CREDITS
"When I told friends I was recording a Live Christmas Concert in September, one joked, "So what's next, a 4th of July celebration in January?"  It was a little crazy to be looking for Christmas trees, decking the halls, and rehearsing Christmas tunes out of season, but the Spirit of Christmas defies the norm, breaks the "rules", and awakens us in unexpected ways.  At 8pm, September 6th, in the Martha Rivers Ingram hall at Vanderbilt University, among musicians, technicians, video crew, sound crew, and an audience full of friends and fans willing to ring out the bells a little early, we were carried into Christmas;  A Star to guide us, a song to remind us, the promises of Christmas were here, alive for any season."

New colors dancing on evergreen branches
You feel a change in the wind
Brings new life to your eyes once again

A year full of memories, hard tears, good smiles
Suddenly the yuletide is near
Creeps in quietly, soon undeniable catches your heat
You're part of the story of Christmas

Joyful day
A star to guide you, a song to remind you
The Joy will stay
Long past the turn of the page
In the story of Christmas

Ribbons and strings, cold frozen streams
Forgotten dreams running wild
When every Mother and Father is a child

The song of an angel, good cheer to a stranger
The loved ones you've known all the way
Coming back to the heart of the matter to scatter the whistles and bells
You're telling the story of Christmas

Joyful day
A star to guide you, a song to remind you
The Joy will stay
Long past the turn of the page
In the story of Christmas

Sing Joy  return to the top of the page
Peter Mayer

These days of winter have come to bury you
No sign of spring and no promise to carry you
No flowers blooming in your window sill
And the beat of your heart is too still...
And the beat of your heart is too still... Oh sing

Joy joy joy in the morning
Joy joy in the afternoon
Joy joy joy for the child is born
This night the promise is given to you

Come gather together you children who wander
Looking for dreams that the whole world has squandered
You’ve lost them you’ve sold them for pockets of gold
And you long to come in from the cold... Oh Sing

Joy joy joy in the morning
Joy joy in the afternoon
Joy joy joy for the child is born
This night the promise is given to you

Lying in the cradle no warrior no king of the land
Only a child would bring peace in the palm of his hand
Singing joy joy joy

Through trials and darkness fear and temptation
You look for deliverance and some revelation
With no song of spring you wait for the call
Could thiere be nothing at all...Oh Sing

Joy joy joy in the morning
Joy joy in the afternoon
Joy joy joy for the child is born
This night the promise is given to you

Harmony return to the top of the page
Peter Mayer, Mac McAnally, Roger Guth

Tonight a choir sings in harmony
Shoppers hurry by or make a choice
Main Street wears the same Christmas every year
And carolers repeat the sounding joy

Just an hour to closing time at Georges' market
The old man wraps up chocolate and the beer
Says fine when asked how's your boy been
Though he hasn't heard a word from him this year

Hear the children singing peace on earth
Must they close their eyes to see
You can dream of home for Christmas
But it's a long way back to Harmony

Half a days drive east he found Chicago
It took years to shake the small town from his shoes
He thinks of home, then he thinks again
And sees his old man shake his head and disapprove

Hear the children singing peace on earth
To a scattered family
You can dream of home for Christmas
But it's a long way back to Harmony

It doesn't really if it's yours or if it's mine
It's the same amount of distance taken one step at a time

Three more years a choir sings in Harmony
The old man and the market fade away
But his son's been coming home to talk to him
To wrestle out a thing or two he could never say

Hear the children singing peace on earth
To this scattered family
It's never enough for all you try to be
But you're welcome home
It's a long way home
But you're welcome home in Harmony

It's Christmas time again New Year's 'round the bend
There must be something more than give and take
What it's all about turns you inside out
'Till you finally see the difference you make

Chorus
This Christmas this Christmas
There's a gift that only you can give
This Christmas this Christmas
Give yourself to

Love is in short supply such an obvious demand
Shouldn't be so hard to understand
We hang the lights for hope look for the star to follow

Stars and Promises  return to the top of the page
Peter Mayer

Winter's come again too soon this year
Grab your hat and woolen scarf my dear
Feathers from a Robin's wing
That's all you'll find to remind you of spring

Colored lights in ornamental strings
Turn ordinary streets to special things
A sigh catches your breath
Then a smile for the season of stars and promises

