Int. Potter B&B (Night of Day 1)
Joey is sitting at the kitchen table. A stack of about six large envelopes sits on the table. She picks up an empty envelope, and slides a stack of papers into it, and seals it. She sets it on top of the others. Bessie walks in wearing a robe.
Bessie: What are you doing up this late?
Bessie walks to the fridge, and pulls out a carton of milk.
Joey: I just thought Id finish this up before I went to sleep. Hows Alexander?
Bessie pours herself a glass of milk.
Bessie: Finally asleep thank God. (she carries her glass over to the table) Do you think you can take him to the clinic tomorrow? (she sits down across from Joey.) I wouldnt ask, but the roof guy is coming tomorrow. I dont think itd do any of us any good to have a leaky roof on this place during the winter.
Joey: Yeah sure.
Bessie: Thank you. (Bessie looks at the stack of envelopes) Your applications?
Joey: All seven of them.
Bessie picks up the top one.
Bessie: (raising an eyebrow) Columbia?
Joey shrugs.
Bessie: (looking at the next one) NYU (picking up the next one) UCLA (the next one) Northwestern. These are all so far away.
Joey: (defensively) Is that a problem?
Bessie: No, not all. I just thought...
Joey: (accusatory) You thought what?
Bessie: You may want to stay close to home.
Joey: Because of Pacey right?
Bessie: It was just a thought Jo.
Joey: Well Im applying to Northeastern, and Boston University too.
Bessie: You should go where you want.
Joey: I know that.
Bessie: Have you talked to Pacey about it?
Joey: He made his choice without asking me, so why should I ask for his approval about where I apply?
Bessie: Im not saying that.
Joey: What are you saying?
Bessie: That you cant not talk to him for the rest of the year. You had a fight. You need to talk about it.
Joey: I dont know what to say.
Bessie: Maybe you dont need to say anything. (Bessie stands up) Maybe you just need to listen. Goodnight Jo.
Bessie walks out of the kitchen.
Fade to Credits...
Act 1
Int. Capeside High (Day 2)
Andie and Jack walk into the High School.
Andie: So hes moving to New York in a week. (Jack nods) Howd he find a place so fast?
Jack: Hes staying with his aunt while hes there.
Andie: Thats convenient.
Jack: Yeah.
Andie: (stopping and turning to Jack) Jack, are you going to be okay?
Jack: Ill be fine.
Andie: Are you just saying that so I wont worry?
Jack: Thats your MO.
Andie: (giving him a look) Very funny.
They continue walking.
Jack: Andie Ill be okay.
Andie: I just worry about you. I mean this is the first real relationship youve had since...(her voice trails off)
Jack: Since Ive admitted I was gay?
Andie: Right, and well I just dont want to see you give up on love because of this.
Jack: Whos giving up? Charles is moving. He isnt dead.
Andie: Have you guys talked about it?
Jack: About what?
Andie: What happens to your relationship when he moves. I mean is it over, or are you going to do the long distance thing.
Jack: We havent really talked about it.
Andie: Maybe you should.
Andie stops as she sees Daniel at his locker. Jack follows her gaze.
Jack: Maybe you should take your own advice.
Andie: What do you mean?
Jack: You know what I mean. (Jack nods towards Daniel)
Andie: Everythings fine with Daniel.
Jack: And what exactly are you and Daniel again?
Andie: Let it go Jack. Its getting old.
Jack: I will not. Youve been with the guy for over a month, and...
Andie: (cuts him off) Jack its my life. Ive got everything under control.
Jack: (doubtful) Right.
Andie: Bye Jack.
Andie walks towards Daniel. Daniel is looking through his locker searching for something when Andie comes up.
Andie: Hey.
Daniel: (distracted) Hey.
Andie: So I was thinking this afternoon we could take that drive down the coast.
Daniel: (not looking at her still searching through his locker) I was kidding.
Andie: (hurt, and a little angry) Yeah I was kidding too (pause) but maybe we could do something else.
Daniel: Cant.
Andie: You have other plans?
Daniel: Something like that.
Andie: Oh (she pauses) Daniel?
Daniel: Yeah?
Andie: Is it something I did?
Daniel: (finally looking at Andie) What??
Andie: Its just well... (stopping) Did I do something to make you not want to be around me?
Daniel: (annoyed) What could you have possibly done?
Andie: I dont know.
Daniel: Andie, I just have something I have to do okay?
He pulls out a piece of paper and shoves it into his backpack.
Andie: Okay.
Daniel: (sighing he rests his hand on her shoulder) Look well take that drive down the coast another day okay?
Andie: (with a shrug) Yeah whatever.
Andie turns around, and Daniel watches her as she walks away.
Int. Capeside High Cafeteria (Day 2)
Pacey is sitting at a table with his lunch in front of him. Hes not really eating just staring at his food. He looks up hopefully when a tray is set across from him. His face falls when he sees Jen.
Jen: Dont look so disappointed.
Pacey: Sorry.
Jen: (sitting down) So whats the deal?
Pacey: What do you mean?
Jen: I mean why are you sitting here, and Joey is sitting over there.
Jen looks across the cafeteria where Joey is sitting with Dawson. Pacey shrugs.
Jen: You guys have a fight?
Pacey: Has anyone ever told you youre damn nosy?
Jen: (with a smile) Has anyone told you youre damn touchy?
Pacey: (chuckling) Im just not having a good life right now.
Jen: (shrugging) I think its going around, so talk to me Pace.
They sit in silence for a while.
Pacey: Im not going to college.
Jen: (staring at Pacey in shock) Wow.
Pacey: Yeah.
Jen: I take it Joey was none too happy about this. (Pacey looks at her and nods) Im sorry Pace, what did she say?
Pacey: Nothing really. She just kind of stormed out of the room, and I havent talked to her since.
Jen gives him a sympathetic smile, and Pacey glances over to where Joey is sitting with Dawson.
Int. Capeside High (Day 2)
Dawson and Joey are sitting across from each other. Joey is facing in Paceys direction.
Dawson: It was so amazing. To be able to look at this baby that is growing inside of my mother. I mean they cant tell what it is yet, and to be honest the picture didnt even look like a baby to me. It was more like this white blob, but still. (Dawson pauses and looks at Joey who is staring across the cafeteria) Are you listening to me Jo?
Joey: (snapping out of it) Yeah of course. Thats so wonderful Dawson.
Dawson gives her a quizzical baffled look. He glances over his shoulder, and sees Pacey talking to Jen.
Dawson: Is everything okay Jo?
Joey: (fake smile) Everythings fine.
Dawson: What was I talking about?
Joey: You were talking about...(Joey stops, and rests her head on her hand) Im sorry Dawson.
Dawson: (swallowing, and sort of stammering) Did something umm happen with Pacey?
Joey looks at Dawson with confusion.
Dawson: I was just you know worried about you. You seem so distracted, and well sad.
Joey: I dont want to talk about it.
Dawson: Okay. (hurt) I mean yeah I understand.
Joey: Dawson Im sorry, but I cant talk to you about Pacey. I just cant.
Dawson: Jo, you said if we were going to be friends again we would have to talk about Pacey.
Joey: I know, but...(her voice trails off) Dawson: But what?
Joey: Maybe I was wrong.
Dawson: (really confused) About what?
Joey: About us Dawson (Dawson looks at her puzzled) about us being able to just go back and be friends again like we were before.
Dawson: What do you mean Jo?
Joey: Just who are we trying to fool here Dawson? I know you dont want to hear about Pacey, and my problems.
Dawson: Well...
Joey: Be honest.
Dawson: Okay I dont, but I want us to be friends again.
