King's Quest: Quest for the Crown
Introduction

King's Quest: Quest for the Crown takes place a long, long time ago in the kingdom of Daventry, a fairy tale land filled with magic and legendary creatures.

In this kingdom King Edward the Benevolent and his lovely queen ruled. Daventry was a peaceful, prosperous and happy kingdom. This was ensured through its three great treasures:

There was only one problem: The king and queen were childless, making them very unhappy. Who would inherit the throne when they were gone?

One day a sorcerer came to the castle of Daventry, telling the king and queen that he could cast a magic spell that would bring them a child. In return he wanted the Magic Mirror. It was a very big thing to ask for. At first hesitating, the king and queen looked into the Magic Mirror and saw a vision of a young princely figure. Imagining this to be their future son, they gave the mirror away to the sorcerer, who took it away to his dwelling and set one of his beasts to guard it. After months of waiting, the king and queen realized that the sorcerer had fooled them, and no child was conceived. Without the mirror to tell the weather, the harvest was lost and famine struck Daventry for the first time in many hundred years. The dreaded Plague came to Daventry, and the queen was soon stricken with it.

After four days of illness, a dwarf arrived at the castle and claimed to have a cure for the queen; a powerful root that could cure any plague. Just a touch to the queen's lips of this root made her feel better, and the king asked the dwarf what he wanted in return for it. He wanted nothing less than the Magic Shield. The king hesitated for a while, but then decided the queen's health was clearly worth it, and the Magic Shield was given away to the dwarf in return for the root. The queen was given the whole root, but it didn't make her recover, and soon thereafter she died. The dwarf was nowhere to find. The news of the loss of the Magic Shield led armies to attack the weakened Daventry.

After many unhappy years, while out riding in the forest, the king came upon a beautiful young woman, tied to a tree and being attacked by wolves. He saved her and she told him that she was Princess Dahlia of Cumberland. The king fell in love with her and later asked her to marry him. She accepted. With the void left behind by the old queen filled and the chance of now getting an heir to the throne after all, the people of Daventry were very excited. But on the night before the wedding, the princess stole King Edward's keys to the castle treasury and took the Chest of Gold from there. The castle treasurer witnessed how the princess, holding the chest, changed shape to that of an old and ugly witch and flew out of an open window on her broom, taking the chest with her.

With the third and final great treasure of Daventry stolen, it grew poor and weak. Many years passed and King Edward felt that his end was near. Fearing for the future of Daventry, he then called his favorite knight, Sir Graham to the castle…
