It was the fourth of July and best friends Dawson Leary, Joey Potter, and Pacey Witter had taken Dawsons dads boat out for a cruise on the creek. They had stopped out in the middle of the creek in the deep water, and where watching the fireworks burst in the night sky.

Its so beautiful, Joey commented.

Joey was sitting leaning back on her elbows as she watched the annual fireworks display. Pacey was sitting next to her with Dawson sitting across from them.

This is my favorite part of this holiday, Dawson commented.

Ive always been partial to the food, Pacey added.

Joey gave him a look, and remarked, Pig

Dawson stood up quickly, and said, I brought sparklers.

He was trying to squelch any Pacey and Joey bickering before it started. It made him uneasy when they fought. They would go at each other, and the rest of the world seemed to disappear as they got caught up in their own little banter fest.

Dawson pushed his greasy hair out of his face, and bent down to dig in his bag. He produced a handful of sparklers, and a lighter. He handed them out silently to his friends.

Didnt we play with sparklers when we were like eight, Pacey asked.

Joey rolled her eyes, You should enjoy this then considering your brain hasnt matured beyond that.

Pacey put his hand to his chest, and over dramatically declared, You wound me Josephine.

Joey turned to Pacey and glared at him. Bite me Pacey.

Dawson cut in, I dont think you ever outgrow sparklers.

Dawson pulled out his lighter and lit the sparkler in his hand. It ignited and it started crackling as the white sparks shot off of it in all directions. He tossed the lighter to Pacey, and turned his attention back to the fireworks overhead.

Pacey caught it and groaned as he lit his own sparkler. It came to life, and Pacey turned to Joey. The sparkling white light of his own sparkler seemed to dance around Joeys face. Pacey watched the effect as he was overcome by how beautiful Joey was.

What? Joey asked self-consciously. Pacey didnt say anything, and Joey glared at him. Just light the damn sparkler, she demanded in annoyance.

Pacey snapped out of his trance and flicked the lighter on. The flame jumped to life, and he moved to light her sparkler. Her sparkler quickly ignited, and started shooting white sparks. Together their two sparklers created an almost magical connection surrounding them. They stared at each other as their sparklers continued to burn, but the real sparks were happening between them. It was in their eyes, and they both sensed that something else had been ignited that night besides sparklers.

Pacey unconsciously licked his lips as he stared at Joey. She instinctively lifted her hand to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, but Pacey caught her hand in his. She stared down at their joined hands in overwhelming confusion. Pacey dropped her hand, and tucked the loose strand of hair behind her ear. Joey looked up at him with a mix of emotions on her face. Pacey didnt move his hand from the side of her face and idly caressed her cheek with his thumb.

Pacey, Joey breathed so low it was barely audible, but Pacey heard it.

Pacey leaned forward slowly, and Joey did the same. They met half way their lips gently touching. As their lips touched gently, Dawson turned around suspicious as to why they were so quiet all of a sudden. He watched as their lips hesitantly met.

What the hell is going on? Dawson shouted. Joey and Pacey jumped away from each other. What are you doing? Dawson demanded.

Joey jumped up quickly. Nothing Dawson, Joey stammered embarrassed to be caught kissing Pacey.

It didnt look like nothing, Dawson said coolly as he pushed his greasy hair out of his face.

It was nothing D man. We got distracted by the pretty lights, Pacey explained waving his sparkler in the air sending white sparks flying everywhere.

Youre my best friend Pace, how could you? Dawson demanded getting choked up.

Dawson it was nothing, Joey insisted waving her hands causing her own sparkler to send white sparks flying about the night air.

Nothing? Dawson said with skepticism.

Yes nothing, Joey reiterated as she walked closer to Dawson. It was the mood and the fireworks, and these damn sparklers, Joey said waving the sparkler in the air frantically. I mean I would never kiss Pacey in a rational state of mind.

Dawson sighs in relief.

Gee thanks Jo that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, Pacey scoffed.

Joey turned to Pacey. Oh and like you would kiss me if not effected by these damn sparklers, Joey argued.

She tossed her sparkler over her head. It flew over Dawsons head shooting sparks and landed in the water.

Maybe I would, he argued defensively.

Joey was taken aback, and quietly asked, You would?

Maybe is that so bad. I mean is kissing me so bad.

Joey didnt have time to answer as Dawson screamed behind her. Joey whipped around, and her jaw feel open in shock.

Jesus Dawson your hairs on fire, Pacey exclaimed.

Put it out, Dawson screamed.

Pacey pushed past Joey, and on impulsive shoved Dawson off the boat. He fell into the water with a huge splash. Joey and Pacey hurried to the edge of the boat waiting for him to reappear. The water was still.

Oh my God Pacey, do something. Hes going to drown, Joey screamed.

Pacey quickly kicked off his shoes and dove into the water. He thrashed around searching for Dawson in the black murky water as Joey stood on the boat tears coursing down her face.

Pacey reemerged without Dawson, and shouted to Joey, I cant find him. Call for help.

Pacey dove back under the water as Joey scrambled to the radio. She frantically called for help. She ran back to the side of the boat.

Pacey, she screamed as she saw no sign of either of them. Pacey resurfaced. Where is he? Joey cried.

I cant find him, he screamed back before diving back under.

Time Lapse - Back on Land.

Pacey stood on the dock wrapped in a blanket shivering. Joey walked over to him, and put her arm around him.

You did the best you could, she said quietly.

They were silent for a while. Finally Pacey turned to Joey. Wanna go make out? he asked.

Joey thinks about it for a moment and shrugs. Sure.

The Moral of the Story - Water does not put out grease fires.