Joey: (shaking her head) Itll never be the same.
Dawson: It can be.
Joey: Dawson we have to face reality here. Things have changed, and I dont just mean Pacey and me. I mean when I was at your filming. I didnt belong anymore, and it does neither of us any good to pretend things are the same.
Dawson: So you just want to erase a lifetime of friendship away.
Joey: No, of course not. Im just saying maybe we should stop fooling ourselves, and acting like everything is the same, because I cant do that anymore.
Dawson: Okay. (silence) So what do we do?
Joey: (shaking her head) I dont know. (silence)
Joey stands up.
Joey: Ill see ya later Dawson.
Dawson: Jo, dont just leave. Well work it out.
Joey: I know, but I just have to go now. I cant explain it.
Dawson: (sadly) Okay.
Joey smiles, and walks away. Dawson drops his head into his hands. He slaps his forehead with his palm a few times out of frustration.
Tallulah: So weve moved on to self flagellation. Well at least the lockers are safe.
Dawson looks up to see Tallulah standing next to him with an amused smile.
Dawson: (flustered) We have to stop meeting like this.
Tallulah: (smiling) Maybe we should plan a meeting then.
Dawson: (surprised) Like a date?
Tallulah: No not like a date an actual date, unless that was your girlfriend who just left.
Dawson: (quickly) No.
Tallulah: To the date, or to the girlfriend?
Dawson: Sorry. I mean shes just a friend. (pause) A date would be great.
Tallulah: (smiling) Cool.
Dawson: How about Friday night?
Tallulah: Sounds like a plan. Ill see you then.
Tallulah drops a piece of paper of the table in front of Dawson and walks away. Dawson picks it up, and unfolds it. It reads- Tallulah 555-6767 Call me
Int. Clinic (Afternoon of Day 2)
Joey walks into the clinic carrying Alexander who is fussing.
Joey: (rocking Alexander in her arms) Shhh. Youll be better soon.
Joey walks up to the check in counter.
Joey: Hi, he needs to see a doctor.
Nurse: Whats ailing him today?
Joey: Earache.
Nurse: (playing with Alexander hair) Oh poor baby. (she produces a clipboard form the counter) Just fill this out, return it to me, and well get him in to see the doctor okay?
Joey smiles her thanks, and sits down with the clipboard. She starts filling the form out. She stops when she hears a familiar voice.
Nurse: I just need you to sign this Daniel.
Joey looks over to the counter, and sees Daniel there. Hes signing the form.
Nurse: Thank you.
Daniel: And a copy of this will be sent to the Boston DAs office right?
Joeys mouth drops open.
Nurse: Of course.
Daniel: Thank you.
Daniel turns around, and stops in his tracks when he sees Joey. A look of guilt crosses over his face. Joey smiles nervously.
Daniel: Hey.
Joey: Hey.
Alexander starts fussing again. Joey starts to rock him.
Daniel: (nodding to Alexander) Yours?
Joey: (shocked) What?
Daniel: The baby.
Joey: Oh no. My sisters. He has an earache.
Daniel: Poor guy.
Joey: Yeah.
Awkward silence.
Daniel: (looking down) Umm Joey...
Joey: Yeah.
Daniel: Nothing. (looking up) Ill see ya around.
Joey: See ya.
Daniel walks out of the clinic, and Joey watches him with confused curiosity as Alexander tugs on her hair.
Int. Learys Fresh Fish (Night of Day 2)
Jen is working. Shes standing at a table putting out some silverware. Andie walks up to her.
Andie: Hey Jen.
Jen: (looking up) Hey Andie. Dawsons not here.
Andie: Actually I was looking for you.
Jen: Well you found me. Whats up?
Andie: Is there somewhere we can talk?
Jen: Sure.
Jen finishes putting down the silverware, and walks towards the back with Andie following her. They go into the storeroom.
Jen: (curiously) So whats up?
Andie: I need some advice.
Jen sits down on a milk crate.
Jen: Im all ears.
Andie starts pacing.
Andie: See theres this guy.
Jen: Daniel?
Andie: Right Daniel, and well weve been hanging out a lot, and stuff, and I really like him, but I think he likes Joey.
Jen: (shocked) Joey? Joey Potter?
Andie: Yeah.
Jen: (confused) Why do you think that?
Andie: I dont know. I mean I just get that feeling because every chance he gets hes with her, and when he came to Mrs. Freckerlings last week he came with Joey, and then he left with Joey, and...
Jen: (cutting her off) Maybe theyre just friends.
Andie: (stopping she looks right at Jen) Am I being stupid?
Jen: Well I really cant say since I dont know the guy, or how he is with Joey, but maybe you should just ask him about it.
Andie grabs a milk carton. She sets it on the ground across from Jen, and sits down.
Andie: Thats just it. I tried to talk to him about it today and he blew me off. Ever since last week hes been blowing me off.
Jen: Andie I want to help you. I really do, but unless you find out what hes thinking I dont know what to tell you. Maybe hes having a bad week.
Andie: Maybe. I really like him Jen.
Jen: (smiling) I can tell.
Andie: We have so much fun together, and he makes me do things I would never do.
Andie lifts her shirt revealing her pierced belly button.
Jen: (shocked) You pierced your belly button?
Andie: (nodding) But I cant help thinking that hes just having fun you know?
Jen: (with of a look of realization) Oh see now its all clear.
Andie: What do you mean?
Jen: You want more. Right now you guys are just hanging out, fooling around a little, but you want more. You want a relationship.
Andie: (quietly) Yeah, and I dont think he does.
Jen: The only way to find out is to ask him.
Andie: Yeah I guess I knew that. I just needed someone to talk to.
Jen: You can talk to me anytime.
Andie: (smiling) Thanks.
Int. Charles Apartment (Night of Day 2)
Its obvious Charles is in the process of packing up his stuff for his move. Half filled packing boxes are scattered throughout the apartment, and the shelves, and walls are bare. Jack and Charles are sitting on the couch watching TV. Neither is really watching. Jack casts a side ways glance at Charles, and looks away as Charles glances towards Jack. Charles looks back at the TV. Jack again looks towards Charles.
Charles: (turning towards Jack) Something on your mind Jack?
Jack: (looking back at the TV) No, not really.
Charles turns back to the TV, but there is an uneasy tension between them.
Jack: Whats going to happen (pause) with us?
Charles picks up the remote, and turns the TV off. He turns to Jack moving his whole body to face him.
Charles: I guess we should talk about this.
Jack: (still facing the TV) Yeah.
Charles: What do you want to happen?
Jack: (stuttering) I...I...(sighing) I dont know. I wish things didnt have to change at all.
Charles: I know.
Jack: (turning to face Charles) I mean I know they have to. Im not that nave.
Charles: I dont think its nave. I dont want things to change either, but...
Jack: (cutting him off) You have to go. I understand that, and wouldnt want you to do anything else.
Charles: Jack long distance relationships are hard for everyone.
Jack: Do you want to have a long distant relationship?
Charles: Well I dont want to lose what we have, but then again I dont want to make you suffer through that.
Jack: Isnt it my choice?
Charles: It is, but its also mine. Ill be in a new place meeting new people.
Jack: Right. I understand.
Charles: (grasping his hand) Jack, Im trying to be realistic. Its not how I feel. Im not going to New York with the hope of meeting someone else, but it could happen, and I dont want either of us to feel trapped.
Jack: I wouldnt feel trapped.
Charles: You say that now, but youll meet new people, and youll be lonely, and I just dont want to be the person holding you back. I want you to be happy.
Jack: Do you know how long it took me to find you? How much pain, confusion, and heartbreak I suffered before I met you. You make me feel comfortable with myself, with who I am, for the first time in my life. I dont want to go through that again.
