Character Applied for: Marcus Flint Description of Character's Personality: In a word, unpleasant. Marcus has the classic pureblood Slytherin mindset - Muggles aren't really human, Muggleborn wizards are possibly even worse, and pureblood wizards who don't agree are traitors. He's not a Death Eater at this point, but he's very sympathetic to their cause. Marcus played Quidditch at school, and enjoyed it, but the sport isn't that important to him. His real interest in the Slytherin Quidditch team was in *winning*, not the sport itself. If the popular sport/activity at Hogwarts had been wizard chess, he'd have joined the chess team. He isn't actually *stupid*, but he was a poor student. The cancellation of exams (and presumable rescheduling of the NEWTs) his seventh year tripped him up, and he didn't actually manage to get any NEWTs; thus he returned for an eighth year. His intelligence is more common-sense/street-smarts and Slytherin cunning. It may seem a bit ironic that Marcus excelled in Defense Against the Dark Arts at school, but he's always been very good at the Dark Arts, and being able to counter the curses he learns, whenever possible, is second nature to him. He is very talented with curses, but in all other areas of magic is merely average, at best, and is utterly incompetent at Transfiguration. Marcus has an extremely juvenile sense of humor, as seen by his enjoyment of the fake Dementor stunt in PoA, and he hasn't grown out of that. No one, not even those closest to him, are exempt from his insults - though if you're genuinely close to him, they're less vicious. He despises Muggles, Muggle-born wizards, Muggle-friendly wizards, Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws, and more than a few Slytherins. In fact, if you aren't on his very short list of people he genuinely cares about (which you aren't, unless you're Adrian Pucey), it's really best to just avoid him. Important Backstory, if any: Marcus's father was a Death Eater who claimed to have been under the Imperius Curse to avoid Azkaban. His father died shortly after the events at the end of Goblet of Fire, of natural causes; his mother runs a mail-order curse business which she advertises in Witch Weekly and the Quibbler. Marcus is the first member of his family to stay at Hogwarts past the OWLs; he's absolutely determined to rise above what's expected of his family, which is an old, but not at all prominent, pureblood family. He gets along with his mother well enough, but isn't extremely close to her. Shortly after leaving school, he was hired as an assistant to a wizard who had been one of Grindelwald's inner circle in the forties, and has been in Yorkshire much of the time since then. It was his Defense Against the Dark Arts NEWT score that got him this position; while he's supposedly learning advanced Defense, he's really honing his Dark Arts skills. His apprenticeship/training is almost at an end, however, and he's starting to look around at his options. Sample Journal Entry: Yorkshire is the fucking armpit of Britain, and if I couldn't Apparate down to London to actually visit civilization from time to time, I'd have gone mad by now. Old Bletchley (Miles's great-uncle, or great-great-uncle, or something - hell, he could be his grandmother for all I know. Bugger it, I don't even keep up with my own family that closely) is all right, for a senile old git, but there's only so much I can hear about how much better off we'd be now if Grindelwald had won. My *parents* weren't even born when Grindelwald was killed - who cares now? Still, I should count myself lucky that I did well enough on my Defense Against the Dark Arts NEWT that he took me on - he only occasionally does advanced training. It's just hard to remember when I think I could be somewhere *interesting*.
