 Housing Options

Sometimes a person will be clear about the type of accommodation they require (for instance, public housing). Others may not be familiar with the range of housing options available to them. Workers can explore alternative housing options available in the community such as:

private rental

community housing

"share" housing options

home ownership

cooperative housing options

Many people require modifications to their existing accommodation or will require structural changes to their future housing. Workers may:
consult with occupational therapists to determine the nature and extent of modifications required;

and liaise with relevant agencies to ensure that necessary changes are implemented.

Although the Housing Resource & Support Service Inc. does not manage housing stock, it does have access to a number of properties in the Melbourne metropolitan region and has links with housing managers and providers who offer a variety of housing options. The Housing Resource & Support Service Inc. also operates a "share" register within the homes of people associated with the service.

  Support Options

The Housing Resource & Support Service Inc. recognizes that securing accommodation can sometimes be only a part of the total requirement. Many people also need additional support to live independently in the community, such as:

personal care services

visiting nursing services

Home and Community Care (HACC)

social support services

Once the nature of support has been determined the workers link people to the service they require. Where services are unavailable or inadequate, the worker will advocate for the service to be more responsive to the needs of people with physical disability.