Charles: Im so sorry Jack.
Jack: So am I.
Fade out...
Act 2
Int. Capeside High (Day 3)
Jen is sitting in study hall reading a book. The chair across from her is grabbed, and flipped around backwards. Jen looks up as Dawson sits in the chair.
Dawson: I need some advice.
Jen: (closing her book) No I dont think you should go through with the sex change.
Dawson: (grinning) That wasnt the question.
Jen: (grinning) But thats my answer.
Dawson: Its good to see you smiling for a change.
Jen: I could say the same to you. So whats up?
Dawson: Well I have a date this weekend, and I dont know what to do.
Jen: Dawson I know its been awhile, but its like riding a bike. You just have to hop back on, start peddling, and it will all come back to you.
Dawson: Can we be serious for a moment?
Jen: (stifling a laugh) Sure, tell Jen your problem.
Dawson: Okay this girl, who I barely know, asked me out this weekend.
Jen: And thats a problem?
Dawson: No, not exactly. Im just not sure how this works. Am I supposed to plan this date, or is she going to.
Jen: Well have you talked to her?
Dawson: Im supposed to call her.
Jen: Okay Dawson Im not following you here?
Dawson: Im just not used to girls asking me out. I mean this doesnt happen to me everyday. Im just not sure how it works. Im not sure if the rules are different.
Jen: You make dating sound like a game of Parcheesi.
Dawson: (standing up) Okay youre not being serious.
Jen: Im sorry Dawson I just dont see why you are stressing out so much. Its a date like any other date. Its not 1950, it doesnt matter who asks who out its just a date.
Dawson: (sitting back down) So what youre saying is I should just...
Jen: (cutting in) Go with the flow.
Dawson: That wasnt exactly the answer I was hoping for.
Jen: What answer did you want Dawson? Every woman is different. I cant tell you what shes expecting just because we share the same chromosome combination. Some girls like guys to be well the guy, and other girls are independent and dont like that. Youre going to have to feel your way through this one Dawson. And if its any help she asked you out, so she obviously likes you, so just be yourself.
Dawson: (hesitantly) Be myself.
Jen: Dawson, if there is one thing you are good at its being Dawson Leary.
Dawson: Sometimes I dont know if thats such a good thing.
Jen: Sometimes its the hardest thing in the world to be your self.
Dawson: Thanks Jen.
Jen: Im happy for you Dawson. Im happy to see you getting back out there, and moving on.
Dawson: Me too, and soon it will be your turn.
Jen: Not too soon. I dont think Ive recovered from the last psycho I dated, so Im not too anxious to run out and find another one.
Dawson: I am sorry about last week.
Jen: (waving her hand as to dismiss the idea) It wasnt your fault. I just want to bury it all, and forget that Henry Parker was ever a part of my life.
Through the window we see Henry watching Jen and Dawson talk. He doesnt look too happy watching Jen and Dawson talk and laugh.
Int. Capeside High (Day 3)
Joey is walking down the hallway of the school. Daniel passes her.
Joey: (stopping) Hey Daniel.
Daniel: (not stopping) Hey.
Joey looks at him curiously before following him.
Joey: (catching up with him) Daniel.
Daniel stops, and turns around to look at her. He waits for Joey to say something.
Joey: About yesterday...I have no idea why you were there...
Daniel: (cutting her off) Youre right you dont.
Joey: I was just going to say its none of my business, but if you want to talk you can trust me.
Daniel: Theres nothing to talk about.
Joey: Okay.
Daniel walks away, and Joey turns around and runs into Pacey.
Joey: (surprised) Pacey.
Pacey: Jo.
The moment is awkward.
Joey: So umm how have you been?
Pacey: Is that a rhetorical question, or did you really want me to answer that?
Joey: Pacey, I dont want to fight with you right now.
Pacey: Who says were fighting?
Joey: Thats not what I meant.
Pacey: Well what did you mean?
Joey: That I dont want to have this conversation in the middle of a crowded hallway.
Pacey: Did you want to schedule it for later?
Joey: Pacey why are acting like this?
Pacey: How am I supposed to act? I mean come on Jo, you havent returned any of my calls, or spoken to me in over a week. I dont know what to think, I dont know what to do, and right now I dont even know what I feel.
Joey: (shocked and angry) You dont know how you feel? (tears threatening to fall) I may be confused right now Pacey (pause) about the future, but I have never been confused about how I feel about you.
Pacey: Jo, Im sorry (resting his hand on her shoulder) I didnt mean that.
Joey: But its what you said.
Joey pushes by Pacey and rushes down the hallway.
Pacey: (calling out after her) Jo.
Int. Charles Apartment (Day 3)
Jack is standing in the living room packing some books in a box. Charles comes out of the bedroom, and walks over to Jack. He picks up one of the books.
Charles: I never realized how much crap I had until I had to pack it all. (Jack laughs) Im not even sure I want to take all this stuff.
Jack: (stopping) What are you going to so with it all?
Charles: I dont know. I could get a storage unit, Im sure when my internship is over Ill be right back here.
Jack: I can keep some of it at my house if you want. I mean we have this attic that has nothing in it except for ...(Jack stops)
Charles: (curiously) Except for what?
Jack: (quietly) Tims stuff.
Charles: I can get a storage unit.
Jack: No, dont be silly.
Charles: Are you sure? (Jack nods) Thanks Jack.
Jack: What are friends for.
Int. Dawsons Bedroom (Night of Day 3)
Dawson stares at the slip of paper Tallulah gave him with her phone number. He picks up the phone, and starts to dial, but hangs up when there is a knock on the door. Mitch walks into his room.
Dawson: Hey Dad.
Mitch: (noticing the phone in his hand) Am I interrupting?
Dawson: Not really, so whats up?
Mitch: Nothing. Your mother and I were just talking.
Dawson: (sitting down he interrupts) Oh this cant be good.
Mitch: (giving him the Mitch look) Dawson, since me, and your mother heard we were going to have another child weve been thinking and talking a lot about our family. (Mitch sits next to Dawson) We realize we have put you through a lot the past few years.
Dawson: (interrupting again) Its in the past Dad. Everythings fine now.
Mitch: We realize that, but we also realize that we really havent spent much time together as a family, and with the baby on its way, and you heading off to college that chance may soon be lost to us.
Dawson: (not really following Mitch) Okay, so you like want to institute family game night or something?
Mitch: Dawson Im being serious. (Dawson suppresses a snicker) A friend of your mothers gave her three tickets for the Capeside Theatres performance of West Side Story.
Dawson: You want me to go to a musical?
Mitch: Its a really good musical. I took your mother to see it when we were first dating.
Dawson: I saw the movie. I didnt really like it.
Mitch: Dawson, indulge your mother and I okay?
Dawson: (sighing) Okay fine Ill go. When is it?
Mitch: Friday night.
Dawson: (realization hits him) I cant. I have a date.
Mitch: (surprised) You have a date?
Dawson: Yeah.
Mitch: (curiously) Anyone we know?
Dawson: I can probably safely say no. I just met her.
Mitch: (resting his hand on Dawsons shoulder) Congratulations Dawson. Im happy for you.
Dawson: (with a weird look) Thanks.
Mitch: Well do the family thing another night then.
Dawson: Sure.
Mitch smiles at Dawson one more time before leaving. Dawson shakes his head, and lifts the phone up again. He dials the number that by now he has memorized and waits.
Dawson: Hello, is Tallulah there?
Int. McPhee House (Night of Day 3)
Andie is sitting at the kitchen counter reading a textbook while eating an apple. She takes a bite, and turns the page. The kitchen door opens, and Jack, and Charles walk in carrying boxes. Andie looks up.
