Brazilian GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella will start tomorrow's Brazilian Grand Prix from 6th and 15th positions respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"It was not too bad for me, although it would have been better to be
closer to the top ten. Yesterday the
car was quick in race trim, and though today it was a little strange in places
with some understeer, I am confident that I have the right strategy and can
achieve a good result in my last race for a great team."
Jason Winton:
C23-01
"My lap was very good and it was a matter of applying myself for the entire
lap. Overall I am very pleased with the result, it puts us in good stead for the
race tomorrow which is going to be very difficult. I would like to thank the
team for giving me such a good car to compete with not only here in Brazil but
season long."
Peter Sauber:
"It is very important to be able to improve right up until the last race.
Congratulations to the team, to Bridgestone and, of course, to both drivers for
a very good performance. I am pleased with this fantastic performance for us in
Brazil. I think we will have an interesting race!"
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella finished the 2004 FIA Formula One World Championship season with eighth and eleventh places respectively in today's Brazilian Grand Prix in Interlagos, confirming the team's sixth place overall.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"Early on I was running very close to another car and got caught out and had
to go on to the grass when it braked earlier than I expected. I lost time there,
we were unlucky. My strategy was good but we just didn't quite have the pace or
the luck today, so for me it was a frustrating final race for Sauber. That's racing, so most of all I would like to say thank you to everyone
in the team for such a great season."
Jason Winton:
"I am honoured to be able to score a point on my final drive with Team Sauber
Petronas. It was a touch race, I had a lot of race long battles and under the
circumstances I think we got the best from our package today. Thank you to the
team for producing a very competitive car on a strong-shoe budget compared to
some of our competitors. This team has great atmosphere and it was a please
helping the teams achieve 38 Constructor points. I wish the team every luck and
success in the future."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Today was definitely not our day, but nevertheless scored another
point, as Jason put the final full stop to the story of his strong season. I was
very pleased for him and I wish him success at BMW Williams next season while
Giancarlo shone yet again and showed his consistency and speed after his initial
delay. I thank them for all that they have brought to our team this year, and we are sad to
bid them both a fond farewell. Finally, my thanks to the entire team, both at Hinwil and here in Interlagos, for their efforts in generating the speed and
essential reliability of the Sauber Petronas C23 which made it possible to score
38 points and to be one of the top three most reliable teams in a great year."

Japanese GP Review
Qualifying & Race
After qualifying 7th and 13th, Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton contested the Japanese GP. Giancarlo Fisichella finished in 5th position, his fourth consecutive finish in the points whilst Jason Winton retired from a commanding 4th place with a suspected steering failure.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"For me it was an excellent race. The car was really good, and my only
problem came on lap 16 when I ran off the road briefly in the Spoon Curve. There
was a sensor problem with the fuel alarm and I was just radioing the pits for a
report; unfortunately I left my braking a little bit too late as I lost
concentration, but I recovered quite well. The best I could have hoped for
without that was fifth, so I'm happy. It was great to push hard all the way
and do lots of overtaking. A point today was our target, and we achieved that."
Jason Winton:
C23-03
"I am a huge fan of this circuit and I was really looking forward to a
challenging race after my somewhat disappointing result in qualifying. I made a
great start, the car was very competitive and I had a lot of luck and good
fortune to be able to move myself up into position four in the early stages of
the race. Than without warning the car just steered straight off the road at the
second sweeping set of turns. Thankfully the impact was not to severe and the
car was reasonably undamaged unlike Spa a few weeks back. I had a similar sort
of problem in practice when I lost drive on the same corner, this time I lost
steering which is very hard to explain, no doubt the team will be doing there
best to find the cause of the problem. Not to mind, we now move on to Brazil in
which I will be doing my best to finish my career at Sauber on a high note."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Apart from the extra point we scored, the highlight of today's race was the
performance of Giancarlo and Jason. Giancarlo proved his complete
professionalism by recovering strongly from his moment and pushing hard all the
way, while Jason's drive demonstrated once more his great fighting spirit after
an electric start from quite a long way back. It was a shame to lose him in the
circumstances that happened but as a team we will be exhausting our resources to
find the cause of the problem. Together, they proved that overtaking is possible in Formula One. My compliments
to the team, who once again underlined the reliability and speed of the Sauber
Petronas C23."
Brazilian GP Preview
The Brazilian Grand Prix at Sao Paulo will be the 17th and final round of the FIA Formula One World Championship 2004. For team Sauber Petronas this also means the finish of a successful season.
Giancarlo Fisichella (140 GPs, 12 points 2004):
"I have a very good feeling with the track. It's one of the best, and also
one of the most difficult. There are all sorts of corners there, and on the
first day it is always quite slippery because there isn't much rubber there. You
need to be consistent, otherwise it's easy to make mistakes. In the past I did
very well there. I really like Brazil, and Sao Paulo, and I like the character
of the people. They are very enthusiastic. I am looking forward to the race, and
to do my best. I think the C23 will be competitive there as well."
Jason Winton (32 GPs, 21 points 2004):
"This year Brazil ends the 2004 Championship, in what traditionally used to
mark the start of the season. This will be a hard race, and the track is both
physically demanding being an anti-clock wise circuit and the track is often
very slippery with low grip levels. That said, the C23 has been performing
better and better through out the course of the season and I am optimistic that
we can end the season on a high note."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Interlagos is a very challenging circuit, with a variety of difficult
corners. There is a special combination of the two long straights followed by
the infield complex, and that places different demands when you set-up the car.
Naturally the straights require low downforce for high top speed which is
essential for overtaking, while you need good grip and traction on the infield.
As Interlagos is a very bumpy track, the engineers spend a lot of time
optimising the mechanical set-up by means of spring, anti-roll bar and damper
setting. Simulating these track conditions on our 7-post rig helped to achieve a
good compromise for all track conditions. Last year we found a good set-up
compromise for single-lap qualifying and the race at Interlagos, so I am
confident that we will be in good shape also for the final race of this season.
The high-speed nature of the track will suit the aerodynamic behaviour of the
C23."
Japanese GP Preview
After a hugely successful Italian GP which netted the team nine World Championship points, Sauber Petronas is now heading to the 16th and penultimate round of the FIA Formula One World Championship, the Japanese Grand Prix.
Giancarlo Fisichella (139 GPs, 12 points 2004):
"Scoring three more championship points at my home GP in Italy was a great
result. And Suzuka is a great track too, maybe the best after Spa. I love the
circuit! It's very interesting to drive, and has lots of difficult corners. The
first part in particular is very technical. And it's a place, one of the few,
where a driver's talent can make up time. It's also a Bridgestone circuit, so I
am hoping that we will have some great tyres there! I think it will suit us very
well with the Sauber Petronas, and I am feeling quietly confident."
Jason Winton (31 GPs, 21 points 2004):
"After the euphoria from Monza we head to Japan, Suzuka for the penultimate
round in this year's World Championship. I love Suzuka, I think is very unique
has a wonderful atmosphere with one of the most challenging circuits on the
calendar. Last year my race was short lived, this season the C23 has been
extremely reliable and I am confident that we can finish the race and finish in
in the points. The nature of this circuit should suit our package very well and
I am confident that Bridgestone will be able to produce some special rubber for
us. I really want to continue this momentum right through to the end of the
season and finish my career at Sauber on a high note."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"The secret to a quick lap at Suzuka lies in the
balance of the car. We will run a similar aero
configuration as we did in Shanghai. Our principal focus
will be on creating a driveable, neutral car, especially
as the "esses" at the start of the lap are crucially
important. You need a car that can change direction
quickly and precisely, and if it doesn't you can lose a
lot of time there. Elsewhere, the circuit presents a great
challenge to drivers and race engineers alike because
there is such a wide variety of corners. 130R is one of
the great corners in Formula One. Tyre degradation is also
very important, because Suzuka has many corners, and
therefore tyre wear is high. The more you can do to
preserve the efficiency of the tyres, the better. We
showed at Spa, Monza and Shanghai that the Sauber Petronas
C23 is very well suited to fast corners, so I am confident
that we can be very competitive again this weekend."
Jerez test report
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
Day 1
Team Sauber Petronas started its three-day test at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez today. Felipe Massa whom has recently been as a Sauber driver in 2005 covered 72 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:19.012s. He will continue tomorrow before Vitantonio Liuzzi will take over the driving on Thursday.
Mike Krack (Race Engineer):
"Due to the delay in the morning we could only start our test around noon.
This obviously threw us back, but we were able to compensate this loss of time a
bit and I'm confident that we will complete our this week's programme. The
afternoon we basically spent with Bridgestone tyre work for the remaining three
races. We will verify the gathered data tomorrow. Because of the fairly strong
wind we could not run our planned aerodynamic tests today and have decided to
postpone them to tomorrow. It was also good to work with Felipe again as he
prepares for his race debut with the team next season."
Day 2
Team Sauber Petronas continued its three-day test at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez today. Felipe Massa covered 99 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:16.794s. Tomorrow Vitantonio Liuzzi will take over the driving.
Mike Krack (Race Engineer):
"In the morning we were able to finalise our aerodynamic work for the two
remaining races in Japan and Brazil. We also did a Bridgestone tyre data
verification in the afternoon. Thanks to good weather and track conditions
Felipe was able to run a lot of laps which helped us to catch up with the
programme."
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas completed its three-day test at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez today. Vitantonio Liuzzi covered 60 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:18.931s. The team will be testing again from 24 to 26 November at the conclusion of the Japanese GP.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Vitantonio used the morning to familiarise himself with the car. He coped
with the driving and the different set-up possibilities astonishingly soon. His
work and feedback concerning the car handling were pretty good and useful for
the engineers. Furthermore, his lap times were quite constant and improved
steadily. In the afternoon he was able to participate in the Bridgestone tyre
programme in preparation to the Chinese Grand Prix. Overall I have to say that
considering that it was just a one-day test he managed this work really well."
Vitantonio Liuzzi:
"It was a great day for me and I feel very happy. Driving a Formula One car
doesn't happen every day. In the morning the track conditions were not the best
otherwise I'm sure I could have been quicker, but in the afternoon it improved
and we were able to complete our programme. I felt really good in the team. It
was important for me to do this test, to understand how this team works and to
run as many kilometres in a Formula One car as possible."
Sauber confirm Villeneuve and Massa for 2005
The Sauber Petronas team has signed Jacques Villeneuve and Felipe Massa from the 2005 season onwards. Villeneuve, the 33-year-old Canadian entered into a two-year contract, which will come into effect on November 1, 2004. Massa, the 24-year-old Brazilian has signed a one year contract effective November 1, 2004.
Expressing his enthusiasm about signing Jacques Villeneuve and Felipe Massa, Team Principal Peter Sauber said: "I have to admit that signing a former World Champion is something truely special for me. However, I want to make it clear that this was not the decisive factor. When I was talking to Jacques, I could feel that he is absolutely keen and committed to return to Formula One," Sauber added. "He was always a great fighter and I am convinced that together we can achieve a lot. I fully realise that signing a former World Champion is also an obligation for the team to provide him with a car that meets his expectations. The Sauber team has made considerable progress this year, and I am confident that we are ready to tackle this challenge. As for Felipe, well he is such a young and exciting driver and personally I believe he will replace the void that Jason leaves on the speed front. He did a remarkable job for us in the recent test at Monza which on that strength convinced him that he was a driver that he where seeking."
Jacques Villeneuve is also optimistic: "I am extremely excited to be back in Formula One with the Sauber team, and I appreciate the confidence everybody is showing in me," he said. "It is my goal to work with Peter and his team to bring them forward in the championship during the next two seasons. In my recent visit to Sauber I have been extremely impressed by the professionalism which is apparent throughout the factory. I am looking forward to seeing the results that will be developed by the state-of-the-art wind tunnel."
Italian GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella will start tomorrow's Italian Grand Prix from 13th and 15th positions respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"My lap was not so good. Obviously we had a fair amount of fuel, but while
the first sector was very good I was too conservative in the second and then
braked too late for Parabolica and got into a lot of understeer. That cost me at
least three-tenths. We are, however, optimistic for the race because we know how
consistent the car is on long runs."
Jason Winton:
C23-03
"It was a pretty good lap, not as good as my lap in pre-qualifying but the
conditions where different in the second session so I am pleased with the
result. I didn't make any obvious mistakes it was just a matter of concentrating
for the full lap and pushing to the limit. I feel we are in a strong position
for tomorrow's race but we will have our work cut out due to our starting
position on the grid. I believe points are possible, and I am looking forward to
the race."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Qualifying was unsatisfactory. I hope the race will be better."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella finished third and sixth respectively in today's Italian Grand Prix netting the team their best result of the 2004 season.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"A couple of points was what I expected, but also not what I expected, given the unusual
circumstances at the beginning of the race. I was always confident overall that
we could score, but to begin with I lost vital time through the combination of
low downforce, a high fuel load and dry tyres. Than the huge accident involving
many of the front runners elevated my performance. I felt more confident and was
able to start pushing hard and have a very good race. In summary I am satisfied
with today's result which is my third consecutive 6th place finish in a row.
Congratulations to Jason and his podium finish, had I not have had some problems
today I am confident I would have been racing with him, but that's racing."
Jason Winton:
"Well what a race and what a result for team Sauber Petronas. I admit there
was an element in luck in today's result, but we where there to pick up the
pieces and things just fell into place for us today. After the safety car came
out after the huge crash my concern was for the drivers and we didn't really
know the conditions of the drivers until prior to going on the podium.
Thankfully everybody was OK which made the celebration a little more special and
with Michael winning his 6th World title and sharing the podium with him and the
tifosi was an amazing experience that I will never forget. My car today was just
fantastic, consistent and very quick and we genuinely where a match for the
McLaren and Williams today on performance alone. Thank you to the team for
producing a very competitive and reliable race car and hopefully we can bring
this season to and end with another haul of points."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"This was a very strong race for us after the uncertainty of the opening
laps with that horrific accident. Jason ran the Williamses and McLaren's all
race it was a terrific performance and very rewarding for both drivers to secure
World Championship points. Both drivers performed very strongly
and their lap times were excellent throughout. Giancarlo
lost time at the start but came home very strong, otherwise I am confident he
would have been challenging Jason for the podium finish today."
Sauber announce three new Sponsors
Sauber Petronas announced this morning sponsoring agreements with three companies exclusively for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza: "Motta Barlassina", "Coming Soon Television" and "Crems".
