My father died when I was eight years old and until very recently the only memories I had of him were based on photos or other people's stories about him. I felt strangely disconnected from a person with whom I'd shared eight years of life. The end of the song features a tape of my father singing at a party when I was about three. An old neighbor of ours tracked me down and gave it to me about two weeks before we did the record.