Andie: Whoa whats all this?
Jack: (setting his boxes on the kitchen counter) Charles stuff.
Andie: (turning to Charles with a smile) I thought you were moving to New York, not in with us.
Charles: (chuckling) I am. Jack was kind enough to volunteer to store some of my more useless stuff while Im away.
Andie: (looking at Jack with surprise, and happiness) He did?
Mr. McPhee walks into the kitchen.
Jack: Yeah I did.
Mr. McPhee: Did what?
Mr. McPhee looks from face to face.
Jack: Hey Dad.
Mr. McPhee: Jack, Charles hows it going?
Charles: Good, and you?
Mr. McPhee: Pretty good. I heard about your internship with The New Yorker. Congratulations. Thats a very prestigious magazine.
Charles: Thank you. Im very excited about the opportunity.
Mr. McPhee: (turning to Jack) So whats with all the boxes?
Jack: Umm I told Charles he could store some of his things he isnt going to take to New York in the attic.
Charles: I hope thats okay, sir.
Mr. McPhee: Yeah its fine. Theres plenty of room up there.
Jack: Thanks.
Mr. McPhee: Need any help with those boxes?
Charles: Theres a few more in the car.
Mr. McPhee: Let me help you with those.
Mr. McPhee follows Charles out the door.
Andie and Jack look at each other.
Andie: Hes really trying Jack.
Jack: I know, but it still has a tendency to shock me.
Andie: (with a smile) Me too, but he isnt just acting.
Jack: I know.
Andie: So you and Charles, did you guys talk?
Jack: We did.
Andie: (with a smile) And...
Jack: And were friends. His moving wont change that.
Andie: Friends?
Mr. McPhee, and Charles return carrying more boxes ending Andie and Jacks conversation.
Ext. Joeys Wall (Night of Day 3)
Joey is standing in the lot by her wall. She stares at the wall deep in thought. The wall has been covered with an ad for the local hardware store. As Joey gazes at the wall Jen walks by, and seeing Joey heads over.
Jen: (quietly so not to startle her) Hey.
Joey: (turning around surprised) Hey, I didnt see you there.
Jen: Yeah you were concentrating pretty hard on that wall.
Joey: My wall.
Jen: You own Harveys Hardware?
Joey: (laughs lightly) No, I mean Pacey rented this wall for me to paint last year.
Jen: I know.
Joey: I wish I had painted something on it.
Jen: What would you have painted?
Joey: (shaking her head) I dont know. I was so confused at the time I couldnt think straight. My emotions were so overwhelming, and painful at the time that I couldnt sort them out much less express how I was feeling for the whole town to see.
Jen: Thats understandable. (pausing) What would you paint on it now?
Joey: (shrugging) Doesnt matter. Its not mine anymore.
Jen: True, but there are other mediums to express yourself, and what youre feeling.
Joey: Its not the same. This wall is why I love Pacey so much. Not that he rented it for me, but the meaning behind it. He pushes me, challenges me, supports me, and believes in me. I just wish I could do the same for him. Encourage him to be everything I know he can be.
Jen: Do you want my opinion? (Joey shrugs) You want to encourage him, push him well maybe youre pushing him in the wrong direction. (Joey looks at Jen confused) You fell in love with Pacey, who he was, and you know him better than anyone Joey. Hes really scared right now, and he needs you to support him not criticize him.
Joey: Im not criticizing him.
Jen: Not necessarily, but youre disappointed in him.
Joey: Im just scared Jen.
Jen: So is he, so am I, so is everyone else. The future is a scary thing, and Pacey made a tough decision. He risked disappointing you, and losing you, but do you really want him to do something he doesnt want to do?
Joey: No.
Jen: You see him not going to college as throwing away his future, but its not. It may not be what you had in mind for him, but its choosing the future he wants.
Joey: Hes choosing a future without me.
Jen: Can I ask you a question? (Joey shrugs) Weve established what Pacey does for you, but what do you do for Pacey?
Joey: (startled by the question) What kind of question is that?
Jen: A simple one. Youre saying you dont encourage him, or support him, so what do you do for him?
Joey: (stammering) I love him.
Jen: He needs your love now Joey. More than ever before.
Joey turns back to the wall, and Jen takes this as her cue to leave. She walks away as Joey continues to stare at the wall.
Fade out...
ACT 3
Ext. Capeside High (Day 4)
Joey is sitting at a table reading a textbook. Daniel walks up behind her and sits down backwards so his back is leaning against the table. Joey looks over slightly surprised.
Daniel: Hey.
Joey: (nervously) Hey.
Daniel: Im sorry I snapped at you yesterday.
Joey: (with a shrug) Its okay. You were right its none of my business.
There is a silence, as Joey waits for Daniel to say something, and Daniel contemplates what to say.
Daniel: Have you ever been in a situation where you knew you had to tell someone something cause they have a right to know, but you just cant find the right words.
Joey: Actually I have, and I didnt tell them someone else did, and Im not sure if that made it worse, but I think it did. (resting her hand on his arm) You should talk to Andie.
Daniel: Im going to tell her.
Joey: Good. She may just surprise you, and understand.
Daniel: You havent even asked what exactly Im talking about yet.
Joy: Its none of my business.
Daniel: (with a grin) But youre dying to know arent you?
Joey: (with a smile) Well it is intriguing.
Daniel: I knew it.
Joey punches him lightly in the arm.
Cut to.
Andie standing off in the distance with a sad look on her face as she watches Joey and Daniel laughing, and joking around.
Int. Jens Bedroom (Day 4)
Jen is sitting on her bed listening to music, and reading a magazine. Theres a knock on the door.
Jen: (looking up) Come in.
The door opens, and Jack walks in.
Jen: Hey, what are you doing here?
Jack flops down on the bed lying next to Jen.
Jack: I need some advice.
Jen tosses her magazine down.
Jen: You know I should start charging you guys.
Jack: (confused) What?
Jen: Nothing. I just seem to be dishing out a lot of advice lately.
Jack: Ive noticed the rash of heartbreak going around.
Jen: It must be the weather. (pause) So whats up?
Jack: Charles thinks we should stay friends.
Jen: You dont want that?
Jack: No I want to be friends, but...
Jen: (cutting him off) You want to stay more as well.
Jack nods.
Jen: Have you told him this?
Jack: Sort of.
Jen: (cocking an eyebrow) Sort of?
Jack: I cant just come out and say that.
Jen: Why not?
Jack: What if its not what he wants?
Jen: Well desperate times call for desperate measures.
Jack: Did you read that in a fortune cookie?
Jen: If youre just going to mock my advice...
Jack: (cutting her off) Sorry.
Jen: Jack you have to tell him how you feel. If you dont then you can blame no one but yourself.
Jack: But what if he rejects me?
Jen: Then at least you can tell yourself you tried, and you have the added bonus that hes leaving and you wont have to see him again. (Jack chuckles.) Tell him you love him Jack.
Jack: (sitting up) I didnt say anything about love.
Jen: Are you denying it? (Jack looks away) I know you Jack.
Jack: (quietly) Better than anyone else.
Jen: I know you love him, and it will kill you every day if you dont tell him.
Jack: Itll kill me if I make a fool of myself too.
Jen: What is love but continuously making a fool of yourself?
Jack: You should have your own show to spout off these wise words.
Jen: Yeah Jen Lindley the Love Doctor.
Jack laughs.
Jack: (turning serious) I dont know what Id do without you.
Jen: Youd get off my bed, and go talk to Charles.
Jen shoves his shoulders, and Jack stands up laughing.
