Sichuan
is commonly known as the land of plenty. The word Sichuan means
four rivers, and there are two very distinct weather patterns in the province.
The eastern Sichuan Basin is a more tropical region where tropical summers
and mild winters promote a long and plentiful growing season. In the western
part of the province where the geography turns to high plateau there is
less rainfall and cooler climates with periods of frost and sometimes snow
in the winter, allowing a perfect climate for root and winter vegetables such
as melons and citrus.
The Sichuan region provides all of China and
beyond with the vegetables that are used in daily cooking. Sichuan itself
is famous for its Chengdu
Market where farmers from the region come to sell their fresh vegetables
and where tourists from China and beyond come to appreciate the abundance
of the unique region.