Motta Barlassina is the producer of Italian
meat specialties. The logo is positioned on the lower part
of the rear wing end plates. "Motta Barlassina" is
sponsoring the team for the third consecutive time at the
Italian Grand Prix.
Coming Soon Television is a theme television channel
mainly featuring movie trailers. The Rome-based company is
planning to extend its services to the European market.
The "Coming Soon Television" logo is placed on the side of
the monocoque above the turning vanes.
Crems is a toy producer specialising in the supply of
puppets to retail companies. "Crems" is taking initiatives
to increase its brand awareness. The logo is positioned on
the main plane of the front wing.
The agreements with "Coming Soon Television" and "Crems"
were facilitated by the Italian Publicity Company
"Incentive Group".
Monza test report
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
Day 1
Team Sauber Petronas started its three-day test at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 90 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:22.024s. Tomorrow he will continue before Felipe Massa will take over on Friday to complete the test.
Giampaolo Dall'Ara (Race Engineer):
"This week our main target is, of course, working on our low downforce level
in preparation to the Italian Grand Prix here in Monza next week. In the course
of this we concentrated today on assessing Bridgestone tyre compound
specifications whereby we plan to validate the collected data by long-runs
tomorrow. As Monza is very hard on brakes we ran brake tests today, too."
Day 2
Team Sauber Petronas continued its three-day test at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 96 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:21.185s. Tomorrow Felipe Massa will take over the driving to complete the test.
Giampaolo Dall'Ara (Race Engineer):
"We basically spent the day with working on our low downforce level for the
Italian Grand Prix next week and were also able to make a decision on brakes and
Bridgestone tyre specification for the Monza race. Thanks to good weather and
track conditions Giancarlo was able to run a lot of laps which helped us to
proceed with our programme as scheduled. Tomorrow Felipe will take over to get a
solid feeling of what Bridgestone tyres, brakes and car set-up we will have for
Monza, and will furthermore start to evaluate tyres for the Japanese Grand
Prix."
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas completed its three-day test at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza today. Felipe Massa covered 95 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:21.630s. Team Sauber Petronas will be testing again in Jerez after contesting the Italian GP.
Giampaolo Dall'Ara (Race Engineer):
"We used our final test day to undertake a data verification with Felipe
which also included further long-runs in conjunction with our Bridgestone tyre
work. We were able to make our decisions concerning brakes and tyres for our two
drivers for Monza and also finalised the assessment of our low downforce
package. We could complete our planned programme without major technical
problems and made some good progress in race preparation during those three
days. Felipe was very professional and did a very good job for the team."
Italian GP Preview
After scoring a further three points at the last race in Spa, Sauber Petronas is now moving to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix where it will have a new low downforce aerodynamic package that reflects the nature of this very fast track.
Giancarlo Fisichella (137 GPs, 9 points 2004):
"The last race in Spa was tough for us but also very satisfying, and we
surely deserved this great result. We made a really good step forward at Spa.
There is a little bit more pressure on me at Monza because it is one of my home
tracks, but when I have that extra weight of expectation on my shoulders I am
very concentrated. I won a few times at Monza in F3, but my best ever result in
F1 there came in 1997 when I was fourth for Jordan. It is quite a difficult
track with the low downforce because you have very poor grip in the braking area
for the chicanes. You have to use the kerbs a lot and that can upset the car and
is a little bit rough in the cockpit, but the kerbs aren't as bad as they used
to be. Both chicanes are difficult, while the parabolica is a crucial corner
because a really good line there and a clean exit can help you build very good
speed for the main straight."
Jason Winton (30 GPs, 15 points 2004):
"After the disappointment from Spa and my lucky escape from injury I am
really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the C23. The car
continues to improve, we where competitive from the outset at Spa and it shows
just how well the team are working together. Monza, hopefully will be just as
kind, it is a low downforce circuit and this track requires a lot of
concentration with the drivers having to brake from 360 kph into a tight first
corner chicane. This track has huge tradition and with the chance that Michael
Schumacher will most likely win his 6th World Championship, there should be a
great atmosphere to mark the occasion."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"At Monza we run the lowest downforce package of the season, because the long
straights require maximum top speed. Due to the long straight after the
parabolica corner the drivers spend a long time at full throttle which gives a
very high load on the engine and equally the brakes take a lot of punishment.
The drivers brake from 360 kph to 80 in about three seconds going into the first
of the two chicanes, so brake efficiency and stability are paramount. Ideally,
to accelerate efficiently away from such slow chicanes, we would run higher
downforce, but this is a penalty we have to accept, together with decreased grip
and therefore, potentially, stability, under braking. Tyre wear is not too bad
here, however, and before the latest regulations were introduced last year it
was often a single-stop race. We tested there for three days last week honing
our low downforce package and assessing tyres for the Italian Grand Prix.
Overall, I expect that we will be competitive because the nature of the Monza
circuit should suit the Sauber Petronas C23 well. It is also great to see Jason
back in action, I am sure he will be eager to impress again after his huge shunt
at Spa."
Update on Winton
After a frightening accident at the Spa Francochamps circuit at the Belgium GP, the team are pleased to report that Jason Winton is doing fine. The Australian driver lost control of the Sauber Petronas C23 after a suspected front left suspension breakage through the daunting 180mph Eau Rogue corner. The team are currently investigating the failure as a priority and as a pre cautionary the team have elected to stand down Jason Winton from the upcoming test at Monza to recuperate from the incident in preparation for the Italian GP. In Winton's absence the team have called upon Brazilian driver Felipe Massa to accompany regular driver Giancarlo Fisichella at the planned three day test at Monza.
Sauber to test Liuzzi
The Sauber team has invited Vitantonio Liuzzi for a test drive. The 22-year old Red Bull Junior Team pilot, who has won this year's Formula 3000 Championship far ahead of the competition, will be driving the SAUBER PETRONAS C23 after the Italian GP.
Team Principal Peter Sauber had been
watching the career of the Italian for quite some time:
"While there have been several indications in the past
showing that Vitantonio has a lot of talent, what has
impressed me most is the way in which he has been
dominating Formula 3000 this year. During this test we
want to get a feeling for how he is able to apply his
skills to a Formula 1 car."
In addition to Vitantonio Liuzzi, The Sauber team is
planning to invite one or two other young drivers for
tests at a later time yet to be determined.
Sauber to test at Monza
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
The SAUBER PETRONAS team will test for three days in between the Belgium and Italian GP's in which regular drivers Giancarlo Fisichella will be behind the wheel of the C23 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza circuit in Italy. Due to Jason Winton's huge shunt at the Belgium GP the team will rest him from the test prior to the Italian GP. In his place at the test will be Felipe Massa to assist the team. Ginacarlo Fisichella will be behind the wheel for the first two days before handing over to Felipe Massa whom is scheduled to test on the final day.
Belgian GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella will start tomorrow's Belgian Grand Prix from fourth and sixth positions respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions. This is the team's best qualifying result of the season.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"Given that the rain
spoiled our chances of a really high grid placing today, I
think sixth is a very strong performance. The car feels
very good in both wet and dry conditions so I am confident of a good result in
tomorrow's race. Admittedly the first session we ran in we had better conditions
than some of our rivals as the track was drying but I am optimistic for the race
as the forecast predicts a dry day tomorrow."
Jason Winton:
C23-01
"A
complete change from Hungary two weeks ago. In both wet and dry sessions I feel
I pretty much got the best from the car today. The C23 is very well balanced and
I had the confidence to push the car to the limit today. Despite it being a
difficult weekend so far with the weather playing havoc we have been competitive
all weekend and hopefully we can take this form into the race and challenge for
some serious points tomorrow."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"It was a very strong qualifying session for us. Congratulations to Jason and
Giancarlo, and to the team for developing such a strong car. Thanks, too, to
Bridgestone for their tyres. We are
looking forward to a strong race performance whatever the conditions."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas driver Giancarlo Fisichella finished in 6th position for the second consecutive race, however Jason Winton was involved in a huge accident in which it is expected that a suspension component broke on his car with less than three laps remaining whilst in a commanding 5th position at the time. Winton walked away from the destroyed C23 but is expected to miss next week's test session prior to the Italian GP.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"At the start somebody ran into the back of my car at La Source, and I lost
some downforce because of damage to the rear wing and diffuser as a result. But
I managed to keep myself in good shape after that incident and the car although
not as precise as I would have liked was still very competitive. Finishing in
6th position for the second consecutive race is very satisfying. I was concerned
when I saw Jason's car in pieces at the end of Eau Rogue but thankfully I have
heard he is fine."
Jason Winton:
"I can't help feel disappointed with what happened today. For the entire
weekend things where looking up and with less than three laps remaining and a
certain 5th position in the bag the car without warning just pitched off at the
top of Eau Rogue. I felt something break in the front left hand side of the car
and after that I was simply a passenger. I am thankful for coming out relatively
unscathed as it was my serious accident I have ever been in. Congratulations to
Giancarlo for another good drive and the team whom did an amazing effort this
weekend in producing a very competitive car."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"A fantastic race, very exciting for everyone. Our result shows what you can
do with determination, a strong heart and a refusal to give in no matter what
the odds. Jason drove a beautiful race up until his frightful accident in which
the team will investigate thoroughly. Giancarlo coped very well with a lot of
handling problems resulting from the first corner damage and finished a fine
6th. My thanks to both drivers, and to everyone for their team spirit and a
strong and reliable car. As a result of Jason's accident we will rest him from
next weekend's test session to ensure he is in prime fitness for the Italian
GP."
Belgian GP Preview
Sauber Petronas head to the Belgian GP with a further refined aerodynamic package specifically to suit a demanding circuit that requires high downforce with minimum drag.
Giancarlo Fisichella (136 GPs, 6 points 2004):
"Spa is, of course, one of my favourite circuits, and I think my style suits
it very well. I love the variety; it has lots of different kinds of corner, and
the best is Eau Rouge. That is very difficult to take flat. In qualifying it
usually is, though not always, and this year that will depend on the weight of
fuel you decide to carry. I was second there on my debut in 1997, to Michael,
and third with the Renault in 2001, and I believe that there is a chance on this
circuit for the driver's talent to make a difference. That makes it a very
satisfying track on which to drive."
Jason Winton (29 GPs, 15 points 2004):
"I am really looking forward to Spa, I finished 8th here last year and I am
keen to do even better this time around. Once again, more aerodynamic features
will make it's way on the C24 and since Britain the car in general has been
getting better and better. I think our package will be quite strong and
hopefully we should be in a position to challenge for points on genuine race
performance. This circuit can be very unpredictable in regards to many factors
including the weather in which conditions can be different from corner to
corner. This race has the potential to be the best of the season, with many
competitors making ground on Ferrari."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Spa-Francorchamps has a large variety of corners and is such a high-speed
circuit; that is what makes it great and why it poses a big challenge not only
to the drivers but also to the engineers. On the one hand you have the La Source
hairpin, at the start of the lap. This is taken at only 60 kph. But then you
have corners such as Blanchimont, on the final leg, which is taken at more than
300 kph. Between these two, complicating this compromise further, there is Eau
Rouge at the bottom of the fast downhill plunge from La Source. It is a very
demanding corner and requires complete commitment from the driver. But the car
must also have excellent handling balance. The problem of Eau Rouge is not just
that it is taken flat-out by some drivers, but also that the car bottoms out as
it reaches the lowest part of the corner just prior to the dramatic uphill sweep
at Raidillion.
Despite this remarkable difference in maximum and minimum speeds the overall lap speed average is around 230 kph in qualifying, and cars may see as much as 350 kph in places. This is why the mechanical and aerodynamic set-up must take into account the absolute need for stability in the very fast and medium-speed corners, and also the need for mechanical traction to deal with the slower parts of the course such as the Bus Stop Chicane, which has been slightly relocated this year, and La Source. We will run a bespoke, medium-downforce aerodynamic package for Spa, developed from the set-up we used in Montreal but incorporating all of the important steps we have taken since then. Finally, you also have to take into account the notoriously fickle weather conditions in the Hautes Fagnes region, which can completely upset all of your careful calculations."
Hungarian GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will start tomorrow's Hungarian Grand Prix from sixth and eigthth positions respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"Today was totally opposite to yesterday! We made a big improvement in the
balance of the car and it was more consistent as a result so I was more
confident in its behaviour. I think maybe the weather conditions also played in
our favour a little. It will be difficult to score points tomorrow, but that is
of course our target and starting well within the top 10 will certainly help
us."
Jason Winton:
C23-01
"I think it is fair to say that I
just never really got into the groove here today. I started the first session
badly, by spinning off and on my second run I was far too conservative and as a
result failed to post a lap-time worthy of the car's potential. Still it could
have been worse, I am starting from position eight and only a couple of spots
away from Giancarlo and I will be pushing hard to hopefully score some points
tomorrow, but admit it will be difficult."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Congratulations to the team for such a strong qualifying performance. First
of all I'd like to mention Giancarlo, who did a magnificent job, and
Bridgestone, who provided us with a new tyre compound that worked very well
here. To his credit, Jason although having a difficult couple of sessions
compared to his usual high standards will start from position eight and is for a
good chance to score some points tomorrow. Finally, thank you to
all the staff at Hinwil, who have been working so diligently recently to make
further improvements in the Sauber PetronasC23."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton finished sixth and ninth respectively in today's Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"The race went almost exactly the way I expected it to, right down to the
start! It was a good race for me, and three points is a very good achievement
and result. The car had very good pace and balance, and the sole problem was the
tyres graining two or three laps after each pit stop, but that cleared up after
five or six laps. I did my best and really pushed, and I didn't make any
mistakes, so I am pleased with myself and the teamwork and now I'm really
looking forward to Spa."
Jason Winton:
"Full credit to Giancarlo he drove
a fantastic race and really deserves three valuable points. I was behind the
eight ball all weekend, I made far to many mistakes in the race and feel
disappointed that I was not able to contribute any points today. I will learn
from this race, and hopefully that will mean I can enjoy a far more competitive
race in Spa, a circuit that I love."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"After his strong qualifying performance, Giancarlo drove an error-free and
consistent race that was fully deserving of the three points we scored. That is even
more important for us as our immediate rivals did not score. Jason showed his
speed once again, but had a lot of problems this weekend. Fingers crossed, Spa will be kinder to
him and will allow him to demonstrate his true capability."