Jack: Okay I can take a hint. (pausing) Thanks.
Jen: (sadly) I just want you to be happy.
Jack leans down, and hugs Jen.
Jack: I want the same for you.
Jen: Lets work on making you happy first, and then well worry about me.
Jack: (pulling away) Wish me luck.
Jen: Good luck.
Jack looks at Jen once more before walking out of the room. Jen sighs, and picks up the magazine again.
Ext. Streets of Capeside (Night of Day 4)
Dawson, and Tallulah are walking down the street.
Dawson: I cant believe youve lived all those places.
Tallulah: Well its one of the perks of being an army brat, but also one of the inconveniences.
Dawson: But still to live all those places it sounds so...
Tallulah: (cutting him off) Adventurous?? Exciting?? Interesting??
Dawson: Well yeah.
Tallulah: (laughing) It sounds that way, but the reality is much different believe me.
Dawson: Well for someone who hasnt been further than Philadelphia it sounds like quite the life.
Tallulah: Youre a romantic arent you?
Dawson: Is that a bad thing?
Tallulah: No, but you believe in the happy ending.
Dawson: I want the happy ending. Doesnt mean I believe in it.
Tallulah: (stopping) A romantic pessimist? Now thats interesting.
Dawson: (stopping to look at her) Whys that interesting?
Tallulah: (starting to walk again) Its a contradiction, an oxymoron, and here I thought you were pretty cut and dry.
Dawson: I think I was just insulted.
Tallulah: (laughing) I didnt mean it that way.
Dawson: (defensive) You think Im boring.
Tallulah: Now dont get all over sensitive on me Dawson. I hardly know you well enough to say youre boring.
Dawson: (sarcastically) That brings me such solace.
Tallulah: Dawson if I didnt think you were potentially interesting would I have asked you out?
Dawson: Why did you ask me out? I cant say Im not curious.
Tallulah: Do I have to have a reason?
Dawson: Well yeah.
They stop in front of the Capeside Theatre.
Tallulah: Why?
Dawson: Of all the guys you could have asked out why me?
Tallulah: You give me too much credit.
Dawson: And youre dodging the question.
Mitch: Dawson.
Dawson turns around in shocked surprise to see Gale and Mitch standing a few feet away from him. He looks up at the building finally realizing where they were.
Dawson: Hey Dad.
Mitch and Gale look at Tallulah.
Tallulah: Hi, Im Tallulah.
Dawson: (shaking his head he turns to Tallulah) Sorry these are my parents.
Tallulah: (with a smile) I gathered that.
Gale: Nice to meet you.
Mitch: Yes nice to meet you Tallulah.
Tallulah: Its nice to meet you.
Dawson: (turning to Tallulah) I think we have plans that we have to get to right?
Tallulah: Actually this is the plan.
Dawson: (confused) Meeting my parents?
Tallulah: (laughing) No going to the theatre.
Dawson: (disappointment evident in his voice) This was the surprise?
Tallulah: I take it its not a happy surprise.
Mitch: (interrupting) Were going to go find our seats. It was nice meeting you Tallulah.
Tallulah: You too.
Mitch guides Gale inside the theatre.
Dawson: That was awkward.
Tallulah: You have nice parents. (Dawson gives her a look of disbelief) Its true. My dad would have given you a thirty question interrogation, and a physical.
Dawson: Youre not serious. (Tallulah looks down) You are serious.
Tallulah: (with a teasing smile) I guess youll just have to find out.
Dawson: I dont know if this is a good idea. I mean I usually dont go on dates with my parents present.
Tallulah: (slightly annoyed) If you dont want to go we can do something else.
Dawson: (reluctantly) Well you already have tickets.
Tallulah: (turning away) You dont want to go.
Dawson: (quickly) No we can go.
Tallulah: (turning to face him) Are you sure cause Im not putting up with you sulking all night.
Dawson: There will be no sulking. Ill admit its not something I would normally do, and my parents are in there, which is awkward, but we can go.
Tallulah: Youre sure?
Dawson: (nodding) Yeah.
Tallulah: (linking her arm through Dawsons) You need to loosen up Dawson.
Dawson is slightly offended by her comment. They walk towards the entrance to the theatre.
Int. Charles Apartment (Night of Day 4)
Charles apartment is bare except for the sofa, table, TV, empty bookshelves, and stacks of boxes against the wall. Charles is sitting on the sofa flipping through channels on the TV.
Charles: (to himself) And theres nothing on. Big shock there.
There is a knock on the door, and Charles flips off the TV before standing up and walking to the door. He opens it to reveal Jack looking sort of nervous, and anxious.
Charles: (happy) Jack.
Jack: Hey Charles can I come in?
Charles: Of course. (noticing Jacks nervousness) Is everything okay?
Jack: Why wouldnt everything be okay?
Charles: You just seem a little...
Jack: (cutting him off) A little what?
Charles: Nervous.
Jack: Im not. Im fine. So what are you up to?
Charles: Navigating the black hole that is television with no cable. (Jack laughs) Do you want something to drink? All I have to offer is water, but if you want it its yours.
Jack: Umm yeah that would be great.
Charles walks into the kitchen, and grabs a paper cup off the counter.
Charles: I packed all the kitchen stuff already so all I have is paper cups.
Jack: Thats okay.
Charles opens the refrigerator, which is empty except for a gallon jug of water. He pours some of it into the paper cup, and hands it to Jack.
Jack: Thanks.
Jack gulps down the cup quickly.
Charles: I guess you were thirsty.
Jack: Yeah.
Jack crushes the cup in his hand.
Charles: Jack are you sure everything is okay?
Jack looks away and takes a deep breathe.
Jack: You know the other night when we talked.
Charles: (knowing exactly what Jack is referring to) Yeah.
Jack: Well Ive been thinking about it a lot since then, and I know we decided to be friends.
Charles: We did.
Jack: I dont want to be friends.
Charles: (sighing he leans against the kitchen counter) Jack I know it will be tough at first, but I really want us to try. I dont want to leave and not have you still be in my life.
Jack: Thats not what I mean. I know you think it will be hard to have a long distant relationship, and it will be, but I want to try.
Charles: Wow. I dont know what to say.
Jack: (quietly) Is that a no?
Charles: No. I mean no its not a no. Its a...(pausing) I dont know what to say. Jack Im just trying to do whats best for both of us.
Jack: I understand that. Really I do, but its not whats best for us. At least not for me. Do you want to be with me still?
Charles: (moving towards Jack) God, of course I do. Im trying not to be selfish.
Jack: Ive been unselfish my whole life, and right now I want to be selfish. I want to be selfish, and hang on to you, because... (Jack stops)
Charles: What?
Jack: (he takes a deep breathe) Because I love you.
Charles stares at Jack in shock as his words sink in. Jack waits nervously, and scared. Charles reaches out and pulls Jack into a hug. A look of relief, and happiness crosses over Jacks face.
Int. Dougs Apartment (Night of Day 4)
The front door opens, and Pacey walks in. He stops when he hears Weezers Say it Aint So. Pacey walks to the kitchen with a look of curiosity on his face. He stops in the doorway when he sees Sarah at the counter slicing vegetables. She is quietly singing along with the song.
Pacey: Hey.
Sarah: (startled she turns around) Pacey, I didnt hear you come in.
Pacey: Obviously. Dougies not here is he??
Sarah: No, why?
Pacey: He would never listen to this.
Pacey walks into the kitchen, and to the refrigerator.
Sarah: (laughing) Im trying to expand his musical tastes among other things.
Pacey: (opening the refrigerator) And for that I thank you.
