The second city of my trip to Europe was Berlin, Germany. This was my first time here. Berlin is such a huge, sprawling city. The city is still rebuilding itself, either renovating the old and historical buildings, or creating new modern ones. At times it reminded me of Vancouver, lots of new immigrants settling in to start new lives, lots of construction everywhere with cranes part of the city outline, as well as pockets of squalid areas where you a very nervous to walk through during the day, nevermind at night. We met some of the nicest and most helpful people in our whole trip, as well as the most rudest. Spending two nights in the city just only gave us a glimpse of what it had to offer. Most of the attractions are spread throughout the city, rather than just centrally, so you definitely need to travel a lot to view everything. Fortunately, they have a really great public transportation system. We visited the most popular sights: the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, walked along the Unter Den Linden, visited the museums at Museum Insel and saw Nefertiti, shopped at Europe's largest department store, KaDeWe, etc. I will come back one day and spend a lot more time exploring and getting to know the rest of Berlin. |