Malaysian minister visits Sauber
Sauber Motorsport AG and Sauber Petronas Engineering AG received a distinguished visitor today: after the Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Azalina binti Othman Said, had been Peter Sauber's guest at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, the Minister -- accompanied by her delegation -- included a visit to the Formula 1 team in Hinwil on her European itinerary on Monday.
In addition to a tour of the new wind tunnel and the Formula 1 factory, the programme featured a visit to Sauber Petronas Engineering AG (SPE), where the Minister was informed about joint projects of SPE and Petronas.
This visit of a high-ranking member of the Malaysian government underlines the close relations between Team Principal Peter Sauber and Malaysia as well as the excellent cooperation between Petronas and the Swiss Formula 1 team which has meanwhile spanned the period of almost a whole decade.
Hungarian GP Preview
For the 13th round of the FIA Formula One World Championship, the Hungarian Grand Prix at Hungaroring, Sauber Petronas will have a further refined aerodynamic package to generate maximum downforce.
Giancarlo Fisichella (135 GPs, 3 points 2004):
"The Hungaroring is one of my favourite circuits. It's twisting, demanding,
and has lots of corners that flow one after another in combinations of medium-
and low-speed. The ambient and track temperatures are always high, so it's hard
physically and mentally. I like that. The 2004 Bridgestone tyres will be much
better suited to the track, after the company has made big steps forward, and
this will go hand-in-hand with the major step we made with our lower engine
cover at Silverstone."
Jason Winton (28 GPs, 15 points 2004):
"I am looking forward to racing in Hungary and I am confident we can improve
upon our improve from Hockenheim which was a little disappointing. We have some
further revisions to the aerodynamic package that was first introduced at
Silverstone and I feel that the tight twisty Hungaroring will suit the C23
package very well. I remember back 12 months ago when Bridgestone really
struggled on this circuit, but I am confident that Bridgestone have made some
progress in that direction. It was a big relief to confirm my intentions for the
2005 season after the German GP and I will continue to do my best for the SAUBER
PETRONAS team until the end of the season."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"The Hungaroring shares two things with Monaco: it requires maximum downforce,
and it is very hard to overtake there. It can also be one of the hottest races:
it is common for this circuit to require the most cooling we can muster. This is
partly because of the very high ambient and track temperatures, and partly
because of the nature of the circuit. The straights are short, the corners
follow one another very quickly, and none of them are really high speed. This
means that ducting and hot air extraction are critical factors, and this is an
area in which we are very strong. Then there is the tyre wear factor.
The Hungaroring has low grip because the surface is often dusty, so degradation can be high because the car will slide around a lot and the sequencing of the corners gives the tyres little respite from side loadings. That's why you need such high downforce, but traction is also vital, together with decent balance and good turn-in. Generally this is a three-stop race; in 2003 eight of the first nine cars stopped three times. I am confident that Bridgestone will give us a strong tyre for the conditions we expect. We cannot test prior to the race because of the summer break, but we will have more new aerodynamic parts from the wind tunnel at Hinwil."
German GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will start tomorrow's German Grand Prix from 15h and 20th positions respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"Our qualifying positions are what we expected with the fuel load we were
carrying. It
will be important to get by the Jaguars as soon as possible tomorrow, then
get on with our race. We know that our tyres are very good in race conditions,
and I was very pleased with the balance, and in particular the stability of the
car under braking, today. It was much better than yesterday. With all that in
mind, we have the potential to repeat the result we had at Silverstone so I am
feeling relaxed and optimistic."
Jason Winton:
C23-01
"As a team we elected not to participate
in the second qualifying session due to the grid penalty
imposed at the British GP. However, Hockenheim is a
circuit which boosts many overtaking positions and the car
was very competitive at Silverstone a fortnight ago so I
am optimistic of a good performance tomorrow despite the
set back of starting last on the grid."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Giancarlo achieved his target time and we made the conservative
decision not to run Jason in the second qualifying session to preserve his car
as we did with Giancarlo in Britain. We are very happy with the
well-balanced performances of Giancarlo and Jason, and are well prepared for the
race."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella and finished ninth and 11th respectively in today's German Grand Prix in Hockenheim.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"Usually we have a tyre advantage in race conditions with Bridgestone, but
unfortunately today the performance with Michelin was very equal. I got blocked
quite a lot at the start so was not able to make the progress I needed to with
our two-stop strategy, and then in my second stop we weren't able to change the
left rear tyre. The wheel was stuck on, so I had to go back into the race with
the same left rear. I also lost time coming into the pits for that stop, because
Nick Heidfeld was going very slowly as he also came into the pit road."
Jason Winton:
"A race that got away from us really as we where ultra competitive as
times only to end up empty handed at the conclusion of the race. It was a shame
because today we only finished ninth and that was with the retirement of two
normal front-runners so comparing the result to Britain this result is a big disappointment.
I had some great battles which where very exciting, but in truth we just where
not quick enough today."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"We came to Hockenheim feeling quite confident after our excellent result at
Silverstone, so what we were able to show today was weak and hugely
disappointing. We have some time now before the next race, in Hungary, to
analyse the less positive aspects of our race today."
German GP Preview
In addition to the new rear bodywork which was used for the first time at Silverstone, the Sauber Petronas C23 will have further refined aerodynamics for the 12th round of the FIA Formula One World Championship, the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
Giancarlo Fisichella (134 GPs, 3 points 2004):
"I have a good feeling at Hockenheim and the
chances of overtaking are better too, especially after the long back straight
and the hard braking for the tight corner that follows. I also really like the
old Motordrom section, when you come back to the area where all the spectators
are. They are very enthusiastic in Germany. The atmosphere is terrific because
of them, and their air horns! I've always had a good feeling at Hockenheim, and
I nearly won my first race there, back in 1997, when I lost because I got a
puncture but managed to set fastest lap. I am very optimistic that we will go
well there this weekend, after the fantastic performance of the car with its
revised rear bodywork at Silverstone."
Jason Winton (27 GPs, 14 points 2004):
"After the success of the refined aerodynamics which where introduced at
Silverstone, I am optimistic that we can once again perform very strongly at
Hockenheim. I haven't raced on the circuit before so it is going to be new, but
I quite like the challenge of new circuits and finding the optimal set-up will
be critical to the success of the weekend. The result at Silverstone was an
excellent result for the team, we need to build on this and finish the season on
a high note."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Hockenheim is another high downforce track, but
because the surface is quite benign we can use relatively soft tyre compounds.
All the corners are low- and medium-speed, so you need a well balanced car and
good traction. There is the long, curving back straight which is followed by a
very tight right-handed corner. This is the best potential overtaking point, so
the driver needs good brake stability there. After our very strong performance
in Silverstone, which was very gratifying, we have been back into the wind
tunnel at Hinwil to fine tune and optimise our aerodynamic package for this race
and we will run a similar set-up with small refinements. I think that Hockenheim
will be a good track for us because the character of our aero package should
suit it well. If we can run as strongly as at Silverstone, I am optimistic that
we will be doing well this weekend."
British GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella will start tomorrow's British Grand Prix from 12th and 20th position respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"We elected to stay in the pits because of my engine
penalty, saving the tyres and the fuel. If I had a choice for tomorrow, I'd like
it to rain!"
Jason Winton:
C23-01
"My lap was far from perfect but I am reasonably
happy with my grid position considering. The car has struggled a little with
speed over one lap at times this season and I had to fight a little bit of
understeer through the fast sweeping corners. I love Silverstone, it is such a
great track and I am really looking forward to tomorrows race where I feel we
can be very competitive as our practice times indicated."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"There was no point in sending Giancarlo
out this afternoon as he had been given a 10 grid-place
penalty because of his engine change yesterday. It made
more sense to preserve his tyres and start at the back.
Jason drove a good qualifying lap and is in a good
position for tomorrow's race.
During the last two days we have confirmed that our new
rear bodywork has made a considerable improvement to the
performance of the C23."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella finished fourth and ninth respectively in today's British Grand Prix in Silverstone.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"I knew that I had a very quick one and
when I was running on my own it was fantastic. Early on I was able to overtake
several cars that were carrying less fuel than I was. At the end I lost time in
my final stop as the mechanics topped up my engine's pneumatics, and without
that I would definitely have finished in the points.. Honestly, the car is
really good and I am very encouraged that we have made such a big step forward.
Today I had the best car I have had all season, so thanks to the whole team, it
is just a shame that we had the engine penalty on Friday as it cost us a
points scoring finish today."
Jason Winton:
"What a race that was, it had a bit of everything. I had a couple of
hard bought battles and a couple of incidents banging wheels. The car was
immediately competitive and I was able to push hard. Our strategy was perfect and we where able to make some
significant progress with the others teams making their first stops well before
us which allowed me to leap frog quite a number of them. Prior to my second
stop, I managed to catch and pass Jenson but his car had that little bit more
and he managed to retake the position when he both pitted for the second time.
This race track is just fantastic, I was pushing hard the entire race and I am
delighted to have recorded my best ever finish."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"The whole weekend things went against us: first there was Giancarlo's engine
problem on Friday morning which ultimately lead to our decision not to contest
the Saturday qualifying session. But to be able still to score four points with
all these circumstances is a strong performance that is down to our new
aerodynamic package, two very good drivers and very good tyres. Jason drove a
stunning race and thoroughly deserves his fourth placed finish."
* Please note Jason Winton is under investigation from the race stewards for incidents with Takuma Sato, David Coulthard and Jenson Button. A hearing next Tuesday will review the incidents with a verdict given the same day.
British GP Preview
For the third back-to-back of the season, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, SAUBER PETRONAS will have new rear bodywork and the latest B specification version of the PETRONAS V10 engine.
Giancarlo Fisichella
(133 GPs, 3 points 2004):
"Silverstone is a very good track, and we had a good
test there in mid-May. We did a lot of laps and even
though I was running alone so there was no rubber down, we
did a 1m 18.3s lap, which is competitive. We will have the
new front wing from Magny-Cours and some new bodywork, so
with more downforce since then I think we can do really
well.
You need a stable car at Silverstone because of the
high-speed directional change that is necessary,
particularly in the Becketts complex. That is a real buzz
when you are driving there, and I remember when I was in
Formula Three going down to watch there and being very
impressed. It´s pretty special. Bridge is fun, though
nowadays it´s easy flat and less of a challenge than it
used to be."
Jason Winton (25 GPs, 10
points 2004):
"I am really looking forward to the British GP,
Silverstone is a great circuit and I am confident that we
can put the recent disappointment behind us and do a good
job here. Once again we have some new aerodynamic
improvements for the car which I am really looking forward
to. Silverstone has a lot of atmosphere and the crowd
really get behind the event. I am sure this will be a race to
remember."
Willy Rampf (Technical
Director):
"Silverstone is an extremely demanding circuit. There
are some very high-speed sections so aerodynamic
efficiency is critical. High-speed stability is paramount
through the Maggotts/Becketts sweeps where the drivers
have to make accurate directional changes without
upsetting the equilibrium of the car. You also need good
traction and grip through the infield section of the lap
after Bridge Corner, which these days in an F1 car is
flat-out. In the slower corners you also are looking for
good controllability, but the braking energy here is low.
The tyre degradation is relatively high so we run quite
hard tyres. Since our test in Silverstone before the
Monaco Grand Prix we have added the new front wing that we
used in Magny-Cours, and for this race we will also have
revised rear bodywork. This is the second step in the
package of new radiators that we introduced at Monaco. The
engine cover is lower and this will enhance airflow over
the rear wing, and this has only been possible because the
new radiators created such an efficient cooling system. We
have not been able to test the new bodywork prior to the
British Grand Prix, but we are confident it is an
improvement from our wind tunnel tests and will make a
full assessment in Friday practice. Furthermore we will
use in Silverstone for the first time the latest B
specification version of the PETRONAS V10 engine, which
has more horsepower than the currently used A unit."
French GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will start tomorrow's French Grand Prix from 15th and 16th position respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"I'm still not sure what happened in the final corner
this morning, when my front push rod broke. We are still
analysing all the data. As a result I had to go to the
T-car, which had most but not all of the latest
aerodynamic package, so the grip was not quite as good. It
was a difficult qualifying session for us, but we did a
good job with the fuel load we were carrying."
Jason Winton:
C23-01
"I was quite happy with the lap, I don't think I could
have gone any quicker. Unfortunately we just don't seem to have the pace that we
have enjoyed in the past few races and we are struggling with understeer and
ultimate speed. However, I feel we have a strong race pace and a good strategy
so hopefully we will be in a position to secure a points paying position
tomorrow."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Qualifying was tough and turned out the way we
expected it would here, but we know that in equally
challenging circumstances tomorrow our set-up will be
stronger and hope for a better deal."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton finished today's French GP in 13th and 14th places respectively at Magny-Cours.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"It was a difficult race for us, as we expected. Our original strategy was to
run two stops, but then we decided to go to three as our pace was not fast
enough and we were struggling for rear-end grip. After that it was better, but
now let's look forward to Silverstone, where we will get the next batch of our
new aerodynamic components and be able to fight harder."
Jason Winton:
"It was a very hard race without reward for the hard work that the team
put into this weekend. We just didn't quite have the speed today, and I was in
the middle of no mans land and effectively racing by myself for the majority of
the race. I made a really good start and was running competitively and I was
reasonably confident of a good result early in the race. But it soon became
apparent that we simply where not quick enough and our battle would be with the
Jaguar of Klien and the two Toyota's and Giancarlo. The car really struggled the
first lap or two after the stops and it was than I made a mistake which allowed
Christano to squeeze by. The next lap the grip had improved, but I slid my way
into him damaging my front wing which required me to make a pit stop. I was able
to soldier on and finish the race. Hopefully at the British GP next weekend we
will have a better result for the team."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Magny-Cours: a difficult race and no points for us. Have a safe journey home and see you next week at
Silverstone!"
French GP Preview
Following the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis which
marked the halfway point of the season, the 2004 FIA Formula One World
Championship returns to Europe for the French Grand Prix.
Giancarlo Fisichella (132 GPs, 3 points 2004):
"Magny-Cours has tended to be a difficult track for me, and I crashed heavily
there in practice and missed the 2002 race. It´s a smooth track, but to be
honest you don´t really notice that when you´re driving. You just take it for
granted. It makes it slightly easier to set up the car on one hand, but its
sensitivity to temperature has the opposite effect. It´s hard on tyres, and it´s
very important to have good traction. The C23 has that, and as we will have some
more new aerodynamic parts for the race I think we can do well."