Pacey pulls out a bottled juice, and cracks the lid. He takes a long drink while still standing in front of the open refrigerator.
Sarah: Would you hand me the tomatoes?
Pacey reaches into the refrigerator, and pulls out the tomatoes. He shuts the door, and hands them to Sarah.
Pacey: So youre like making dinner?
Sarah: (slicing a tomato) Yeah. I thought it would be nice to have dinner ready when Doug gets home.
Pacey: (curiously) Howd you get in?
Pacey takes another drink of his juice.
Sarah: Doug gave me a key.
Pacey almost spits out his juice, but manages to swallow. He starts coughing.
Sarah: (looking at him with concern) Are you okay?
Pacey: (still coughing slightly) Yeah, just a little surprised.
Sarah: (stopping her slicing) Is that okay? I mean that I have a key.
Pacey: (shrugging) Its Dougs place. I just crash on his couch.
Sarah: Pacey, thats not true. This is where you live, and I dont want to make you uncomfortable.
Pacey: Im not uncomfortable. Its fine.
Sarah: Okay (slicing the tomato again) I hope youre staying for dinner. Im making enough for everyone.
Pacey: (shrugging) Sure its not like I have anywhere else to go.
Sarah looks at Pacey sadly.
Int. Harveys Hardware (Night of Day 4)
Joey walks to the counter. A man in his fifties with gray hair and glasses is behind the counter looking at some papers.
Joey: Excuse me.
Harvey: (looking up) Can I help you miss?
Joey: Hi, Im looking for the owner.
Harvey: (removing his glasses) That would be me. How can I help you?
Joey: Hi, Im Joey Potter. Umm I was wondering if youd be willing to sell me your lease for the wall on Elm Street that you have your ad painted on.
Harvey: (confused) You want to buy my ad?
Joey: Not exactly. See the wall the ad is on means a lot to me.
Harvey: So you want the wall?
Joey: Yeah. I mean Id pay you for the lease.
Harvey: What do you want with a wall?
Joey: To paint on it.
Harvey: And it has to be that wall? (Joey nods) Why?
Joey: Some one bought the lease on that wall for me last spring, and I never painted anything on it before I left for the summer, and when I came back well you had purchased the lease. That wall means so much to me. He bought it for me when he had no hope that I would ever return his love, and yet he still did it. Hes so selfless, and caring, and he knows me so well. He pushes me, and encourages me, and sees in me all these wonderful things that I dont see, but he does, and he makes me believe them too. (pausing) I love him so much I cant even put it into words.
Harvey: But you can paint it?
Joey: (nodding) I think so.
Harvey: (smiling) Miss Potter, you can have the wall.
Joey: (smiling) Really? (Harvey nods) How much do I owe you?
Harvey: (shaking his head) Nothing.
Joey: Thank you, but I cant just take the wall. I owe you something.
Harvey: A beautiful wall when you are finished. My son convinced me to buy that wall. Im the only hardware store in town. I dont think I really need to advertise. (shrugging) And Im sucker for a love story.
Joey: Youre sure?
Harvey: Yes Miss Potter, Im sure.
Joey: Thank you so much.
Harvey nods, and puts his glasses back on. He looks back down at his papers, and Joey takes this as her cue to leave. She heads towards the door.
Ext. Capeside Theatre (Night of Day 4)
Dawson is waiting in the lobby. He sees his parents come out of the theatre. They wave and walk over.
Mitch: Hey Dawson.
Gale: Well did you enjoy the musical honey?
Dawson: It was okay.
Mitch: (smiling at Gale) It brings back such wonderful memories.
Gale smiles up at Mitch as they share the memories. Tallulah walks over and stands next to Dawson.
Dawson: Im glad you guys liked it.
Mitch: Hi Tallulah.
Tallulah: Hi.
Gale: Did you enjoy the performance?
Tallulah: It was all right. I shouldnt be surprised that it wasnt the best adaptation Ive seen of West Side Story, but so it goes.
Dawson: (turning to Tallulah) You didnt like it?
Tallulah: Well the actress playing Maria left a lot to be desired, and the actor playing Bernardo sure thought he was funny, but he should have stuck to the script, and the choreography was extremely simplified, but I guess this isnt Broadway, but then Ive never been a big fan of West Side Story anyways, seeing as how its just a hack rip off of Romeo and Juliet, but done right can be entertaining.
Mitch and Gale are looking at her sort of shocked by her bluntness.
Dawson: (slightly angry) You dont even like West Side Story?
Tallulah: (shrugging) Not really.
Mitch: (interrupting) Well we have to be heading home. Your mother shouldnt be out too late in her condition.
Gale: (slapping his arm lightly) Im pregnant not an invalid.
Mitch: Right, have a nice night you two. Well see you at home Dawson.
Dawson: Bye.
Mitch and Gale walk away. Dawson turns to Tallulah.
Dawson: (annoyed) If you dont even like West Side Story why did we come here?
Tallulah: What else is there to do in Capeside?? Go to the movies??
Dawson: (defensive) Whats wrong with the movies?
Tallulah: Please. I dont waste my time on that over sentimentalized, clichd, predictable, and unoriginal crap.
Dawson: Not all movies are unoriginal.
Tallulah: Im not talking independents, which we dont get in Capeside, but Hollywood mass-produced films that plague the cinemaplexes. Sure occasionally Hollywood churns out a good one like American Beauty, or Good Will Hunting, but more than likely we get Austin Powers, and Jurassic Park.
Dawson: Whats wrong with Jurassic Park?
Tallulah: Whats right with it? Its a fluffy, special effects driven, Spielberg fairy tale with absolutely no depth.
Dawson: (offended and angry) Or maybe youre a snob who cant see the depth in something made with more than a million dollars.
Tallulah: (almost laughing) Im a snob?
Dawson: Yes you are. So Jurassic Park wasnt made by some video store clerk on a shoestring budget, and yes its not realistic, but thats the point. Movies are a fantasy where anything is possible. Its leaving reality for 2 hours. Its existing in someone elses world. It doesnt have to have a great big social message, or explore the depths, and complexities of this world. It can be fun.
Tallulah: Ive obviously hit a nerve.
Dawson: (sighing) Lets just drop it.
Tallulah: Fine.
Dawson: Ill walk you home.
They walk off not talking.
Int. Potter B&B (Night of Day 4)
Joey is sitting at the kitchen table sketches spread out haphazardly all over the table. Her head is bent down as she concentrates on a sketch.
Andie: Hey.
Joeys head jerks up to see Andie standing in the doorway.
Andie: Bessie let me in.
Joey: Hey Andie.
Andie walks over to the table, and looks at the sketches.
Andie: These are good.
Joey: (looking at her curiously knowing she was there for a reason) Thanks.
Andie: Joey were friends right? I mean not best friends, but friends right?
Joey: (taken off guard by her question) Yeah of course.
Andie: Whats going on with you and Daniel?
Joey: (shocked) What?
Andie: Im just wondering cause Im so confused, and I know you have Pacey and everything, but you seem so comfortable around Daniel, and well Daniel wont talk to me, (sighing) and I just dont know what to think.
Joey: Well, you can stop thinking that.
Andie: (relieved) Its nothing?
Joey: Were friends, Andie. Nothing more. It will never be anything more. I love Pacey, and Daniel well he really likes you.
Andie: He doesnt act like it.
Joey: Hes going through a rough time right now, and...
Andie: (cutting her off) He talked to you about it?
Joey: Not exactly. (choosing her words carefully) I sort of just stumbled upon it.
Andie: (frustrated) Why wont he talk me?
Joey: I think hes worried you wont understand.
Andie: Why?
Joey: Andie have you told him about your past. About having to go to the hospital??
