Dog's Eye View: Notes NOTES FROM THE ROAD
DAISY TOUR '97
VOLUME 1
9/4/97

It's Thursday the fourth of September and we're on the road again. We've just spent three days in Seattle basking in the sun and playing the Bumbershoot festival and a wonderful in-store performance at EZ Street records in West Seattle. We've been touring for about a month now, and tonight is our first proper headlining gig of the tour. We spent a couple of weeks with Barenaked ladies and then we spent about a week and a half with Del Amitri. It was nice to get warmed up, but I'm really looking forward to doing some shows as a headliner. Opening sets can be really confining as far as what we get to play and how much time we can spend saying stupid things to the audience. As you probably know by now, the new record, Daisy, is out now. The first single is "homecoming parade" and it's getting some airplay now. We're getting ready to release the next single in October. I hope y'all are enjoying the record. If you haven't gotten it yet, then please feel free to run out and grab one at a store near you. Heck, if you aren't hearing it on the radio, feel free to call your local radio station and demand that they play it.

Okay, now that you know where we are and what's going on...

I've just finished reading a bunch of Larry McMurtry books. The final one was Terms of Endearment which would have been much better if our friend Randy hadn't spoiled the ending for me about 300 pages into the book. If you see Randy, tell him I'll get him back--but I'll wait until he's done making our new T-shirts. I'm heading into a book called "The God of Small things" (I think), and then it's into "Midnight in the garden of good and evil". Other books floating around on the bus are "spycatcher" and "rock wives", but that's a different story.

Music that's been getting a lot of play on the bus has included Missy "misdemeanor" Elliot, Radiohead and Kacy Crowley.

Kacy Crowley is opening up for us for the first leg of this tour which should be terrific. Her record is coming out on the Sixteenth of September and it's completely terrific.

Okay, so onto a sad tale of life on the road for the Dog's eye View boys. We flew to Cincinatti, Ohio the other day to play a show for Labor day. What we found out just a little to late to do anything about it, was that we were being offered up as the opening act for Jackyl. Yes, you remember Jackyl--they had a big hit with a chainsaw solo in the middle of it. You know, one of those ridiculous bands that you never thought you'd hear from again. Well, they're back, and we opened for them. You might think (as we hoped) that they'd be laughed off stage and we'd do fine, but the truth was just the opposite. The polite way to say it would be that we were not greeted with great enthusiasm. The reality is that we faced about 30 Dog's Eye View fans in a sea of Jackyl fans. It wouldn't have been so bad if we didn't have to play for 90 minutes. After a while it was kind of fun to play songs like Haywire and Umbrella and watch people get upset. Needless to say, though, we won't be out on tour with Jackyl any time soon. You can quote me on that.

Oh, well, it's time to go for now. Take care, I'll right more soon.

Peter
