Jerry Na-who? No longer. Jerry Nadeau achieved the unthinkable (at least in my mind). One, he won a race - period. I don't think many people really thought this was possible. Two, he won it with the 25 Hendrick team which hasn't been the same since Tim Richmond died and has been the distant 3rd Hendrick team ever since Jeff Gordon came onto the scene in 1993. Three, he won it with a lame duck, "dot com" sponsor. Based on the poor stock market performance for the "dot com" sector, this is about the only good news for an internet company in 2000. Four, he easily beat Dale Earnhardt - an Atlanta master - and several other veteran drivers to the line for the win. You gotta wonder if Terry Labonte is all of a sudden saying "Rick? Mr. Hendrick? Remember me? I drive the car with the rooster on it - you know, one of yours? Did I ever tell you about the time I won 2 championships? Did you know I'm related to this year's champ?" Once the race was announced as a rain out, ESPN aired the 1992 Hooters 500. I was immediately struck by the date of the race and how things have changed since then. I was sitting on the backstretch of the true oval that November day (before it became the front stretch of the current quad-oval). |

What a finish
to BR2K Season 3!!! Last week, only 39 points
separated the top 5. This week turned into a one-lap,
Talladega shootout. Scooter held on to the top spot for
so many weeks, but he got shuffled out of the lead draft
and finished 4th. GoGordon jumped from 3rd to win the
championship, and he brought Dixie along with him to
finish 2nd. Good finish for Dixie who is losing a
favorite from the past (DW) but has latched on to a solid
driver for the future (Special K - Matt Kenseth).
Honorable mention goes to Rockdoc who pulled a 1326 week
to jump +6 spots in the final standings (from 29th to
23rd). |

Congratulations to Bobby

Finally...
Thanks to DW for a great career. I never pulled for
Darrell when he ran Saturday night late models at
Nashville Speedway or when he got into Winston Cup -
particularly when he was challenging The King for NASCAR
supremacy in the late 70s. But in his prime, he was a
fierce competitor, and his hall of fame numbers speak for
themselves - 84 wins, 3 championships (plus a 2nd place
just -11 behind The King in 1979), Daytona 500 winner,
incredible short track prowess at Bristol, Wilkesboro,
Nashville, Richmond, and Martinsville. Over time, I began
to respect DW for what he had accomplished (although I
still never pulled for him! LOL). Darrell was always full of himself. But several years ago, he became filled with something else - the Holy Spirit. Just as he changed the way the media viewed racing as a legitimate sport, he also made an immeasurable positive impact on so many lives - drivers, crews, and fans - with his testimony about how he tries to live his life as best he can accordingly to the example set by our Lord Jesus Christ. |