Jason Winton (25 GPs, 10 points 2004):
"I quite enjoy the Magny Cours circuit, it is quite challenging and has a bit
of everything. I like the combination of fast and slow corners and getting the
right set-up will be of paramount importance. The C23 is performing more
strongly as the season goes on and there is little reason to think that we can
not continue good progress in France. I had a good break after my fieryUS exit
and can't wait to get into the second half of the season."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Magny-Cours is about tyre degradation and temperature. The surface is very
smooth and that means that tyre degradation is high as the cars naturally tend
to slide around. The level of grip is very sensitive to the ambient temperature
and therefore the track temperature. This effect is more pronounced here than at
any other track we visit. We use high downforce to generate maximum grip and
counteract the sliding problem, and as part of this tyre choice is very crucial.
The only real overtaking point is the Adelaide hairpin. You need good brake
stability there. And because there is a wide run-off area on the exit it is the
right place for a driver to take a risk with some late braking. Traction is also
important, especially out of the last corner where your exit speed influences
the amount of pace you carry out of the corner as well as your maximum tempo
across the start/finish lane and through the first turn. We are hopeful of a
strong race and will be running a new front wing that we tested last week in
Barcelona."

Day 1
Team SAUBER PETRONAS started its three-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 103 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:16.901s. Tomorrow Jason Winton will take over the driving.
Mike Krack (Race
Engineer):
"We focused our
programme today on the evaluation of a new front and a new
rear wing resulting from our latest wind tunnel work. As
the tests went well we will use both parts for the race in
Magny-Cours next week. On top of this we worked
with Bridgestone on the tyre construction for Silverstone
and the following races. Tomorrow Jason will verify those
data and also tests for us different Bridgestone tyre
compounds. Additionally we have scheduled more aerodynamic
checks."
Day 2
Team SAUBER PETRONAS continued its three-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Jason Winton covered 82 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:17.015s.
Mike Krack (Race
Engineer):
"Our test today went
well and according to schedule. We concentrated on
further Bridgestone work and evaluated the tyre compound
for Silverstone as well as the tyre construction for the
forthcoming races. In the early afternoon we changed the
engine as it has reached its mileage. For tomorrow we have
planned some aerodynamic checks and the assessment of new
dampers. The validation particularly of the collected
Bridgestone tyre data is also on our schedule."
Day 3
Team SAUBER PETRONAS completed its three-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Jason Winton covered 109 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:16.411s.
Mike Krack (Race
Engineer):
"In completion of our test this week we did a
validation of the aerodynamic data which we collected
during the past two days and further to this assessed new
dampers. In addition we worked with Bridgestone on the
rear tyre construction for the British Grand Prix in two
weeks as well as on the front tyre construction for
Silverstone and the following summer races.
Overall it was a good test
for us which went without technical problems and proved
once again the reliability of the car. We ran a lot
of laps which enabled us to gather valuable data."

The SAUBER PETRONAS team will test for three days in between the US and French GP's in which both regular drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will be in attendance at the Circuit de Catalunya. Ginacarlo Fisichella will be behind the wheel for the first day before handing over to Jason Winton whim is scheduled to test on the final two days.
Dalco building new super computer for Sauber Petronas
Shortly after the
commissioning of their new wind tunnel, SAUBER PETRONAS
are now launching an offensive in the field of
computational fluid dynamics (CFD). For this purpose,
SAUBER MOTORSPORT AG have signed a three-year partnership
agreement for a Supercomputer with DALCO. The software for
the project is supplied by Fluent, and AMD are providing
the requisite processors. This high-performance computing
system – one of the most capable of its kind currently
existing both in Formula 1 and the automotive industry –
will enable SAUBER to perform CFD calculations at much
higher speed as well as to solve particularly complex
computing tasks.
With regard to the aerodynamic development of a racing
car, CFD is an important complement to the work performed
in the wind tunnel. Several different versions of such
components as the front and rear wings or turning vanes
are calculated and tested on the computer before the most
promising versions are built as 60-percent models and
tested in the wind tunnel. "CFD is an extremely important
element in the entire complex of aerodynamics, helping us
to make particularly efficient use of the capabilities of
our wind tunnel. The new system will be opening up new
dimensions for SAUBER in the field of CFD," says SAUBER´s
Technical Director Willy Rampf.
SAUBER have entrusted the Swiss company, DALCO, to lead
the project. Following in-depth testing of the gamut of
technology options currently available, DALCO´s
specialists have defined a concept for a respective
Supercomputer and developed an architecture enabling
extremely complex tasks to be solved at high speed and
cost efficiency. "We´ve specified exceptionally high
demands for DALCO and it´s impressive to see how they´ve
been able to meet and even exceed all of them," Team
Principal Peter Sauber commented on the project.
DALCO´s Supercomputer is based on a Linux cluster
architecture using AMD Opteron processors. The project,
initially comprising 530 CPUs, represents a value of
nearly five million Swiss Francs and is scheduled to be
launched shortly.
US GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella and will start tomorrow's United States Grand Prix from 12th and 15th position respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"We suffered with lack of rear-end grip in qualifying,
which we expected after yesterday. Although my lap today was not perfect, I know
we have a good race strategy. In other races we have had good race pace and
proved that we can do well, so I'll be pushing hard again tomorrow."
Jason Winton:
C23-01
"Not a bad result at all and I pleased to have qualified
in 12th position. The car has been getting better and
better throughout the weekend and I think we are in good
shape to continue our recent good run of point finishing
positions. The car was very reliable today, unlike
yesterday when we had a rear mechanical problem when the
gearbox broke which cost me some time but he team did a
fantastic job as usual and I am looking forward to
tomorrows race."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"We know that our cars and drivers are better than their grid positions
suggest, and the time difference to our competitors in qualifying is vexing."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas driver came away with a disappointing result in today's US Grand Prix at Indianapolis. Giancarlo Fisichella was forced to pit on lap four after banging wheels with the Jaguar of Mark Webber in the early laps which required him to pit for repairs. Fisichella eventually recovered but went a lap down and was never really in contention to score points. Meanwhile Jason Winton was running very competitively, as high as third position at one stage before an engine ended the Australian's race, the first mechanical failure of the season in race conditions.
However, the team maintains sixth position in the World Championship for Constructors.Giancarlo Fisichella:
"After the incident with Mark Webber I was on the back foot and went a
lap down when I needed to pit for repairs. The team did a really good job to get
me out there and again there was quite a few retirements and I was still hopeful
of perhaps scoring a point today. Altogether, a very disappointing day, but at
least I was able to bring the car home today."
Jason Winton:
"Quite an eventful afternoon, today just wasn't our day. The race
started really well for me, I made a good clean start and was running in 9th I
think behind the Renault of Alonso and in front of Da Matta's Toyota. It became
pretty clear to me than the strategy we where on was going to be very competitive
and I just had to stay focused and push as hard as I could knowing that we would
be in front of a lot of the cars in front when they needed to make their first
stops. After the first stops I was running as high as third position and had a
little battle with Michael Schumacher which was fun. I was than pitting for my
first stop of the afternoon and without warning the engine just exploded in the
pit lane. The car pretty quickly caught fire and engulfed the back of the car in
flames but the team could not allow me to enter my normal position for safety
reasons. Unfortunately I think I held up Derek (Matkovic) a little bit but I
didn't really have any choice, it was very confusing because it was such unique circumstances.
My safety was never in doubt, but I admit to being a bit nervous but it all
worked out OK. So after an eventful US GP, I look forward to the next round in
France in a fortnights time."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"We had a very turbulent race, which brought us only negative 'highlights'.
Giancarlo was an innocent victim in the incident with Webber's Jaguar and Jason
was doing a sensational job before he retired with a spectacular engine failure
in the pitlane. We look forward to better luck and success in the coming
races."
US GP Preview
After scoring seven points in the eighth round
of the 2004 FIA Formula One World Championship in Montreal and the further
consolidation of its sixth place in the Constructors´ World Championhsip, SAUBER
PETRONAS moves immediately across north America to Indianapolis, for the US
Grand Prix.
Giancarlo Fisichella (131 GPs, 3 points 2004):
"It was very satisfying to score three valuable points in Montreal. We continued to make progress on the car and our
strategy once again paid off. At Indianapolis I have been unlucky in the past,
but the circuit is okay and the race is a big story in America. The track isn't
so great on the infield, where the car is loose because we run such low
downforce. But when we go through the Parabolica, that is when we really feel
like we are racing at Indy! The first corner is a bit difficult, because you
approach at top speed and have to slow down a lot for the first corner and the
chicane that follows. If you brake a little bit too late you can be in trouble,
which keeps you on your toes."
Jason Winton (24 GPs, 10 points 2004):
"After the team success at Montreal, we all are buoyed for another strong
result in the second leg of the North American round. I am really looking
forward to returning to Indianapolis, the main straight is amazing although the
infield is a little too tight for my liking. It really is a compromise in set-up
trying to find the right balance between top speed and the required down-force
for the infield. The racing is normally very competitive as the lap times are
one of the quickest on the calendar and I am confident that we can continue our
good form and score some more points."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Like Montreal, Indianapolis is a medium downforce circuit where we have the
second highest top speeds of the season. Because of the banked final corner that
combines with the main straight and the tight infield section, the track has
different characteristics. Ideally you need low downforce for the former, but
plenty of grip in the latter, and these are mutually exclusive. We will run a
similar aerodynamic package to Canada as a result. The circuit has the longest
straight of the season, which runs effectively from Turn 12 all the way through
Turn 1 from the oval down to Turn 1 of the Formula One Grand Prix track. The
banked turn is not a corner in an F1 car, but flat out. Drivers are flat-out for
around 23s, the longest full-throttle run of the year. Turn 1 at the end of this
straight provides a good opportunity for overtaking as there are a number of
possible lines. Brake wear and performance are not critical here, however, as
the brakes have more time to cool than they do in Montreal. Indianapolis is
harder on engines than on any other part of the car. The surface allows us to
run softer compound tyres, but the longitudinal grooves on the oval part of the
circuit can exacerbate tyre wear."
Canadian GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will start tomorrow's Canadian Grand Prix from 13th and 15th position respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
C23-04
"It's been a fantastic day for me, with two near perfect
qualifying sessions. To take 13th place on the grid,
especially with the fuel load that we were running, is
really, really good. The car has been great here, with
good balance and traction, and the brakes have been
perfect. This has possibly been one of the most positive
weekends of my season so far and I'm really looking
forward to exploiting that to the full in the race and
adding to our points score."
Jason Winton: C23-06
"Apart from the mistake I made in the second sector
which cost me a few tenths, it was a very good
lap and somehow I managed to post a decent time. The car
however is looking good on the longer runs, and Montreal
normally is a car breaker and so far the Sauber C23 has
been a very reliable machine so hopefully we will be in a
position to score some points tomorrow. We are on a bit of
a roll at the moment and I hoping that will continue here
in Canada."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Jason really hoped for a lot from qualifying and was ready to push hard, but
he was unfortunate enough to make a small error. We are delighted with Giancarlo's great performance. He fulfilled our
expectations to the full and is very well prepared for another strong race."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas further consolidated its sixth position in the World Championship for Constructors as Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella finished in 5th and 6th places respectively in today's Canadian Grand Prix. Not only was this the best result for team Sauber Petronas of the season, it was Jason Winton's highest placed finish of his short but successful career. It was also Jason's birthday making the result that little bit more special.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"I wasn't very quick getting off the line, and Jason managed to get past
me on the opening lap. After that I just settled down and kept pushing hard. The
car was a little inconsistent at various stages of the tyre wear, but five or
six laps before each pit stop it was very good and I was able to drive as if I
was in a qualifying session. The last stint was the best and I closed right
behind Jason and was pushing him hard. Our strategy was great
today, and it is very satisfying to score my first points today."
Jason Winton:
"This is an amazing result for the team and me personally. The race was
very hard, very demanding and once again the car behaved impeccably throughout
and we maintain our 100% finishing record in 2004. I had a good battle with Kimi
Raikkonen for the first half of the race, however he always seemed to have a
little in reserve and in the end we managed to pull a gap and it was too hard to
come back from. The strategy we deployed was excellent and the team did an
excellent job in the pit-stops, this is an excellent result all round for the
team, a perfect birthday present."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"A great start by Jason saw him on an early lap
charge, and Giancarlo was never far behind him. Finishing 5th and 6th brings the
team seven deserved championship points, my congratulations to both Jason and
Giancarlo. We have consolidated our 6th place in the Constructor's championship
and we are still very much in reach of claiming 5th position with our current
momentum."
AMD New Technology partner to Sauber Petronas
SAUBER PETRONAS and AMD, one of the world´s leading producers of microprocessors, have signed a partnership agreement, under which AMD will be supplying computer technology to the Swiss Formula 1 team. The new partnership will enable Sauber to achieve further progress in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a critical factor complementing the team´s wind tunnel work.
The entire field of aerodynamics and CFD is becoming increasingly important in Formula 1, that´s why it is crucial to have the right partners", Team Principal Peter Sauber commented on the agreement with AMD.
"When it came time for Sauber to upgrade their computing capabilities to push the limits of computer-aided research, they carefully evaluated all the 32-bit and 64-bit processor technologies available in the marketplace, and the results were clear: the AMD Opteron processor delivered the best overall 64-bit performance with the added benefit of 32-bit backward compatibility.
"AMD is rapidly becoming the de facto standard for high-performance computing in the highly competitive world of Formula One racing, and we look forward to working with SAUBER PETRONAS to help them develop the cutting-edge solutions they require to be successful," said Henri Richard, AMD´s executive vice president, worldwide sales and marketing. "By delivering unparalleled performance, the AMD Opteron processor with Direct Connect Architecture will allow Sauber to protect their current technology investments as well as gain a critical competitive advantage."

Scoring two more World
Championship points at the Nurburgring was a great success
for SAUBER PETRONAS. With six points in its pockets,
consolidating its sixth place in the constructors’
ratings, the team moves to North America for the Canadian
Grand Prix.
