King's Quest:
Quest for the Crown
Walkthrough
Note: This walkthrough
gives a complete description of how to finish the game with the maximal
score possible. Still, there are more things do discover in the game than
you will get by following this walkthrough. The most interesting alternate
solutions to problems encountered in the game are therefore presented here
as well. Don't consult this walkthrough immediately when you get stuck
in the game. At least read my General Adventure
Gaming Tips first and try out some of the things suggested there. It's
never as rewarding to finish an adventure game if you've had to use a walkthrough
to do it!
Introduction
When the game
starts, you’re standing to the east of the castle of Daventry. Walk to
the left, crossing the bridge over the moat. Walk up to the castle doors.open
doors. Walk up
and left through the hallway into the throne room where King Edward the
Benevolent sits. Walk up to the stairs. bow.
talk
to king. Now you
know your quest. Exit the castle and walk off the screen to the left.
Map of Daventry
The Magic Mirror
You are now at
a location with a number of birch trees and a big, gray rock on the ground.
Walk up behind the rock. push
rock. The rock
rolls downwards and reveals a hole underneath it. look
hole. You’ve found
a dagger! get
dagger. Now walk
one screen up. You see a large tree. Walk up to the base of the tree. climb
tree. You’re now
standing on a huge branch of the tree. There’s a bird’s nest at the end
of the branch with something inside. Walk up to the nest (careful not to
fall off the branch). look
nest. It’s a pure
golden egg! get
egg. Walk back
to the base of the branch. You’ll climb down from the tree automatically.
Now walk up and you’ll see a cliff with a door in it. The door is locked,
so you can’t enter it right now. Instead, walk up one more screen. There’s
a walnut tree here. Many walnuts have fallen to the ground. get
walnut. You now
have something that looks like a regular walnut. But if you open
walnut, you’ll
discover that it’s pure gold inside. Now, walk one screen to the left.
You’ll have to watch out here. There’s an ogre and a wizard in this area
that may appear, and they’re not up for anything good. If you see one of
them, quickly walk off the screen in any direction to avoid getting caught.
Walking near the bottom edge of the screen is a good idea, since that allows
you to escape quickly. Then, return to the previous area and they’ll be
gone. Walk off the left edge of the screen and you’ll come to a gingerbread
house. look
house. You know
who lives in gingerbread houses, don’t you? Nevertheless, walk up to the
house and eat
house. Yikes!
Now open
door and enter
the house. If the witch is inside, you’ll better run out again quickly,
or she’ll get you! If this happens, re-enter the house again and again
until she’s not there. You wouldn’t want to stay for long though as she’s
bound to return soon. Walk up to the cabinet at the north wall and open
cabinet. There’s
a delicious-looking Swiss cheese inside. get
cheese. close
cabinet. Now,
quickly walk into her bedroom at the right. She cannot see you here if
she returns home. There’s a note lying on the table beside the bed. get
note. read
note. ”Sometimes
it is wise to think backwards.” Hmm, what does that mean? Wait inside
the bedroom until the witch returns home (if she haven’t already). She’ll
be standing next to her oven with her back turned to you, getting it ready
to cook someone. This is your chance! Carefully walk up behind her and
push
witch. She’ll
fall right into the oven and die. That’s what happens if you steal the
Magic Chest of Daventry! But she didn’t hide the chest in her house, so
you’ll have to search elsewhere for it. Exit the gingerbread house and
walk two screens down. You’re now standing next to an old well. Hmm, you’ll
better check it out more closely. Walk up to the well and enter
bucket. Your weight
will cause it to descend into the well, with you in it. When you’re at
the bottom of the well, jump
into water. swim,
or you’ll drown. The bucket could be useful, so cut
rope with dagger.
You now have the bucket. dive.
Hmm, there’s an underwater cave here. Swim down and through the hole to
the left. And don’t stay under the water for too long. Graham can’t hold
his breath forever! You’re now out of the water and you’ve found the hiding
place of the Magic Mirror! But the evil wizard that stole it has put a
ferocious, fire-breathing dragon here to guard it. Don’t walk too close
to him or you’ll get killed by the fire! You might try to throw
dagger at dragon,
thus killing him, but a smarter thing to do is to use the bucket from the
well. It’s been filled with water because of your dive. throw
water at dragon.
With his fire extinguished, he’ll move the huge block of granite at the
left side of the cavern, revealing an opening, and leave through it. Now,
walk back through the right hole into the water and then immediately return
to the cave for four extra points. (You're obviously rewarded for going
back the same way you came, but it's not the fastest way and by doing this
you'll get the points anyway.)
So, now all
you need to do is to walk up to the Magic Mirror and get
mirror. That wasn’t
so hard, was it? Now walk through the opening that the dragon revealed
and continue through the cave behind it. You’re out in the sun again, carrying
the Magic Mirror!