Andie: (looking down) No.
Joey: Well the reason you havent told him is probably the same reason he hasnt told you.
Andie: (looking up) Thanks Joey.
Joey: (shrugging) I didnt do anything.
Andie: (with a smile) Yeah you did.
Joey: (small smile) Youre welcome.
Int. Jens House (Night of Day 4)
Jen is sitting at the kitchen table filling out college applications. Grams walks in, and peers over Jens shoulder.
Grams: And what is this?
Jen: (hiding a smile) My college applications.
Grams: (smiling) On a Friday night? Im so proud of you Jennifer.
Jen: Well dont be too proud yet. I havent gotten in anywhere.
Grams: Dont be so negative. Any school would be lucky to have you.
Jen: Gotta love your optimistic spin on things.
Grams: You could use a little optimism instead of this cynical face you always wear.
Jen: I like my cynical face.
Grams: So it seems.
Jen smiles.
Grams: Well Im heading to bed. Good night Jennifer.
Jen: Night.
Grams squeezes Jens shoulder before leaving the room. Jen goes back to writing her applications. She writes for a while before stopping. She wraps her arms around her as she feels a chill. She looks up towards the window having the feeling that someone is watching her. She stands up and walks to the window and peers outside, but sees nothing. She pulls the curtains closed, and sits back down. She picks up her pen, but is still uneasy as she begins writing again.
Fade out...
Act 4
Int. Charles Apartment (Morning of Day 5)
Charles and Jack are asleep on the couch. Jack is sitting up with his head on the back of the sofa asleep, and Charles is sleeping with his head on Jacks thigh. Jack opens his eyes, and looks down at Charles and smiles. He ruffles his hair slightly. Charles stirs a wake, and opens his eyes.
Jack: Morning.
Charles: Morning.
Charles sits up, and leans back against the sofa running his hands through his hair.
Charles: Did you sleep like that all night? (Jack nods) Your neck must be killing you.
Jack: Im fine.
Charles smiles, and stands up.
Charles: Want some coffee?
Jack: Yeah sure.
Charles: (heading towards the kitchen) I can't function without coffee first thing in the morning.
Jack: It's almost noon.
Charles: Is it? I guess I'm lucky I don't have any plans till later. (stopping) Damn I packed the coffee pot.
Jack: (standing up, and walking towards the kitchen) You have plans later?
Charles: Yeah, last edition of the paper before I leave. Sort of my farewell. (turning to Jack who is standing in the kitchen doorway) After we wrap up this edition they're throwing me a farewell party did you want to go with me?
Jack: Yeah, if you want me to.
Charles: (he walks over to Jack and places his hand on his cheek) Of course I do.
Jack: (smiling) Wanna go get some coffee?
Charles: (smiling) I thought you'd never ask.
Int. Dawsons House (Day 5)
Dawson is sitting on his bed watching footage from his movie. Theres a knock on his door.
Dawson: Come in.
The door opens and Tallulah walk in. Dawson looks up and is stunned to see Tallulah in his doorway.
Tallulah: Hi.
Dawson: Hi.
Tallulah: Your parents said I should just come up.
Tallulah looks at the TV screen. Dawson shuts the TV off, and stands up.
Tallulah: You know what I did last night?
Dawson: Went on a really bad date?
Tallulah: When did you get funny?
Dawson: Do you realize that half of what you say comes across as an insult?
Tallulah: And do you realize that you take everything way too personally?
Dawson: I feel attacked.
Tallulah: And why is that???
Dawson: You insult me by scoffing at things that I care about.
Tallulah: So by having a different opinion than you I am attacking you?? Am I understanding you right?? You know what I did last night Dawson after you left? (Dawson shakes his head) I watched Jurassic Park.
Dawson: (with a semi smug look) And?
Tallulah: And its still crap. But thats just my opinion. What I did see though was what you saw in it. Youre a dreamer, and an idealist. Deny it all you want Dawson, but you dont just want the happy ending, you believe in it.
Dawson: Not anymore.
Tallulah: Why is that?? Cause you got hurt?? Someone hurt you real bad?? (Dawson looks away) All happy endings have a bumpy road along the way. People get hurt, scarred, and even eaten by digitally animated Dinosaurs. (Dawson chuckles)
Dawson: Now who believes in the happy ending?
Tallulah: I dont need to believe in the happy ending, cause Im happy right now. So what does it take to make Dawson Leary happy?
Dawson: I wish I knew.
Tallulah: How about starting out small.
Dawson: What do you mean?
Tallulah: This afternoon you and me and the movies.
Dawson: I thought you hated movies.
Tallulah: I do. Im not promising to like the movie, or not to rip it apart when its over, but even that has its own charms.
Dawson: You want to go out again. On another date?
Tallulah: Am I speaking English here?? Yes.
Dawson: Why?
Tallulah: Good Lord Dawson does everything have to have a reason.
Dawson: Usually.
Tallulah: Well then lets just say Im a glutton for punishment. (Dawson laughs) 4 oclock, meet you there?
Dawson: Ill be there.
Tallulah: All right. See ya then Dawson.
Tallulah turns and walks out of the room. Dawson smiles, and flops back onto his bed.
Ext. Daniels House (Day 5)
Daniel lives in a two story house in a nice neighborhood, but not too nice. Andie walks up to the door nervously. She stands in front of the door contemplating whether or not to ring the bell. She turns away before turning back, and ringing the bell. She waits shifting nervously before Daniels 10-year-old sister Becca opens the door.
Becca: Hi.
Andie: Hi, is Daniel home?
Becca: Yes.
Andie: (when Becca doesnt move) Can I talk to him?
Becca shrugs, and walks away from the door. Andie cautiously steps into the house. The house has a warm, welcoming feel to it. Its simple, but nice. Becca disappears up the stairs and Andie shuts the door, and stands in the hallway not sure what to do.
Mrs. Anderson (Daniels mother): (OS) Becca who was at the door?
She comes out of the kitchen, and stops when she sees Andie.
Mrs. Anderson: (surprised to see Andie in the hall) Oh hello there.
Andie: Hi, I was um looking for Daniel.
Mrs. Anderson: Are you a friend from school? We havent met any of Daniels friends.
Andie: (nodding) Hi Im Andie.
Mrs. Anderson: Nice to meet you Andie.
Andie: I was looking for Daniel?
Mrs. Anderson: (chuckling) Hes still sleeping. Ill go wake him.
Daniel: Not necessary Mom Im already up.
Daniel is coming down the stairs in a pair of drawstring navy blue sweats, a white wifebeater, and running his hand through his bed head.
Daniel: Hey Andie.
Andie: Hi.
Mrs. Anderson: It was nice meeting you Andie.
Andie: You too.
Mrs. Anderson goes back into the kitchen.
Andie: (looking at his appearance) Im sorry I woke you up.
Daniel: (shaking his head) Dont worry about it. (taking her arm) Lets talk on the porch.
Daniel leads Andie outside to the front porch, and sits on the porch swing. Andie sits next to him, but not too close.
Andie: You have a really nice house.
Daniel: Thanks.
Theres a silence.
Daniel: Look Andie...
Andie: (at the same time) Daniel I wanted...
Andie: (laughing) Sorry.
Daniel: It's okay. I just wanted to say that I know I've been distant lately, and I'm sorry, but it's not you.
Andie: I know, but you can talk to me Daniel.
Daniel: I can, but once you know everything there is to know about me, you might not want to be around me anymore.
Andie: (resting her hand on his thigh) I have the same fear. (Daniel looks up at her in surprise) There's a lot you don't know about me either.