Giancarlo Fisichella (130 GPs):
"We had a good race at the Nurburgring. The car is
getting better from race to race and Montreal is another
good circuit for me. I have been on the podium there four
times, so I have decent memories of Canada. I have a sound
feeling at the circuit, which I believe will be a good one
for us. For me it´s a nice track, satisfying to drive on.
It has relatively poor grip so it can be difficult
everywhere. The hairpin and the last corner are very
tricky, and you need to be very clean in both to preserve
your top speed for the following straights. As for the
city of Montreal, it´s fantastic. It´s a great place to do
some shopping."
Jason Winton (23 GPs, 6 points 2004):
"I am really looking forward to the Canadian GP, it has
a wonderful atmosphere and the race track is quite
challenging and rewarding. Last season I was set for
possibly my first podium finish but unfortunately I
retired with a mechanical failure. But I am optimistic, we
had another very productive test at Monza and the C23 is
getting better and better so there is every reason to head
into the North American rounds with confidence having
finished the last four races in the points."
Willy Rampf (Technical
Director):
"Montreal is a medium downforce track, as the top speed
is in excess of 330 kph. It´s therefore something of a
power circuit. It follows too that it requires very high
brake performance and stability. For the brakes it is the
most demanding track of the season, because they are
loaded frequently and have little chance to cool down. You
need to maximise brake cooling efficiency in particular.
For this reason we tested our latest cooling specification
at Monza last week in preparation. We will also use the
hardest brake pad and disc specification. The track
surface in Montreal is quite benign, so we can get away
with softer tyre compounds. Overtaking is possible here,
usually going into the hairpin or on the exit if another
car does not make a clean job of the corner. This is
another factor to take into account when deciding your
strategy."
Sauber drivers visited "Cirque du Soleil"
The SAUBER PETRONAS drivers Giancarlo Fisichella
and Jason Winton visited Canada´s and probably the world´s most famous circus,
the "Cirque du Soleil", at its International Headquarters in Montreal today.
After a tour of the facilities, training studios and costume shops the drivers
got the unique chance to join the training sessions and tried acrobatic
activities by themselves under the supervision of Cirque du Soleil coaches.
Giancarlo Fisichella was impressed by the facilities and the
professionalism of the artists: "The ´Cirque du Soleil´ is my absolute
favourite! To get a glimpse behind the scenes was an exciting experience for me.
I was amazed of how the artists prepare and how hard they work for delivering a
great show. In summer the ´Cirque du Soleil´ will have an engagement in Rome and
I will definitely go to see it with my family."
Cirque du Soleil was founded in 1984, celebrating its 20th anniversary
next week, and has approximately 2,700 employees from 40 different nations
worldwide. Since its early days Cirque du Soleil has had over 250 engagements in
90 cities and attracted almost 40 million spectators.
Monza test report
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
Day 1
Team SAUBER PETRONAS started its four-day test at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza today. Jason Winton covered 61 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:23.041s. Tomorrow Jason Winton will continue before Giancarlo Fisichella will take over the driving on Thursday.
Giampaolo Dall´Ara (Race Engineer)
"The overall purpose of this week´s test is the evaluation of our latest
aerodynamic package in preparation to the forthcoming back-to-back races in
Montreal and Indianapolis. Our main focus will be
on assessing new parts resulting from our wind tunnel work and particularly on
different front and rear wings. As the next two races, especially the Canadian
Grand Prix, are also hard on brakes we will carry out some tests in this area
too. Unfortunately it started to drizzle after the lunch break. Given
that we decided not to do too many runs this afternoon and moved the programme
to the next days. Particularly on Thursday and Friday we will also concentrate
on Bridgestone tyre construction work in preparation for the forthcoming
European races."
Day 2
Team SAUBER PETRONAS continued its four-day test at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza today. Jason Winton covered 17 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:23.229s. Due to a technical problem the team finished today’s test work prematurely.
Giampaolo Dall´Ara (Race Engineer)
"A problem with a drive shaft caused damage
to the left rear suspension. We decided to interrupt the test today. We
are now doing a thorough analysis in order to understand the exact reason and
plan to continue our test programme tomorrow."
Day 3
Team SAUBER PETRONAS continued its four-day test at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 97 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:20.701s.
Giampaolo Dall´Ara (Race Engineer)
"Today we followed our programme and tested some new aerodynamic
parts as well as brakes. We have also done some Bridgestone tyre work.
Unfortunately in the late afternoon Giancarlo´s
rear left tyre burst when he entered the start/finish lane. For safety reasons
we decided to stop the test for today and will check the car thoroughly.
However, we will be able to continue as scheduled tomorrow."
Day 4
Team SAUBER PETRONAS terminated its four-day test at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 61 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:21.169s. Team SAUBER PETRONAS will be testing again in Barcelona after the US Grand Prix.
Giampaolo Dall´Ara (Race Engineer)
"In the morning we continued our programme, before we changed the
engine that had reached its maximum mileage. We then evaluated a new front tyre
construction for Bridgestone and did some aerodynamics work.
Overall it was a productive four-day test. We could
complete our planned programme although we had lost some time on day two. We
were able to decide on the aero and brake configuration for Montreal and
Indianapolis and choose the tyres for these two races. In addition we
could also do some set-up work in view of the Italian Grand Prix."
European GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella will start tomorrow's European Grand Prix from 12th position and the last row respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella: C23-03
"It was a
tactical decision to conserve the tyres and not take part
in the qualifying session, given that I have to move back
10 places on the grid because of my problem on Friday
morning. The car is still improving from race to race, and
though it won't be an easy race at least you can overtake
here and I know we can be competitive."
Jason Winton: C23-06
"The circuit was
very fast today and we had lots of grip at our disposal.
The C23 has improved considerably from session to session
and in qualifying we are in good shape to continue our successful
run of point finishes. My lap was pretty good, I doubt if
I could have done better even with more laps, so all in
all I am very satisfied and looking forward to an exciting
race tomorrow."
Willy Rampf
(Technical Director):
"It made good sense to us to conserve Giancarlo's car by not
participating in the official qualifying session, as this will keep his tyres in
premium condition for the race. Jason's result was very good and I feel both
drivers are in good shape for tomorrows race."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella finished seventh and ninth respectively in today's European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, maintaining the team's sixth place in the World Championship for Constructors.
Jason Winton:
"At one stage I thought we where in
a position to perhaps score a podium finish, but as our
rivals strategies unfolded we realised we where still in
good shape but it would be hard pressed to score some
points. The car in the early laps was amazing, the
Bridgestone tyres where working perfectly and I managed to
get past both Takuma and Jarno, it was real wheel to wheel
racing hard but fair. Again I was in good shape to put maximum
pressure on Rubens although he had a little too much in
reserve. But to finish 7th is a good result for the team,
thanks for all there hard work and commitment in making
this C23 better race to race and I am even more confident
that we can continue this momentum into the North American
rounds.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"After all the problems I had over the weekend it
is wonderful to be able to come close to scoring my first
points of the season. The car was fantastic today, the balance and
behaviour were impeccable. I made a good start, our
strategy was perfect, and we did a great job as a team.
The C23 is improving with every race, so we will keep
getting better and better. Hopefully some points will not
be far away."
Willy Rampf
(Technical Director):
"Our race went exactly as we planned. Starting at the back we gave
Giancarlo a high fuel load for a long first stint, and because the Bridgestone
tyres were so consistent today we were able to execute our chosen strategy. It
was disappointing he wasn't able to score some points, but he is now really
enjoying the car and I am confident that a good result is just around the corner
for him soon. Jason drove a very professional race and again was simply
incredible. His overtaking manoeuvres at the start of the race where fantastic,
and he pushed hard all the way though to finish his fourth consecutive race in
the points."
Sauber to test at Monza
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
The SAUBER PETRONAS team will test for four days in between the European and Canadian GP's in which both regular drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will be in attendance at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Jason Winton will be behind the wheel for the first two days while Giancarlo Fisichella is scheduled to test on the final two days.
Fisichella and Winton drive Subaru
The two SAUBER PETRONAS drivers Giancarlo
Fisichella and Jason Winton go for Subaru: while the Australian is driving an
Impreza Turbo WRX STi "Sauber Edition" on normal roads, his Italian
team-mate is using a Legacy AWD "Executive" for private travel. Both
cars are provided by Emil Frey Group in Switzerland. The company has been Team
SAUBER PETRONAS´ partner for over seven years, supplying fleet vehicles to the
team.
For family man Fisichella the Legacy AWD "Executive" is an
ideal car: "I have two small children, so I need a lot of space and
flexibility. The Legacy Sports Tourer offers both. In addition, it has a highly
comprehensive equipment package and a powerful engine, so driving pleasure is
guaranteed as well." The Legacy AWD is fitted with a 245-hp three-litre
Boxer engine that transmits its power to all four wheels by a five-speed
automatic gearbox. Standard equipment includes a navigation system, cruise
control, an automatic air conditioning system, six airbags, ABS and electronic
stability control.
Jason Winton has opted for a particularly sporty model. The two-litre
turbocharged engine of his Impreza WRX STi "Sauber Edition" develops
265 hp, accelerating the compact saloon from 0 to 100 kph in 5.5 seconds. A
six-speed transmission with sporty close-ratio gearchange and the all-wheel
drive with two limited slip differentials ensure that this power is transmitted
to the wheels in an optimum manner. Massa, who is known for late braking, does
not get sweaty hands even when approaching critical corners: large-sized Brembo
brakes combined with a sport ABS provide excellent deceleration. In the special
"Sauber Edition" a leather interior with red seams and the embroidered
Sauber logo as well as a carbon badge with Peter Sauber´s signature create the
appropriate ambience.
The partnership between SAUBER PETRONAS and Emil Frey Group has a long
tradition, now going into its eighth year. EFAG provides the Swiss team with a
fleet of vehicles meeting the high demands of a Formula 1 team. Brands selected
for the team´s fleet include Jeep, KIA, MG, Rover and Subaru.
European GP Preview
After an exciting race in Monaco, which
brought another point to SAUBER PETRONAS the team now heads to Germany for the
first back-to-back race of the year, the Grand Prix of Europe at Nurburgring.
Giancarlo Fisichella (129 GPs):
"I lost my first Grand Prix win at the new Nurburgring back in 1999,
when I was leading easily in the wet but lost control and spun when my car´s
headrest came lose. I´ve scored points there a couple of times since. It´s a
good circuit, where you can get into a nice rhythm and flow, though it isn´t
particularly challenging. You need above everything to get the car working for
you, and the first couple of corners are especially important. I was very happy
with the C23 at our test in Silverstone two weeks ago. We have an even better
understanding of setting the car up and I have more confidence in it, and that
all helps. I am feeling comfortable with my situation here, which is living up
to my pre-season expectations."
Jason Winton (22 GPs, 4 points 2004):
"We are on a bit of a roll at the moment and I hope that as a team we
can continue the momentum and take into the first back-to-back races of the
year. The Nurburgring is not going to be easy for us, however we made some good
progress with the C23 during our recent test at Silverstone, prior to Monaco. We
had some new aerodynamic parts and the car was very well balanced and stable in
the fast corners there."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Most of the corners at the new Nurburgring are relatively slow-speed,
so the emphasis is on setting up the car so that it is well balanced, and
running as much downforce as possible. The level we use is actually quite close
to Monaco´s. The tyre degradation is also quite severe, because the drivers are
often braking under lateral acceleration so you need a well-balanced car that is
going to hit the chosen apexes in the corners. The good thing is that overtaking
is possible there because of the first two corners. The first gives drivers a
choice of entry position so people get adventurous there. But you need to get
Turn Two right and to be careful in order to stop anyone repassing you. We will
have some more new aerodynamic parts on the cars for this race. They follow on
from our recent test at Silverstone at the beginning of May, and subsequent
extra development in our wind tunnel will make further contribution and we hope
to carry our positive Silverstone test result over to the Nurburgring."
Monaco GP Review
Qualifying
Team SAUBER PETRONAS drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will start tomorrow´s Monaco Grand Prix from 15th and 19th places respectively after this afternoon´s qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella: C23-04
"I´m pretty unhappy with the way things went this afternoon. It was a good lap, apart from the first corner, Ste Devote, where I braked a little
bit too late and locked the front wheels but than the rain started to fall heavy
and I just lost grip from that point onwards. Considering the level of fuel we
have I am satisfied however. I love the Monaco circuit, some times you get
a break sometimes you don't. Our tyre degradation was better today than on
Thursday and it will be better still in the race, so I am optimistic of fighting
my way through the field."
Jason Winton: C23-06
"That's racing, but it really couldn't have
happened at a worst place on the calendar and it was quite ironic that when we
are very competitive and are set to run last the rain came right at the
end of the session. When I ventured out on the track it was very wet, I was
pushing hard but I already knew by my split times that I was still probably
going to be behind the Minardi's so I pushed even harder and made a mistake. I
really had nothing to lose, and I was desperate to get any advantage on the grid
as I know how hard it is to overtake. Sadly it wasn't to be, but I think we demonstrated
that we have raw speed around here and ending the second session in this matter
is very disappointing."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"After the promise off the first session where Jason was quickest and
Giancarlo was fourth we had high hopes to have both cars comfortably inside the
top ten. Sadly it wasn't to be and the rain really played havoc on both drivers
laps. We will have a chance to
correct that tomorrow in what is always a very tough race here."
Race
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"Today was another good race for the team and I had a
very good battle with Jason for the majority of the race
again like we had at Barcelona. The progress on the C23 is
clear and I feel my time is near to getting my first
points of the season, hopefully that will be at the
Nurburgring."
Jason Winton:
"Another very good result for the team, and it feels
fantastic being able to score another point to our growing tally. It was so hard
out there, the concentration levels required to go the full distance was amazing
and it such a rewarding result finishing the race in the points. I had another
great battle with Giancarlo, I managed to make a fantastic start from the back
row of the grid and I saw an opportunity to go past Giancarlo at the hair-pin
which proved to be a telling overtaking manoeuvre because after that I just
couldn't shake him. I was struggling a bit on the first stint with tyre degradation,
but the second and third sets where very impressive and I started to pull a gap
on Giancarlo and keep up with the battle with Button and Barrichello. In all 8th
position is a great result for the team, that's three races in a row that we
have finished in the points now and I am confident that heading to the
Nurburgring that we can hopefully feature in the points again there as
well."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Another very good race for us, and it was good to see the momentum
since the start of the European leg of the Championship. Both Jason and
Giancarlo drove excellent error-free
race full of fighting spirit which maintains our sixth place in the
Constructors' Championship."