Cave
The Chest of Gold
Walk one screen
left and then one screen up. You’ll see a stream. Walk one screen left
and you’ll see a bridge crossing the stream. Walk up onto the bridge. A
wretched troll appears and blocks your way. talk
to troll. He wants
a treasure if he’s going to let you pass. Well, you could give him the
golden egg or walnut, but there’s a smarter way of getting past him. Walk
down one screen instead. You’ll arrive at a patch of clover. See the four-leaf
clover? Walk up to it and get
clover. There
seems to be some mysterious strength to it. Now walk back up to the bridge,
then off the screen to the left and finally one more screen to the left.
There’s a ceramic bowl lying on the ground here. get
bowl and then
walk one screen up. At the edge of the river there are some pebbles, worn
smooth by the river. get
pebbles. Now walk
back down again and then down one more screen. Wait here until a cute little
elf arrives. If you have to wait very long for him, try exiting the screen
and return again a few times. When you see the elf, walk up close to him
and talk
to elf. He’ll
be impressed by your kindness and give you a magical ring that can make
you invisible, but only once and for a short time. Now walk down one screen
and you’ll end up at a big carrot patch just north of the castle. Walk
up onto the patch and get
carrot. Then walk
one screen to the right and one more screen to the right to get out of
the carrot patch. Continue walking right. Your fairy godmother may appear
here and give you a protective spell that works for a short time. When
you walk off the right edge of the fairy screen, you’ll see one end of
a goat pen with a goat inside. Walk another screen to the right and you’ll
see the gate to the pen. open
gate and walk
inside. Walk up to the goat and show
carrot to goat.
He’ll start following you. Just make sure you don’t give him the carrot
now. He’ll eat it and then wander off if you do. Now walk out of the goat
pen, one screen up, one screen to the left, one screen up and then one
screen to the left again with the goat following you. You should now be
back at the troll bridge. Walk up to the bridge. You probably know what
goats thinks of trolls, don’t you? The goat will butt the troll right off
the bridge, never to be seen again. Then the goat wanders off the screen.
Walk over the bridge. You’re now on a small island between two raging rivers.
In the middle of the island there’s a gnome. talk
to gnome. He’ll
challenge you to a contest: You must guess his name correctly in three
guesses. Well, if you’re really good at fairy-tales you’ll know of a gnome
named Rumplestiltskin. But that would be too easy, wouldn’t it? No, remember
the note you got from the witch’s house: ”Sometimes it is wise to think
backwards.” Hmm, could it be Rumplestiltskin spelled backwards? Nikstlitselpmur?
No, that would be far too easy for a seasoned adventurer like you, right?
No, try instead to rearrange the alphabet so that A becomes Z, B becomes
Y and so forth. Then replace the letters in Rumplestiltskin with the corresponding
letters in your new alphabet. That becomes Ifnkovhgroghprm.
Make that your first guess. Wow, you’re right! Unbelievable! The gnome
leaves a few magic beans on the ground as a reward and leaves. get
beans. Walk off
the screen to the right and pass another bridge. Continue walking right.
You’ll arrive at an area with wild flowers growing in some very fertile
soil. This might be a good place to plant your magic beans! plant
beans. Wow! A
mighty beanstalk quickly grows up before your eyes, stretching to the sky.
Walk up to the beanstalk and climb
beanstalk. Start
climbing upwards. This is a difficult part of the game, so save your game
before you attempt to go any further and be prepared to save and restore
your game many times while climbing this beanstalk. Continue climbing upwards,
attempting not to fall to your death on the ground below. When you finally
reach the top, you are in the Land of the Clouds. There’s rumors that a
giant lives up here. This might have been a good place for the witch to
hide the Chest of Gold! Walk two screens to the right, one screen down
and then two more screens to the right. There’s a hole in the base of a
tree here. Walk up to the tree and look
into hole. You’ve
found a sling! get
sling. Now walk
back two screens to the left, then one screen up. Walk up to the upper
right edge of the screen, just where the clouds begin. If you walk too
far you'll fall down from the Land of the Clouds, so be careful! Now walk
one screen to the right. You'll see a giant carrying the Chest of Gold.
And he’s coming right at you! Quickly walk behind the left tree in the
background and hide there. The giant won't be able to catch you if you
keep standing behind that tree. Now, you could try to use
sling, shooting
the giant right between the eyes with one of your pebbles and killing him.
But instead, just wait patiently behind the tree. Unable to catch you,
the giant will eventually become tired and fall asleep. It can take quite
some time, so increase the speed of the game if you’re impatient. After
he’s fallen asleep you can just walk up to him and get
chest. That’s
the second lost treasure of Daventry in your possession! Now walk off the
screen to the right. There’s a cave opening here. Go through it to enter
the mountain and you’ll see a long staircase leading down. Walk down the
stairs, careful not to fall off the edge. The stairs continues at the next
few screens, so just keep walking. When you finally reach the base of the
mountain, just walk off the bottom of the screen and you’ll come out through
the locked door you saw before. If you’d rather like to climb down the
beanstalk you could do that instead, but taking the stairs is safer. (Note:
There’s an alternate way of getting the Chest of Gold if you fail to guess
the gnome’s name: He’ll leave a gold key instead of the beans and with
this key you can unlock the door to the stairs leading up to the Land of
the Clouds. This solution gives you less points though, and you’ll have
to be prepared to lose one of your treasures to a dwarf while climbing
the stairs.)