Daniel looks away as he contemplates what to say. Andie waits looking at him expectantly. Finally, Daniel turns back to face her.
Daniel: I'm a recovering heroin addict.
Andie looks at Daniel. Her expression is one of both shock, and concern.
Daniel: (looking down) I OD'd about a year ago. Had to do the whole drug rehab and treatment thing.
Daniel stops, and looks at Andie.
Andie: You dont do drugs anymore though?
Daniel: No. Almost dying has a way of making you look at life differently, but once people have made up their mind about you... (his voice trails off)
Andie: I know. A year or so ago I had to go to a mental hospital for the summer. Im fine now. (her voice trailing off) Just at the time it was different. (her voice back to normal) But people still watch me searching for any sign that Im going to crack. Its like once youre crazy youre always crazy.
Daniel: (with a shrug) I figured you had to be crazy to like me.
Andie laughs lightly. There is a silence.
Andie: (quietly) I still like you Daniel. This doesnt change my mind about you.
Daniel runs his hand up her neck. He rests his palm on her cheek, and caresses her cheek with his thumb.
Daniel: Thank you.
Andie: (nervously) Do you...
Daniel: (cutting her off in a whisper) Yes.
Daniel leans in and kisses her.
Int. McPhee House (Day 5)
Jack is sitting in his room typing on a laptop. The door is open and Jen walks in. Jack looks up.
Jen: (hands on her hips) I called you last night.
Jack: (trying to hide his smile) I was out.
Jen: (smiling) I called this morning too, and Andie said you never came home.
Jack: I dont think I like what you are implying.
Jen: (walking over to Jack) You better spill. (Jack shakes his head no; in a threatening tone) I have ways to make you talk.
Jack: (cocking his eyebrow) Oh really?
Jen: (standing right next to him) Uh huh.
Jack: My lips are sealed.
Jen: And last night were they sealed too?
Jack: I cant believe you just said that.
Jen: Come on Jack. After all it was my advice that surely led to you being out all night.
Jack: Im not telling.
Jen: (eyes narrowing) Youre going to make me resort to torture methods arent you?
Jack: What youre going to tie me to the rack?
Jen: Nope. (with an evil smile) I have better ways.
Jen starts tickling Jack. Jack starts laughing, and falls out of the chair. Jen keeps tickling him as he lies on the floor gasping, and laughing.
Jack: Stop.
Jen: Not till you tell me.
Jack: Okay Okay. Just stop.
Jen stops tickling Jack, and lies down next to him.
Jack: I told him I loved him.
Jen: And?
Jack: And we talked all night till about sunrise, and then fell asleep on the couch.
Jen: (turning her head) So am I to gather from this that you are not a single man?
Jack: That would be accurate.
Jen: Im so happy for you Jack.
Jack: Yeah well itll still be hard.
Jen: It always is, but at least youre still together.
Jack: We are.
Jen stands up.
Jack: (looking up at her) Youre leaving? (Jen nods) You just came over here to torture me.
Jen: I came to see if you were okay. I was worried.
Jack: (sitting up) Thanks.
Jen: (nods) But now I have to go cause I promised Grams I would help her bake this afternoon. How much help I will be is still in question.
Jack: (laughing) Tell Grams I said hi.
Jen: I will.
Jen walks out of the room, and Jack lies back down on the floor with a smile on his face.
Int. Dougs Apartment (Day 5)
Pacey is sitting on the couch a textbook setting on his lap. Hes not really reading it just sort of staring at it. Doug is sitting in a chair across from Pacey reading a magazine. Doug looks up.
Doug: Hows the studying going?
Pacey: (not looking up) Good.
Doug: You havent turned the page in over 10 minutes.
Pacey doesnt look up. He turns the page. Doug chuckles.
Doug: Go talk to her Pace.
Pacey: (shaking his head) Nope.
Doug: And why not?
Pacey: Got better things to do.
Doug: Sure you do little brother.
Pacey: (slamming the book shut) Look Doug, I know youre just trying to help, but I really would prefer not to talk about Joey right now.
Theres a knock on the door.
Doug: (standing up) Hopefully thats better company than your sullen self.
Pacey rolls his eyes, as Doug walks to the door, and looks out the peephole.
Doug: Well you may not want to talk to about Joey, but do you want to talk to Joey?
Pacey: (surprised he stands up) What?
Doug: (opening the door) Hey Joey.
Joey: Hey Doug. Is Pacey here?
Doug: (looking back to Pacey who is walking towards the door) Yeah.
Doug opens the door wider, and backs away as Joey steps in. Pacey is now by the door.
Joey: Hey Pacey.
Pacey: Jo.
There is silence as the just sort of look at each other trying to figure out what the other is thinking.
Doug: (clearing his throat) I think I need to ummm...(pause) Theres probably a cat up a tree somewhere. I should go take care of that.
Joey: (looking at Doug) Doesnt the fire department usually do that?
Doug: I was trying to be subtle, but Ill just leave you two alone.
Doug leaves the apartment shutting the door behind him. Joey looks down as Pacey watches her.
Pacey: So whats on your mind Jo?
Joey: (looking up) Can we sit down?
Pacey: Yeah. (walking towards the couch he looks over his shoulder) Did you want something to drink?
Joey: (following Pacey) No, Im fine.
Pacey: Okay.
Pacey sits back down on the couch, and Joey pauses before sitting down next to him, but not really that close to him. Pacey watches her, as she plays nervously with her bracelet. Finally, Joey turns to him.
Joey: I dont know where to start.
Pacey: How about with why youve been avoiding me for over a week?
Joey: I had to process it all. I needed time to think.
Pacey: About what? Me not going to college doesnt change anything between us.
Joey: Yes it does Pacey.
Pacey: What does it change Jo? How you feel about me?
Joey: (grabbing his hand, and shaking her head) No of course not. Nothing could ever change that Pacey. (she pauses and moves closer to Pacey on the couch) I panicked. I had this vision of our future. We would go off to college together, and just have this perfect existence. I know thats not fair, or realistic, but its what I dreamed about. So when you told me you werent going to college that dream I had just shattered, and the future didnt seem so bright anymore.
Pacey: (cutting her off) Jo, (he reaches over and cradles her face in his hands) it doesnt matter where you go. Im always going to be there.
Joey: I never doubted you, Pacey. I doubted myself.
Pacey: What?
Joey: (pulling away from him) I couldnt help but think I let you down. That I didnt encourage you. That I wasnt good for you. That maybe if you werent with me...
Pacey: Jo (forcing her to look at him) dont talk like that.
Joey: Pacey...
Pacey: (cutting her off) No just dont. You make my life better. Thats the end of the story. Me not going to college has nothing to do with you.
Joey: I just feel like the decision I make isnt going to be which college I go to, but a choice between you, and college. (getting choked up) And I cant make that choice.
Pacey: You dont have to Jo. You could go to school in Istanbul, and Id follow you there.
Joey: (slight smile) Istanbul huh?
Pacey: (nodding) Yeah. What do they speak in Istanbul?? Istabulese??
Joey laughs lightly before turning serious.
Joey: Im so sorry Pace.
Pacey: (smoothing her hair) Shhh, its okay.
Joey: I thought youd be mad.
Pacey: Well to be honest I was a little mad.
Joey: A little??
Pacey: Okay I was fuming mad, (pausing as his voice gets lower) but I can never stay mad at you for long.
Joey: I am sorry Pacey, for not understanding, for getting mad, for shutting you out, for not listening to you...
Pacey: (cutting her off by placing his finger to her lips) No more apologies.
Joey: We should talk about this.
Pacey: Later okay?
Joey nods, and Pacey leans in and kisses her.
Fade out...