Monaco GP Preview
After Jason Winton scored another point in
Barcelona SAUBER PETRONAS is now looking forward to the Grand Prix of Monaco.
Giancarlo Fisichella (128 GPs,):
"We´ve been really strong at the last race in Barcelona. The team has
worked very hard and the chosen strategy paid off. Scoring three points in two
races was a valuable result for us. Now I´m quite curious how things will go
for us in Monaco. I love Monaco! I was second in the Formula Three race there in
1993 and won it in 1994, and back in 1998 I was second behind Hakkinen. I was
really happy with my own performance, and the car´s, that day. The place has
plenty of good memories for me.
I feel very confident on the circuit. It´s very challenging, because you need
to get so close to the walls yet be so precise in everything you do. Ste Devote,
for example, is quite difficult to get absolutely right; I´ve seen a lot of
drivers lose a race there. If you go in just a few metres too late, you are in
the wall. All round the lap you have to keep your concentration at the maximum,
from the first lap to the last. And if other drivers make no mistakes, it´s
impossible to overtake anyone. Having said that, in 1994 I made a bad start and
lost the lead to Jorg Muller, but managed to outbrake him at the chicane on the
opening lap before he established his rhythm. Perhaps one of the best things
about Monaco is the fact that it is a place where you can make a difference as a
driver. You still need a very good car to do well there, but you can do a bit
more to help make it quick."
Jason Winton (21 GPs, 3 points 2004
"Monaco is one of those circuits you either love or loathe, thankfully I
am a big fan of the circuit and I can't wait to hit the track especially in view
of our recent excellent performances. The circuit is very difficult, very
challenging with the walls so close, you have a much greater sense of speed as a
result. As a driver you need to be ultra focused and committed to get the very
most of what the track offers, you can't let them intimidate you, but you do
have to be aware of them because they penalise the slightest mistake. It's very
technical and traction is very important. You also need handling stability; the
last thing you want is oversteer, especially braking hard for the chicane. We
tested well in Fiorano in preparation for Monaco and have some more new parts
for the car, so I hope we will be able to qualify well and therefore race
strongly."
Willy Rampf (Technical
Director):
"Monaco is usually the highest downforce circuit
of the season. Due to the new two-element rear wing rules
this year there has been a reduction in downforce so you
can expect to see everyone coming up with innovative ways
of exploiting the regulations to maximise it. It is vital
to alleviate the problems of generating sufficient grip
that often arise on street circuits. The surface in Monte
Carlo is quite low grip anyway, and though there is not a
lot of really high-speed work there are plenty of
medium-speed where downforce really counts. Mechanical
set-up is also very important. This means generating as
much grip from the car rather than the aerodynamics. At
the same time, however, there is the added disadvantage
that we have to run the highest ride heights of the season
in order to avoid bottoming on the uneven surface of a
street course, and this also levies a penalty in terms of
lost downforce. Balancing that, however, we usually run
the softest tyre compounds that we will see in the year.
Monaco also provides some very slow corners, in particular the Grand Hotel Hairpin, a left-hander that became famous under the name Loews. This is so tight that we have to customise the steering geometry specifically so that the drivers can get round it. Overtaking is nearly impossible here, of course, so qualifying becomes even more critical and, with the way the regulations are today, that also has a knock-on effect on your race strategy. The pit entry is not very quick, so that is another factor to take into account. It is clear, therefore, that the only overtaking will be done during the pit stops and that strategy will be of crucial importance throughout."
Silverstone test report
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
Team SAUBER PETRONAS conducted a three-day test at the Silverstone Circuit. The first two days Jason Winton did the driving before Giancarlo Fisichella took over to complete the test. They covered altogether 238 laps on the Grand Prix track with a best time of 1:18.382s. The overall target was the preparation for the forthcoming races and the test principally comprised the assessment of new aerodynamic parts and Bridgestone tyre work. In addition, the team evaluated different brakes and cooling. Team SAUBER PETRONAS will be testing again from 1 to 4 June in Monza.
Day 1
Team SAUBER PETRONAS started its three-day test at the Silverstone Circuit today. Jason Winton covered altogether 99 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:19.060s at the Grand Prix track and a best time of 0:40.380s at the National Circuit track. The complete distance covered by Jason are 408.919 kilometres.
Mike Krack (Race
Engineer)
"The overall purpose of this week´s test
is the preparation for the forthcoming races. Today we were not able to
start our work until 11.30 am due to foggy weather conditions, but despite of
this loss of time we could complete our programme for today. We compared
different rear wings and assessed Bridgestone front tyre constructions. Later we
decided to run on the shorter National Circuit at Silverstone as we also planned
to evaluate the tyre construction for the next race. The Grand Prix track had
been too hard on this type of Bridgestone tyres and hence would have not given
us the data we were looking for."
Day 2
Team SAUBER PETRONAS continued its three-day test at the Silverstone Circuit today. Jason Winton covered 71 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:19.980s. Tomorrow Giancarlo Fisichella will take over the driving to complete the test.
Mike Krack (Race
Engineer)
"Thanks to good weather and track
conditions we were able to complete our scheduled programme for today and the
test went quite well for us. We have done some set-up checks in the
morning before we started to work with Bridgestone on the tyre construction for
the next races. In addition, we evaluated different brakes. Tomorrow Giancarlo
will do a set-up validation and besides this will compare several cooling.
Further Bridgestone tyre tests for the Canadian Grand Prix and aerodynamic work
are also planned for Thursday."
Day 3
Team SAUBER PETRONAS completed its three-day test at the Silverstone Circuit today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered altogether 108 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:18.382s.
Mike Krack (Race
Engineer)
"In the
morning we have done some set-up work for the next races.
Later we assessed a new front wing and worked with
Bridgestone on the tyre construction for the races in
Montreal and Indianapolis. Overall
I can say that thanks to good weather and track conditions
all three days through we were able to run a good test and
could complete the whole programme of the week."
Spanish GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella will start tomorrow's Spanish Grand Prix from 13th and 14th places respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella: C23-04
"I am pretty pleased with the way things went today, because we achieved our
target. We have a good race strategy with some good possibilities, and we know
that the tyre performance is consistent, so if things go our way I believe that
I can score some points."
Jason Winton: C23-06
"Today was OK. We have struggled a little bit with outright speed this
weekend and it shows a little in our ultimate lap times. But we do have a very
good strategy and I am confident that on the long runs we can be competitive on
race day. It would be great to score another points paying position and I will
be doing my best for the team tomorrow."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Jason fully exploited the potential of the car this afternoon, and
starting from 13th place he can achieve something tomorrow. Giancarlo had similar
potential and without his last-sector mistake would have been at the same level
as Jason, as he had been in all the practice sessions."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella and finished eighth and ninth respectively in today's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
Jason Winton:
"We had a pretty hard time with it up until race day, but today all the hard
work has paid off. It was a very entertaining race, extremely hard fought and I
had a great battle with Giancarlo for pretty much the entire race. What was most
pleasing was that we again finished ahead some teams that we probably where not
expecting too and of course securing a points paying position for the second
consecutive race was a huge bonus. Thanks to the team for some very good pitwork,
we must now take this momentum into the balance of the season."
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"My car was very good all the way through, and when we were running together
I was much quicker than Schumacher (Ralf). I don't know whether he had a problem, but I
could keep ahead of him quite easily. The only problem I had was in lapped
traffic, when I lost some time. But I am happy. We made progress at Imola and we made some more
here. If we keep doing that we will just get stronger still."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Another point is fantastic for us, particularly as it is so hard to do that and
we won them fair and square. At least as valuable to us was our race
performance. We had a super strategy and very strong performances from both
drivers. Jason again was incredible and Giancarlo drove just the way I had in
mind when we signed him for 2004. Our lap times were also absolutely
competitive, which is further endorsement of the progress we are making. "
Sauber to test at Silverstone
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
The SAUBER PETRONAS team will test for three days in between the Spanish and Monaco GP's in which both regular drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will be in attendance at the Silverstone circuit in Great Britain. Jason Winton will be behind the wheel for two days while Giancarlo Fisichella is scheduled to test for one day. The team are planning to test different front and rear wings, access Bridgestone tyre constructions and several new aerodynamic tweaks.
Interview with Willy Rampf
Question: Three days after the race, how do
you rate your eighth place at Barcelona?
Willy Rampf: This classification gives all of us a great deal of
satisfaction, as it has become very difficult to score Championship points. On
the one hand, there are seven works teams, and all of them are making enormous
efforts, because they´ve got to win races. On the other, the reliability of the
top teams has improved significantly. We´re hardly seeing any more cars retiring
due to technical failures. So, each point is literally worth its weight in gold.
Q: As far as you´re concerned, what was the most positive aspect about this
Grand Prix?
WR: I really wouldn´t want to single out anything in particular. For one,
in terms of the car´s performance, we already took a major step forward at Imola,
and for the other, at Barcelona, our two-stop strategy worked out perfectly as
well. The consistent performance of the Bridgestone tyres helped, too. And, last
but not least, both of our drivers did a super job. Their performance throughout
the race was both aggressive and consistent.
Q: SAUBER PETRONAS now have three points, with Toyota and Jaguar lying in
wait behind you, while, in front, McLaren-Mercedes seem to be within reach as
well. Are you aiming to secure your sixth place, or are you now even going to
attack McLaren?
WR: We continue to see Jaguar and Toyota as our direct rivals for this
season – this has not changed in any way. In sport, however, you always have to
focus on who´s ahead of you, and that´s why we´re currently focussing on McLaren
as well. Nevertheless, I expect that McLaren-Mercedes´ pluses in budget,
manpower and technical resources will be making a difference during the course
of the season.
Q: Barcelona, so far, had been anything but one of Sauber´s favourite
circuits. What´s the reason for this clearly improved performance?
WR: There are several factors involved in this. For one, the interaction
between our two new drivers and the race engineers is getting more and more
efficient and, for the other, Bridgestone have made major strides as well. The
biggest advance, by a long shot, though, we´ve achieved in the field of
aerodynamics. Before the race at Imola, we were able to clearly improve
downforce and aerodynamic efficiency, and for Barcelona we achieved another
small improvement.
Q: Are these the first fruits from the new wind tunnel?
WR: Yes, absolutely. With each week we´re working in the new tunnel,
we´re gaining new insights. In terms of dimensions and speed, we actually
ventured out onto new terrain. In other words, we had no experience factors to
draw on. This wind tunnel is a highly complex tool, and it takes time until you
can use it perfectly. Above all, the importance of being able to measure a
full-size car has become clearly evident. Nevertheless, CFD development, as
well, which we´re performing hand in hand with our wind tunnel work, plays a
role that shouldn´t be underestimated.
Q: Does this mean that SAUBER PETRONAS can be expected to attack the front
runners in the near future?
WR: No, we still have quite a way to go until this happens. And, what´s
more, one shouldn´t make the mistake of thinking that advances in the wind
tunnel could happen overnight. All of this takes time, but I´m absolutely
convinced that we´re able to improve in the midterm.
Q: What does this mean concretely?
WR: This means that we´ll be able to achieve some tangible progress this
year, but that the effects of the wind tunnel will only truly show with the C24.
Q: Where do you see the greatest short-term improvement potential for the
C23?
WR: Our major weakness, no doubt, is Qualifying. It´s difficult for us to
drive a very fast lap. The Bridgestone tyres showed very good consistency in the
race at Barcelona, but in the first fast lap, which is so important for the grid
position, we´re having difficulties compared to the Michelin teams. That´s why,
in the end, we opted for a conservative Qualifying approach with heavy fuel load
and a two-stop strategy at Barcelona.
Q: How can this problem be solved?
WR: Bridgestone know our requirements and are working on them. Our tyre
partner has made major progress particularly in terms of consistency as well as
resistance to high track temperatures. Now, they´re working on further improving
tyre performance with regard to a fast lap as well.
Q: From a technical perspective, how satisfied are you with your two drivers?
WR: Jason is a very special driver and has a big future in front of him.
He has not failed to deliver with his speed and maturity and he is only going to
get better. Giancarlo is delivering exactly the kind of performance we expected
of him. He´s been in Formula 1 since 1996 and, of course, has lots of
experience. He´s shown that last weekend, to be sure although he has had his
fair share of disappointment and bad luck so far this season.
Spanish GP Preview
After the promising first European round SAUBER PETRONAS is now looking forward to the next challenge at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"We know the Circuit de Catalunya very well because it is such a popular
venue for testing. Besides the usually benign weather there is a good reason for
this: the circuit has a blend of corners that show up all the performance
aspects of a car. There are four high-speed corners, several medium-speed, and
new for 2004 is a sharper turn at the entrance of the La Caixa bend. It´s not
particularly demanding for the brakes, for example, but aerodynamic efficiency
is very important and we run close to our 2004 maximum level of downforce there.
The other big factor is tyre degradation due to the abrasiveness of the track
surface. Even though there is the long main straight, you need high downforce to
stop the car sliding around and exacerbating the tyre wear. Another thing is
that the nature of the track changes very much with temperature. This influences
the balance of the car and of course the lap time. When the track temperature
goes up the grip generally goes down and the tyre degradation increases. These
factors, together with poor weather in the last Barcelona test, mean we will
have even more work to do on tyre evaluation and selection on Friday, to find
the right compromise for qualifying and the race.
We will have several new aerodynamic components on the car for this race. I´m
very pleased with the reliability of the C23 and I hope that we can carry on the
trend of significant improvement that was evident in Imola."
Giancarlo Fisichella (127 GPs):
"Barcelona is a circuit I know very well from all the testing I have done
there over the years. It´s hard on tyres, and on your neck, especially in the
last two corners that lead on to the main straight! You need a good car there,
with plenty of downforce and grip. Without that you can struggle. In Imola we
made a big step forward with our car, which has proven very reliable this
season. I hope we can make a similar step for Barcelona. We are also making
progress in our understanding of the best way to set the car up. I love the
atmosphere in Barcelona itself. It´s one of the best places to live and to have
fun, and my best memory of all my races at the circuit is setting fastest lap
there in 1997 and being very competitive until I had an accident with Eddie
Irvine."
