The city of Queenstown, New Zealand is 1020 feet above sea level,
and is near the shores of Lake Wakatipu, in the Southern Alps of New
Zealand's South Island. Lake Wakatipu was said to be formed by a giant
falling into the ground, according an old Maori legend, but actually
an ice age surrounding the area formed the land. The Maori, the people
considered native to the area, settled looking for food and other
necessities, but only when the climate was favoriable. These
expiditions continued until about 1860, which was when the British
permenantly settled looking for gold and farmland. Queenstown is
considered one of the top 10 best vacation spots in several travel
magazines.