of the Clouds
The Magical Shield
Now there’s just
one more stolen treasure to find, but there’s still a few more things to
do in Daventry: First, walk down two screens to the place where you found
the dagger. From there, walk one screen left and one screen down. Now you’re
at one end of an old cottage in great need of repair. Walk one screen left
to reach its entrance. (If you climbed down the beanstalk you only need
to go one screen up and one screen to the right to reach the same place.)
Enter the cottage. Inside lives a poor, starving woodcutter and his wife.
talk
to man and talk
to woman. They
sure look like they could use a good meal. Remember the bowl you found
before? look
bowl. It has something
written inside it: Fill. give
bowl to man and
then say
fill. It will
be magically filled with a delicious looking stew. That’s exactly what
these poor, hungry people needed! The woodcutter will thank you by offering
you his fiddle in return. Walk up to the fiddle (careful not to fall through
one of the holes in the floor) and get
fiddle. Exit their
house, walk one screen to the left and then one screen up. There’s an old,
rotted log and a hollow stump here. Walk up to the stump and look
inside stump.
You’ve found a small leather pouch! get
pouch and open
pouch. Wow, it’s
full of diamonds! Next, walk one screen up and continue up past the now
empty goat pen. You’ll arrive at the entrance to the cave where you found
the Magic Mirror again. A big, friendly-looking condor will appear here
if you wait for a short time. Walk to one of the spots where he descends
to near the ground and when he comes there: jump.
This can be a little hard, but if you manage to time it correctly you’ll
grab on to his feet and get carried up into the sky. (Hint: Don't stand
in the bottom part of the screen. It's much harder to time your jumps from
there.) After a short flight he’ll drop you on an island that you can’t
reach in any other way. There’s a hole here. It would be stupid to just
drop down the hole without exploring the surroundings first, so walk one
screen to the left. You can see the castle of Daventry far away in the
north. There’s a fat mushroom growing here. get
mushroom. Now
go back to the hole and walk right into it. You’ll fall down onto a hard
cave floor below, but without breaking any bones. When you’ve recovered
from the fall, walk down and then left through the underground tunnel you’ve
discovered. You’ll come upon a door guarded by a big rat. talk
to rat. He wants
a treasure, just like the troll. Well, you’re carrying a lot of valuable
things. But for a rat, the cheese you found inside the gingerbread house
before is good enough. Walk as close as you can to the rat without getting
killed and give
cheese to rat.
He’ll go away. open
door. There are
two leprechauns there. The four-leaf clover that you're carrying prevents
them from harming you. Walk one screen down, and you’ll see the throne
room of the Leprechaun King. It is full of leprechauns, and lo and behold:
The Magical Shield sits right beside the throne of the Leprechaun King!
Now return up to the other room. As leprechauns love music you should play
fiddle. They’ll
all dance away. Even the Leprechaun King himself will leave, forgetting
his sceptre in the throne room. Walk up to the empty stone throne, get
shield and get
sceptre. Now walk
up the stairs to the left. Oh no, you’re stuck! There’s only a tiny hole
leading out of this cave and you’re too big to pass through it. But don’t
worry! eat
mushroom and you’re
magically shrinked into a tiny man. Now you’re small enough to pass through
the hole. Once you’re outside, the magic of the mushroom will wear off
and you’ll return to your regular size again. Wow! Now you got all of the
Three Treasures of Daventry! No time to waste: Go back to the castle. It’s
not far away: Just walk two screens up and two screens to the right and
you’re there! open
doors. Walk up
to the throne room where King Edward awaits you and bow.
As the king rises to greet you, he feels a terrible pain in the chest,
falls down to the floor and dies. But he does so knowing that Daventry
is saved. You, Sir Graham is now King of Daventry. Congratulations, you’ve
finished King’s Quest: Quest for the Crown! And if you look at your
score, you'll notice something funny...

Alternate solutions
The magical ring
you got from the elf that can make you invisible can protect you from many
enemies in the game, including the giant. But you lose points if you use
it. To become invisible: wear
ring and then
rub
ring. And don't
swim anywhere while wearing the ring. It will slip off your finger and
you can never get it back.
The protective
spell from your fairy godmother also protects you from many enemies, but
you only get it once and it works for only a limited amount of time, so
use it wisely.
You can actually
recover the Three Treasuers in any order. If you've found the magic shield
before you go up to the Land of the Clouds, it will protect you from the
giant and he'll be unable to harm you.
There are
many ways to go down the well. If the rope is lowered into the well, you
can climb the rope instead of entering the bucket to go down. The rope
can be cut and the bucket automatically obtained before or after you've
entered the well. Just don't cut the rope if you're standing beside the
well and the rope is lowered into it, because you'd never be able to get
down the well then. The bucket can be filled with water from many places
in the game, even while swimming.
Before you've
killed the witch: Watch out if you're walking in the areas near her house.
She may swoop down from the sky and catch you!