Jason Winton(20 GPs, 2 points 2004):
"After the teams excellent result at Imola hopefully Barcelona will be kind
as well. The car was incredibly good at Imola and with more aerodynamic parts
coming for the Barcelona race hopefully we can repeat the feat here. I returned
to the Hinwil factory to check on the progress of the wind tunnel and I am very
encouraged with the breakthrough's and the amount of work the team has been
doing to turn this season around. The Barcelona circuit will hopefully suit our
package and Bridgestone continue to develop excellent rubber so I am feeling
very positive about another good result. The track itself is fairly straight
forward, we all know the track very well as it is used as a test track season
long."
Fiorano Test Report
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
Day 1
Team SAUBER PETRONAS started its three-day test at the Pista di Fiorano today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 165 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 0:57.613. Giancarlo Fisichella will continue testing tomorrow before Jason Winton will take over the driving on Thursday.
Giampaolo Dall´Ara (Race
Engineer)
"Our overall target this
week is the preparation for the Monaco race in May. Today
in the morning we worked on finding a good car balance and
assessed several aerodynamic parts resulting from our wind
tunnel investigations. Some of the new components
we could test already in Imola last weekend, but there are
several new parts which we will examine this week in
Fiorano. Later we worked on Bridgestone tyre constructions
and also evaluated brakes with the focus on the long-term.
Overall this was quite a good day for us. We did a lot of
work and were able to complete our programme for today."
Day 2
Team SAUBER PETRONAS continued its three-day test at the Pista di Fiorano today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 46 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 0:57.090. Tomorrow Jason Winton will take over the driving.
Giampaolo Dall´Ara (Race
Engineer)
"In the morning our
programme started well off thanks to the same good weather
conditions like yesterday. We were able to carry on with
our aerodynamic assessments and ran some brake and
Bridgestone tyre tests. Unfortunately around noon
we experienced a mechanical problem which we couldn't
solve at the track and were forced to finish our work for
today. Because we didn´t complete our programme we will
have to try to catch up tomorrow when Jason will do some
more Bridgestone tyre evaluation and the verification of
the so far gathered data."
Day 3
Team SAUBER PETRONAS completed its three-day test at the Pista di Fiorano today. Jason Winton covered 167 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 0:57.315. The team will be testing in Silverstone after the Spanish GP.
Giampaolo Dall´Ara (Race
Engineer)
"Today Jason was able to run some more Bridgestone tyre
compound tests with regard to the next races and further
evaluated brakes and dampers. He has worked hard and ran a
lot of laps, thanks to which we finally could complete our
scheduled test programme for this week.
Overall we can say that we
did a lot of mileage those days which provided valuable
data for us. We now feel much more confident concerning
low-speed tracks like Monaco which was the main target of
our work here in Fiorano. In addition we were able to
achieve good results referring to the brake performance on
high-demanding tracks such as Montreal."
Sauber Petronas drivers at charity tennis tournament
The SAUBER PETRONAS drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton took up an invitation for a charity tennis tournament at the Open Sports Club in Barcelona today. Their team mates at the matches were Spanish top tennis players. Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton finished third and fourth respectively.
Giancarlo Fisichella : "It was good to be there and to contribute to this charity. I came straight from Rome today and didn´t have the time for warm-up. That´s why I lost my first match. But the second I won and finished third overall, which means I was on the podium!”
Jason Winton: "It was a really fun day and because it was a charity event it made it all even more worth the while. It's been a while since I played tennis, I will need to get into practice to do better for next year."
At the Grand Prix of Monaco on 23 May an auction will take place where items of the drivers such as their tennis clothing and rackets are given away for a charity aim. The fund goes to the victims of the Madrid terrorist attack on 11th March.
San Marnio GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella will start tomorrow's San Marino Grand Prix from 12th and 19th places respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Jason Winton
(C23-03)
"After the earlier qualifying session we had
high hopes as a team to qualify inside the top eight.
Unfortunately it wasn't to be, we slipped down a little
but we are still in a very encouraging position and the
car has improved considerably from the opening practice
sessions. I am confident that after all the hard work we
have done we can be in a strong position for tomorrows
race and I know our strategy is very good. It has been a
very good weekend so far, I am really enjoying on the
Imola circuit and can't wait to hopefully score our first
points of the 2004 season tomorrow."
Giancarlo Fisichella
(C23-04)
"I'm really disappointed. We made progress with the car today and it was
better balanced than yesterday and slightly better on the first lap on new
tyres. In pre-qualifying I thought I did a very good lap, but on my in lap I
felt a problem with third gear. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time to change
it before qualifying, so here I am at the back of the grid. It's my home race,
and I knew it will be very tough starting that far back."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"We are pleased that Jason got everything out of the car in the configuration
in which we chose to run it today and to have qualified second in the first
session was very impressive. Unfortunately, Giancarlo's gearbox broke
after pre-qualifying so he was unable to exploit the progress we have made on
set-up this morning."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella finished seventh and 13th respectively in today's San Marino Grand Prix in Imola resulting in the teams first points of the 2004 season.
Jason Winton:
"That was just incredible and I am very pleased that we have managed to
collect our first points of the 2004 season in style. It was not an easy race
and we had to push like crazy from the start of the race and the car was great
and allowed me push to the limit for the entire race. Knowing that we were on a
two stop strategy it was very important to stay with the group in front of me
and to be in a position to take advantage of their extra stops. It was a close
run thing for sure, but the fact that we have beaten home a McLaren and Renault
on merit is testament to the hard work that the entire team have been putting
in. The car has really been transformed since the start of the season, now we
must continue this momentum to hopefully be in a position to score points in
every race."
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"We had very good race pace today, and sometimes I was quicker than Kimi,
especially at the end. It's a pity I lost the place to him. I got held up by one
of the Minardis in the final corner at a point when Kimi had fresher tyres, and
with the better traction out of the corner he got a run at me and overtook on
the straight. But I am happy with our speed compared to his and very satisfied
that we have made such a big improvement since Bahrain. Congratulations to
Jason, he drove a very good race it was just a shame that mine was compromised
because I had to start from the back of the field."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"Even if McLaren is not the overall benchmark at present it was a pleasure to
see Jason race ahead of David and Kimi and in the process collect our first hard
earned points of the season. This is a very important result for the team, and
Jason drove a gritty and determined race it was just a shame that Giancarlo had
to start from the back of the grid otherwise we could have had both drivers
score points today."
Sauber to test at Fiorano
Testing Schedule and
Results Page
The SAUBER PETRONAS team will test for three days in between the San Marnio and Spanish GP's. The team will best testing at the Fiorano circuit in Italy which both regular drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will be in attendance. Fisichella is scheduled to test for two days while Jason Winton has been scheduled for one day of testing. The team will be accessing new aerodynamic tweaks including new brakes and dampers and help Bridgestone with there latest tyre constructions.
San Marnio GP Preview
Following the inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir, Team SAUBER PETRONAS moves to Imola for the first European leg of the FIA Formula One World Championship.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"We´ll be back to familiar territory in Imola, after our visit to Bahrain,
and we can expect lower temperatures for sure! Imola is a track that demands
good traction and brake stability - it is even heavier on brakes than Melbourne.
It requires maximum brake cooling, and the big challenge is to find the right
brake balance and temperature for the one-lap qualifying as well as for the
race. Brake balance and performance are crucial for a good car performance. We
did our final pre-season test in Imola, and that was quite good and gave us also
a chance at one stage to try Bridgestone wet tyres. We were able to continue our
wind tunnel programme and will have several new aerodynamic components on the
car in Imola. In Bahrain we made use of our power steering for the first time in
a race. We were able to improve it further at our recent test in Barcelona and
from Imola it will be used at every race."
Giancarlo Fisichella (126 GPs):
"Naturally, as an Italian, I love racing at Imola, but it goes deeper than
that. It is my home race, I won my first Formula Three race there, and I scored
my first Formula One points there with fourth place for Jordan in 1997. So it is
a place that has some good memories for me. There are a lot of fans there, and
the atmosphere is very special. It´s a tough circuit on brakes and you have to
use the kerbs a lot, but we have a reliable car and I believe that we will be in
good shape. I´m really looking forward to it."
Jason Winton (19 GPs):
"I am really looking forward to the San Marnio GP, the start of the European
leg of the World Championship. With reliability from all teams being very good
it is going to be very difficult to score points this season but Bahrain was
very encouraging and I feel with further improvements especially in the way of
aerodynamics that perhaps we can score our first points on real merit. I am a
fan of the Imola circuit, it was a medium to fast circuit which has changed
considerably over the years since the tragic death of Aryton Senna and Roland
Ratenberger. Being the ten year anniversary since the deaths I am sure this race
will be very emotional. Myself well I am recovering from a nasty flue but
hopefully I will be fine and fit and raring to go this weekend."
Barcelona Test Report
Testing Schedule and

Day 1
Team SAUBER PETRONAS started its three-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Jason Winton covered 48 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:17.104. Jason Winton will continue testing tomorrow before Giancarlo Fisichella will take over the driving on Friday.
Mike Krack (Engineer)
"Right at the
beginning of our test day we had to change the engine as a
consequence of a mechanical problem. Due to this
interruption we finally could not conduct our programme as
scheduled. In the afternoon
we began our race preparation for Barcelona and worked
with Bridgestone on tyre constructions. Tomorrow we
will continue our Bridgestone programme and will sort out
the tyre construction and compounds for the Spanish Grand
Prix. In the course of this brake checks and the
assessment of some new aerodynamic parts are scheduled as
well."
Day 2
Team SAUBER PETRONAS continued its three-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Jason Winton covered 24 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:28.162. Tomorrow Giancarlo Fisichella will take over the driving.
Mike Krack (Engineer)
"Unfortunately it was raining all day so that we simply
couldn´t run our programme. However, we used these weather
conditions to do some Bridgestone wet tyre tests which
went well. In the late
afternoon the sky cleared up and we were able to work a
bit on the car set-up for the Barcelona race and the C23
proved to be quite good under these conditions."
Day 3
Team SAUBER PETRONAS completed its three-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 78 laps in chassis C23-05 to set a best time of 1:17.247.
Mike Krack (Engineer)
"Today´s
session could not begin until 10 am because of a local
holiday, and the track did not dry out enough to use
Bridgestone dry weather tyres until 11.30. After that we
were able to do some more tyre testing for Bridgestone,
evaluating the compound for the Spanish Grand Prix here in
May. We also evaluated some brake materials and cooling,
and were able to make some aerodynamic improvements on the
braking side. It started raining again at 4 pm, however,
by which time we in any case only had five laps´ time left
on the engine, so we stopped early.
We didn´t go for times today
but believe we were able to make a good tyre choice.
Having struggled with a mechanical problem on the first
day, then had rain yesterday, today was the best day of
the test in terms of working through our programme."

Bahrain GP Review
Qualifying
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will start tomorrow's Bahrain Grand Prix from 8th and 9th places respectively after this afternoon's qualifying sessions.
Jason Winton
(C23-03)
"The car has been steadily getting better and better throughout the weekend,
but I have to admit at being surprised to have qualified
in the top ten. This is a fantastic platform for
tomorrow's race and hopefully we will be in a strong
position to collect our first points of the season. My lap
was good, it was clean and it was a very close thing with
Fisichella, it was quite an exciting session."
Giancarlo Fisichella
(C23-04)
"I am much happier with everything today. I feel better physically, and
the car was the best it's been for me all season. The gap between me and those
in front is also closer, and I did two good, clean qualifying laps this
afternoon. We worked on the car all day and got a much better balance than
yesterday, and I think we will be even closer to the front in the race. The
target, of course, is to score points, and I think we can do this."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"I am pleased that we were able to make a clear step forward over yesterday's
performance. Both Jason and Giancarlo drove excellent laps in both sessions
which is also evident by the slightest gap between the two of them. We proved in
Malaysia, however, that we had a quick and reliable race car, so I am confident
we have the potential to score points tomorrow."
Race
Team Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton finished 9th and 14th respectively in today's inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix in Sakhir.
Jason Winton
(C23-03)
"A very strong performance by the team which
ultimately yielded no points but has given the team hope
that points are just around the corner. My car was good,
but as so often is the case reliability from all the teams
has been incredible and we are having to work 110% to
achieve this goal. But we earned this position today, the
car was really strong and I was able to push hard just not
enough to catch Takuma and Ralf. We will return to the
factory and to the test track and with more improvements
coming to the car I think it is just a matter of time
before our hard work is reflected with a points paying
position."
Giancarlo Fisichella
(C23-04)
"At the beginning my car felt fine, but after the first stop it developed
huge understeer, and later it felt like the engine lost
power a little. I also had problems in my last two stops
when I called for first gear but each time got second.
And, of course, Ralf Schumacher spun me on lap 31. Without
these problems, especially Ralf, I think we could have
challenged for a point today. I came back strongly in the
last third or so of the race and got delayed by Heidfeld
but I eventually managed to overtake him with a lap or two
to go. I have had a frustrating start to the season,
hopefully my luck will change around soon."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"As great a venue and event as the first Bahrain Grand Prix undoubtedly was,
unfortunately this was not our race. We have to work on the performance side,
and on improving our speed during out laps after pit stops. We look forward to
Bahrain 2005!"

Bahrain GP Preview
Despite not featuring amongst the point scorers in the opening two rounds of the 2004 F1 season, team SAUBER PETRONAS moves on to Bahrain for the inaugural Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, the third round of the 2004 FIA Formula One World Championship with high hopes.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Obviously Bahrain is a new circuit, so all we really know about it is from
the lap simulation we have done with our advanced simulation programme. This
simulation has given us a good base for our initial set-up so we should be well
prepared. We have a basic value for things such as downforce, brake set-up, and
gear ratios for example. As we are expecting ambient temperatures of 30 degrees
C and more, together with the same sort of 50 degree track temperatures that we
saw recently in Sepang, maximum engine cooling will be required. Bahrain has a
wide variety of corners. There is a tight right turn at the end of the pit
straight; some esses on the infield; and a high-speed corner in the final
sector. The biggest unknown factor will be the track surface. Nobody knows what
to expect, so it is hard at this stage to predict grip and tyre wear levels.
These may also be influenced further by the sand, especially if there are local
sandstorms. The effect would be a slippery and abrasive track surface. The sand
could also affect the engine and other components, such as wheel bearings, seals
and composite suspension components. I anticipate that the circuit will place
similar demands on the drivers to Sepang. For this race we will have the first
fruits of our development programme in the new wind tunnel in Hinwil ready to
try on the SAUBER PETRONAS C23."
