Far up in the northern parallels, is a small island along the inside passage of Southeast Alaska. This island became home to hundreds of Norsk immigrants in the late 1800's who brought their knowledge of the fishing industry and their hard work ethic to the village that was later named Petersburg, after Peter Buschmann, the first Norwegian to stake a claim on the island which reminded him so much of the homeland he left behind. More than 100 years later, the community residents are strong, hearty Alaskans who fish for their dinner, hunt for their hides, and play in the rain. But they still hold dear many of the Norsk customs and traditions of a century ago, such as julebuking and celebrating Settende Mei, Norway's Constitution Day on May 17th. It is on this day that the village of Petersburg comes alive, with parades, smorgasborgs, scandinavian pastries on every street corner, children in their finest bunaden doing the schottishe down the street.
