   Note: Usa-se a preposição to após os verbos: to go/ to move/ to return/ to walk.

More important Prepositions

About – sobre, aproximadamente.

Ex.: We are talking about politics. I left at about 6 o’clock.

Above – acima de, superior a, mais de.

Ex.: Imagine above us only sky. There were above 50 people  

at the lecture.

Bellow – abaixo de. Ex. The temperature is bellow zero.

Along – ao longo de; por. Ex. She’s walking along the street now.

After – depois de; atrás de; após (tempo).

Ex.: I’ll meet him after lunch. The dog runs after the cat.

Before – antes de (tempo); diante de(lugar).

Ex.: Peter was brought before the judge. I have to clean  my house

before dinner.

Across – do outro lado de; de um lado a outro). Ex. They live across

The street. A dog ran across the street.

Beside - ao lado de. Ex. The school is beside the market.

 

Besides - além de. Ex.We study English besides Portuguese.

 

For – para; por (com o objetivo de; duração de algo).  Ex. We’ll

wait for you. He runs for president. Bake the cake for 50 minutes.

Upon–sobre (proximidade de tempo) Ex.  Xmas is almost upon us.

By - perto de,; junto a. Ex. We sat by the river.

    - de, por(indicando autoria) Ex.This book was written by Dickens.

    - de (meio de transporte) Ex. We went to school by bus.

Of – de (posse) Ex. This book is of Peter.

Off – de (indica afastamento, desligamento) Ex. Turn off the radio.

From –de (origem) Ex. She comes from New York City.

Until – Till – até (tempo). Ex. I’ll wait until / till 4 o’clock.

With – com. Ex. She went to school with her sister.

Without – sem. Ex. Lonely is the night when I am without you.

Beyond – além de; em adição a.Ex. Beyond the door there’s peace.

But – exceto. Ex. Nobody but you can solve this problem.

Over – acima, sobre, mais de. Ex. Over sixty people were present.

The picture is over the fireplace.

Within – dentro de. Ex. The bus will come within an hour.

 

Towards – em direção a.Ex. He walks towards the front door.

Like – como (semelhante). Ex. Your house is just like mine.

Despite – apesar de, não obstante. Ex. We went shopping despite

the bad weather.

Down – para baixo (movimento). Ex.  We climbed down the hill.

Up – para cima. Ex. He climbed up the hills.

Under – embaixo de Ex. The ball rolled under the table.

Through – através de. Ex. She walked through the park.

Between – entre (dois ou três pessoas ou objetos)

Ex. She sat between Mary and Jane.

Into – para dentro de algo, profissões, contato, transformação. Exs. 

He fell into the river. I want to go into teaching. The car crashed into

a tree. Break the chocolate into pieces./Heat changes ice into water.

Against – contra, oposição. Ex. This book is against Darwin.

Outside – do lado de fora Ex. The dog is outside the house.

Inside – do lado de dentro. Ex. Mary is inside the house.

Since –desde (momento que algo veio a acontecer)

 Ex. I’ve been here since 5 o’clock.

During – durante. (no decorrer de um período ou evento) .  

Ex. I don’t have time during the week.