Children skate beneath the snowy trees
Elders glide along on memories
Carolers for joy will sing
The bells will ring for Christmas a Merry Christmas

Friends and dear ones from our yesterdays
Coming home to that familiar place
A sigh catches your breath then a smile for
The season of stars and promises

Love is Born Anew  return to the top of the page
Peter Mayer

Chorus
Sing a song of love made new
Born on this Christmas day
Heaven and earth rejoice in the view
When love is born anew
Love is born anew

Flow river flow through highlands and drylands
Raise blossoms where nothing could bloom
Come living waters lift up your children
And nothing shall come between us and you

Chorus

The journey may take you through roads long and weary
May lead you through nights long and cold
But lovers are dreamers healing believers
You can move mountains by singing a song of your soul

Won't you sing 'til the end
Dance from the start
Join your hands and your hearts
And sing

In living and dying, laughing and crying
The words of the Lord remain true
Nothing can sever this gift of forever
And each Christmas night the stars guiding light will find you

Chorus

Hey Joseph return to the top of the page
Peter Mayer

On a cold dark night a man and his wife to be
Walked a wilderness road
With a donkey, supplies, and a woman with child
Don't you know its a heavy load

Joseph a good man of carpenter's trade
Had made plans to make Mary his mate
Then an angel appeared and said Joe don't you fear
But the spirit will dance with your date
The spirit will dance with your date

Hey Joseph keep walking, Hey Joseph keep walking
Hey Joseph keep walking to Bethlehem
Hey Joseph keep walking, Hey Joseph keep walking
Keep walking Joseph you're part of the plan

They came to the city of David that night
But no inn had a place for their keep
Mary said Joseph I think it's my time
Said Joseph Oh Lord Why me
Said Joseph Oh Lord Why me

So they arrived at the last inn in sight
With no room but a stable so low
And Mary gave birth to the savior of earth
With the faith of her good husband Joe

On the freeways and byways, in village and town
On this 21st century road
We've traveled so far but still look for the star
Don't you know it’s a heavy load

Hey Joseph keep walking, Hey Joseph keep walking
Hey Joseph keep walking to Bethlehem
Hey Joseph keep walking, Hey Joseph keep walking
Keep walking Joseph you're part of the plan

This Town  return to the top of the page
Peter Mayer

They're puttin' up the lights for the holidays in this town
Winding down the old year into new
They're talking at the bar 'bout how we've come so far
And where the hell this road is leading to

Drove on by my old high school in this town
And where are all those crazy friends I made
Spent our precious time o History and Science
When all we wanted was a kiss to graduate
We were looking for the kiss to graduate

We were driving down the main street of America
Young and free and so misunderstood
Looking for the exit sign, a place to ease our mind
Some kept movin' on and some would stay for good
Oh in this town

So I found the one and fell in love in this town
Had a secret place down every avenue
Times would get so hard, nearly fell apart
But we were crazy enough to see it through
Just crazy enough to see this through

It takes a leaving to see where you've been for so long
And it's never quite the same old place you knew
The scenery will change but home will remain
The part of me that still belongs to you
It's Christmas time I'm coming home to you

We were looking for the hometown of America
Around the world they're looking just like you
They sent a rocket ship to Mars to investigate the stars
They keep falling as we are passing through   . . . this town

We were looking for the main street of America
Looking for the heart of Christmas
We were looking for the hometown of America in this town

Ring Out the Bells  return to the top of the page
Peter Mayer

Oh ring out the bells ring out
'Tis here the time for the season now
Raise up your voices and shout
Christmas has come that's the reason

Once again, the story begins
Bringing good news in the night
Ring out the bells Christmastide

Break out the lights shine them bright
Hang them from tree and from rafter
Let them burn all through the night
Light up your hearts with the laughter

The Christmas star, shines from afar
A herald of joy far and wide
Break out the lights Christmastide

Ring Bells o'er mountains and valleys
Ring Bells through city and field
Ring Bells over the oceans
Ring Bells as joy is revealed

Gather round the joyful sound
Young and old the same
All the hopes and fears will greet the new year
Still the song remains

Ring out the bells ring out
In every land different voices
Ring joy within and without
Even cold winter rejoices

Once again, the story begins
Bringing good news in the night
Ring out the bells Christmastide
Oh Ring out the bells
Ring out the bells
