aboard True Love (Night of Day 2)
Pacey and Joey are dancing slowly to the music, barely moving. Pacey runs his hands up her arms, and Joey shivers.
Pacey: Youre cold.
Joey shakes her head no, but Pacey takes off his jacket, and puts it around her shoulders anyway.
Pacey: Lets go inside.
Joey looks up at him, and smiles.
Joey: Okay.
Pacey: Ill be down in a minute.
Joey walks down the steps to the cabin of True Love, and Pacey hops off the boat. He walks to the violinist.
Pacey: Thanks man.
Pacey pulls out some money and hands it to him.
Violinist: Shes a pretty girl.
Pacey: That she is.
Violinist: (he looks at the money in his hand, and visually counts it) She must be very special.
Pacey: You have no idea.
Violinist: Thank you. Enjoy the rest of your night.
Pacey: I will, take it easy.
Pacey turns, and heads back onto his boat. He climbs down the stairs to the cabin, and stops dead in his tracks. Candles light the small space, and Joey is standing in front of him with a shy smile on her face.
Ext. Dock outside of Dawsons House (Night of Day 2)
Dawson is sitting out on the edge of the dock. Hes staring across the creek, towards Joeys house. He hears footsteps and looks up to see Jen sitting next to him.
Jen: Whatcha doing?
Dawson: Sitting.
Jen follows Dawsons gaze across the creek.
Jen: Interesting view.
Dawson laughs.
Dawson: You can say it. Im looking towards Joeys house, and yes wondering if shes ever going to row across this creek to me again. Knowing that its unlikely is killing me, and dont worry Im not going to jump in the creek.
Jen: Did we have an enlightened self awakening tonight?
Dawson: Something like that.
Jen: Its good to talk about it.
Dawson: Ever notice how much we talk and talk and talk, and we talk like we know whats going on, but honestly Jen, we dont. We have to talk so much because we havent got a clue.
Jen: Youre right. We dont always know what were talking about, but sometimes we do. Whomever you talked to tonight obviously knew what to say.
Dawson: Andie. I talked to Andie.
Jen: Some things are universal, and heartbreak is one of them.
Dawson: I never realized how much Pacey and Joey affects her until tonight. I felt like such a jerk for never noticing, for being so wrapped up in my own self denial, and pity.
Jen: Pacey and Joeys little summer adventure affects us all, Dawson.
Dawson: How does it affect you?
Jen: Im the proverbial middleman, or woman in my case. And the thing I fear the most, is that well all never be friends again.
Dawson: The forecast doesnt look too good right now.
Jen: I dont know Dawson. Its a new year. Things are changing. Were moving forward, and most importantly were growing up. Anything can happen.
Dawson: When did everyone else become such the optimists?
Jen: (laughing) Youve had quite an influence on us Dawson Leary.
Dawson smiles.
Int. Aboard True Love (The Night of Day 2)
Pacey stares at Joey.
Pacey: Jo?
Joey extends her hand. Pacey grasps it before closing the space between them. Joey wraps her free hand behind Paceys neck, and kisses him. Pacey pulls her tightly against him. While they are kissing Joey slips a condom into Paceys hand. Pacey pulls away immediately.
Pacey: (looking at the condom) Whats this?
Joey: (nervously) What does it look like?
Pacey: Whered you get this?
Joey: Well, why you were out making plans for tonight, so was I.
Pacey: Wow, I dont know what to say.
Joey: Dont say anything.
Joey kisses him again. Joey reaches her hands up and starts to unbutton Paceys shirt. Pacey pulls away from the kiss, and stills her hands.
Pacey: Jo, we shouldnt.
Joey: Why?
Pacey: I dont want us, this trip, to be about this, to be about sex.
Joey: Its not, Pacey. It never was. We waited. We were waiting for me to be ready. Well, Im ready.
Pacey: I have no doubt you are, but...
Joey: But what?
Pacey pauses.
Pacey: Maybe Im not.
Joey: (shocked) What?
Pacey: Jo, tomorrow everything changes.
Joey: Not us.
Pacey: Even us Jo. As much as I hate to say it, when we pull into Capeside tomorrow this all ends.
Joey: (scared) What are you saying?
Pacey: Im saying that this summer has been a dream. Weve had no one to care about but ourselves. The freedom weve had alone is mind blowing, but we wont have that in Capeside. We have school, family, friends, and responsibilities.
Joey: That wont change that I love you, Pacey. I know thats what youre thinking, but its not going to happen. I want to be with you.
Pacey: (he kisses her) Thank you.
Joey reaches behind her to unzip her dress, but Paceys hands encircle hers.
Pacey: Not yet Jo.
Joey: Pacey, I want this night to be perfect.
Pacey: It already has been, and we dont need to have sex to prove that.
Joey looks up at him.
Pacey: We have all the time in the world. I dont want to rush things.
Joey drops her hands, and stares at him contemplating what he said.
Joey: Youre right, and I hate it when youre right.
Pacey: Get used to it Potter. Im always right.
Joey: Jerk.
Pacey grins.
Joey: Just for the record, you want to have sex with me though, right?
Pacey: Oh hells yeah.
Joey: Just checking.
Pacey: (laughing) You have no idea.
Joey looks towards the bed, and Pacey follows her gaze.
Pacey: Shall we go to bed? Its going to be one hell of a day tomorrow.
Joey: Yeah. (sarcastically) Looking forward to that.
Pacey: Every things going to be all right, Jo. I promise.
Pacey kisses the top of her head.
Joey: Thank you.
Pacey: For what?
Joey: The perfect evening to end a perfect summer.
Pacey takes her face in his hands, and kisses her.
Fade out...