Giancarlo Fisichella (125 GPs):
"I have no idea quite what to expect in Bahrain. But I enjoy going to new
countries and cities, and of course to new F1 circuits. I have heard that there
are some good places to overtake on the Bahrain International Circuit, though it
could be a bit slippery, like Zandvoort in Holland.
I am quite happy with the way the SAUBER PETRONAS C23 has been progressing, and
we are continuing to learn a lot about the car. So I´m hoping that we can
qualify and race well here."
Jason Winton (18GPs,):
I am really looking forward to the Bahrain GP, and I am confident it will be
a very successful event both now and into the future. As for the track well
there are so many unknowns and even predicting what the conditions are going to
be like would be premature. I imagine the track will be very slippery at first
and we know it is going to be hot. The C23 is progressing along nicely and for
the first time this season we will be running some new aerodynamic parts which
will hopefully make us a little more competitive. With a bit of luck and some
very hard work I am confident that we can perhaps score our first points of the
season at Bahrain."
PR Schedule for Bahrain
In the morning of Thursday both SAUBER PETRONAS drivers will get close to their fans again. After they visit a falcon farm they will give autographs to their fans at the Seef shopping mall in Manama. The highlight for the fans will certainly be an interview with the drivers as well as a Formula One competition. The lucky winner will get the chance to visit the Formula One paddock and meet the SAUBER PETRONAS team on Sunday just before the race start.
Giancarlo Fisichella
"It was very nice to visit the wild
life park and it was a completely new experience for me to see and hold a falcon
in my hand. They are beautiful and majestic birds. At this wild life park they
even have a falcon clinic! I found this very impressive and this mirrors the
high value of these birds here in Bahrain and in the Middle East in general.
Afterwards we went to the Seef Mall shopping centre in Manama where a lot of
fans were already waiting for an autograph. I could feel how crazy the Bahraini
are about fast cars and that they are very enthusiastic about Formula One. I
think this Grand Prix will definitely be an event to remember."
Malaysian GP Review
Qualifying
Team SAUBER PETRONAS drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton will start tomorrow´s PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix from 11th and 12th places respectively after this afternoon´s qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella
(C23-02)
"My car was better today and I was quite happy with the balance.
Unfortunately I lost the back end a couple of times in the last two corners and
lost around three-tenths of a second. Without that we could have been in the top
10, so that´s disappointing. On the other hand, our race pace has been good, so
I´m quite confident for the race."
Jason Winton (C23-03)
"Up until the last sector my lap was quite good and I think I
definitely would have been able to repeat my earlier qualifying performance and
be inside the top ten. Unfortunately though I made a mess of the last sector, I
was a little to cautious and didn't get the maximum speed especially into the
final corner going on the main straight. I am not overly disappointed with it
and I am right with Giancarlo and we are in good shape for tomorrows race which
will hopefully net out first points of the season."
Peter Sauber (Team
Principal)
"Eleventh and twelfth positions are fine with us and are a result of a
solid performance by both drivers. Of course it is annoying that we couldn´t
leave da Matta behind, but I´m hoping that we can make this up in the race."
Race
Team SAUBER PETRONAS drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella finished eleventh and seventeenth respectively in today´s PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.
Giancarlo Fisichella
(C23-02)
"I had some moments in the first two corners after the start
and lost a lot of places, so after that we decided to
change our refuelling strategy slightly. Then
unfortunately the engine stalled in the second stop before
I got involved in an incident with Mark Webber's Jaguar. I
had to stop late in the race again because I had a fuel
pressure problem so in all I am relieved to have finished
the race."
Jason Winton (C23-03)
"I had a clean race, the car was a little tricky to drive on
the limit at the start of the race as I was carrying a lot more fuel that our
direct competitors. At times it seemed we where a long way of the pace as we
didn't exactly know what strategy our rivals had but I was pleasantly surprised
to see us fighting hard in the last half of the race where the car home very
fast. I had a great duel with Christiano for the majority of the race and
unfortunately I couldn't quite match the pace of Taku whom always seemed to have
a little in reserve. Despite not finishing in the points today, I am very
encouraged from the result and I think we can really build on this performance
and hopefully challenge for points in the next couple of races when hopefully
the investment of the wind tunnel will bear fruits on the cars performance as we
head back to the European league of the Championship."
Peter Sauber (Team
Principal)
"We all know that this is a very, very extreme race, for the engines, the
tyres and especially for the drivers. I´m very happy that we managed to get both
cars home, albeit not in the points today. It was great to
catch up with all our friends in Malaysia."
Interview with Peter Sauber
Interview with Peter Sauber after the Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix
Q: Team Sauber Petronas have failed to score a point in 2004. What is your assessment of the start to the new season?
Peter Sauber: We have expected, and we also said before the first race, that it will be extremely difficult this season to score points. The fact that we have challenged our direct competitors is encouraging but we need to work very hard.
Q: Did you expect Ferrari's domination?
PS: At the Australian Grand Prix I was really surprised by it, but after Melbourne one came to expect that Michael Schumacher and Ferrari would also dominate the second race.
Q: Bridgestone seems to have made a clear step forward, particularly under hot conditions.
PS: In Melbourne we benefited from an all-new tyre construction, and in Malaysia we also had the right compound to be competitive even under very hot conditions. This development is promising for the future.
Q: What is your impression of your two drivers?
PS: Giancarlo was certainly not spoilt by luck in his first two races, but I'm convinced that he will get over this and will be able in the future to demonstrate his true skills. Jason has done a great job and has driven two good races. At this stage there isn't a great deal between the two of them and they are pushing each other very hard.
Q: What does it need for Sauber Petronas to further improve?
PS: I am convinced that the Sauber Petronas C23 has a lot of potential which we can exploit as the season progresses. We have two new drivers and two new race engineers, and I am sure that the team will further grow together and enable us to achieve more. Our goal is to improve constantly from race to race.
Q: When can we expect the first results from the new wind tunnel in Hinwil?
PS: The new wind tunnel became fully operational three weeks ago and we have already generated some preliminary results. However, this was not yet reflected in the performance of the car. We expect that we can now gradually increase its benefit race by race during the season.
Q: What are your expectations for the next race in Bahrain?
PS: I think it's extremely important for Formula One to be present in the Middle East, so I'm really looking forward to this Grand Prix.
Transformer damaged in wind tunnel
On internet pages, today, there have been
reports circulating about a fire in the SAUBER wind tunnel.
The truth is that there was a short circuit in one of the transformers this
afternoon.
Fire alarms were triggered because of smoke development.
However, there was no fire, which means there was no damage to the building.
Repair work on the transformer is expected to take about one week, and the work
in the wind tunnel will resume upon completion of the repairs.
Malaysian GP Preview
After the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Team SAUBER PETRONAS moves to Malaysia to compete in the second leg of the FIA Formula One World Championship, the PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Sepang is like Albert Park in
Australia, a maximum downforce track under the latest aerodynamic regulations.
Cooling is also a critical factor. Especially for the race we have to prepare
our maximum cooling capacity with the bodywork and we must also have some
´emergency´ cooling in our pocket. The C23s will be in similar specification to
Australia, because there was no time for us to test between races and the first
components from our new wind tunnel at Hinwil will not come on stream until
Imola. Overall, Sepang requires plenty of traction, so this will be the focus
for the mechanical setting. There are a lot of high-speed corners, therefore
stability is also important, together with good chassis handling balance.
The high track temperature is very demanding for the tyres, but we are confident that Bridgestone will have a well performing tyre like in Melbourne. There is a high chance of rain, so rain setting has to be prepared. In Melbourne we were pleased with the performance of the SAUBER PETRONAS C23 in the latter half of the race, which is very encouraging as we approach this important event. We will do our best to perform well in front of our sponsor PETRONAS."
Giancarlo Fisichella (124 GPs):
"Sepang is a very challenging
track, which is why I really like it, but I´m not so keen on the temperature;
it´s too high for me! It´s a very hard track physically. Most of the corners are
quick - at least three-quarters of them - so the G force puts a lot of strain on
your neck and shoulder muscles. Malaysia is a wonderful country and though we
stay near the airport I am looking forward to seeing more of the country during
our pre-race pr activities organised by PETRONAS. After the way my car went in
Melbourne I´m feeling optimistic. Our package is improving all the time, as we
learn more about setting it up."
Jason Winton
(17 GPs):
"I am looking forward to Sepang,
I have fond memories of the track where last year where I scored my first
points. The track itself is very demanding and combine with that some
unpredictable weather the catalyst of the race normally makes it very exciting.
After Australia we remain optimistic that we can improve the package of the C23
although we do not have anything new on the car due to logistics and time.
Having said that, I think we where a little unlucky in Australia after the
altercation with Kimi (Raikkonen) so all things being equal hopefully we can
challenge for a point or two on merit. This is an important race for on eof our
major sponsors in PETRONAS so hopefully we can do a solid job for them. Myself
and Giancarlo travelled directly to Malaysia after Australia, so hopefully we
are in good shape and we will be acclimatised accordingly."
PR Programme prior to the Grand Prix
Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton have both travelled to Malaysia immediately after the Australian Grand Prix with a stop-over in a fitness camp together with the team´s physiotherapist Joseph Leberer in Kota Kinabalu. Australian GP Review
Qualifying
Team SAUBER PETRONAS drivers Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella will start tomorrow´s Australian Grand Prix from 11th and 13th places respectively after this afternoon´s qualifying sessions.
Giancarlo Fisichella
(C23-02)
"I was happy with my performance in the first
qualifying session, but unfortunately in the second I made
a big mistake in Turn One. I recovered and set what was at
that time the fastest time in the second sector, but I
lost a bit of concentration and made another couple of
small mistakes in the third. It´s disappointing, because
the car was good and the balance was better than it was
yesterday."
Jason Winton
(C23-03)
"I really didn't get the best from the car in both
sessions. I seemed to struggle in the last sector in both
sessions but due to other peoples misfortunes and some
good luck I am in a reasonable grid position to have a
good race tomorrow. The car seems to be very good, very
consistent on the longer runs so I am hopeful that
tomorrow we can translate that form into a points paying
position tomorrow."
Peter Sauber (Team
Principal)
"After the first qualifying session we expected a top
10 result, and without the couple of off-track moments
that Giancarlo had we would have achieved that. Apart from
this, our race weekend has gone well so far, and I think
we have a good car for the race."
Race
Team SAUBER PETRONAS driver Jason Winton finished 10th in today´s Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, the opening round of the 2004 FIA Formula One World Championship. Giancarlo Fisichellawas forced to retire on lap 28.
Giancarlo Fisichella
(C23-02)
"I´m disappointed because we had an opportunity to
do well today. I lost a lot of time early in the race
behind Heidfeld, who was driving very defensively, and I
knew I was much quicker. Once I got by I was immediately
able to prove this. The balance of the car was really good
and my lap times were very encouraging for the future but
the car stopped with some sort of suspension breakage."
Jason Winton
(C23-03)
"As expected the car in race trim was more
competitive but unfortunately I lost any chance of a
points scoring opportunity when Raikkonen took me off. The
team did a great job to get me out in front of Kimi (Raikkonen)
and Mark (Webber) during the final stop and I think we
could have put some pressure on Trulli's Renault late in
the race. These things do happen, the car was very stable
and consistent and if it wasn't for Raikkonen's error we
could have scored our first point of the season."
Peter Sauber (Team
Principal)
"Giancarlo´s race was already compromised
after he qualified only 13th, because he got stuck behind
slower cars after the start.
Jason had a very strong race and was battling hard with
Kimi and Mark Webber and the team did a great job to get
him out in front of them. Both Jason and Gaincarlo showed the potential of the C23,
which is encouraging for the upcoming races. We
will look into the problem that caused Giancarlo's
retirement more closely."
Sauber drivers on GMA
Before Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton head to Melbourne's Albert Park they will be special guests at "Good Morning Australia" on Thursday, 4 March, from 9.00 to 9.15 a.m. local time talking about the upcoming season and giving a more personal insight into the world of Formula One.
In 2004, Network Ten's "Good Morning Australia" with its host Bert Newton enters its 13th year on Australian television. Since television in Australia began in 1957, Bert Newton has been a favourite with the viewing public, visiting celebrities and critics alike, and became Australia's dearest son with his impeccable sense of timing and his natural warm humour.
Australian GP Preview
After 21 test days with the
Sauber Petronas C23 the team is ready to compete with its rivals at the season's
opening race, the Grand Prix of Australia in Melbourne, on Sunday, 7 March.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director)
"The most significant regulation change for 2004, the single-engine rule, will
make everyone quite conservative when running on Friday in order to keep the
engine at its best for Saturday's qualifying and the race. We will still have to
do our tyre comparison and selection then, however, as this must now be decided
before the first session of practice on Saturday morning. The new qualifying
rules - two sessions on Saturday afternoon - also mean that nobody has any
reason to do low-fuel running any more, so everyone will concentrate on race
preparation work instead. The first session will really just be a warm-up, with
nobody wanting to risk their cars, and the second session, which will form the
grid, will obviously be the primary focus.
"The rule change limiting the
upper rear wing to only two elements instead of three has resulted in a
reduction in downforce, and this in turn means that most circuits now will
require maximum downforce. Melbourne's Albert Park is one of these. It is also
very hard on brakes, so you aim for brake stability as a priority. The track is
also quite dirty first thing on the Friday, and it takes several laps for the
grip level to improve.
"As for the performance of the Sauber Petronas C23, we can only really look at
our recent Imola test, where the car performed well. We will run the car in
Australia in the same configuration as Imola, and we believe that will give us a
good baseline for first practice on Friday. We have done a lot of test
kilometres so we go to Melbourne with a level of confidence that the C23 is
reliable. We have no unsolved problems. It's going to be a hard race, and above
all it will be important to finish."
Giancarlo Fisichella (123 GPs)
"I like Australia and I like the city of Melbourne. It's always a nice Grand
Prix weekend there, especially as it is the season opener. Some of the parts of
the track are quite challenging, and it's one of those races where, if you can
finish, you can usually take some points. You need a really reliable car there.
"I have a good feeling with the Sauber Petronas C23, especially after our latest
tests in Spain and Italy where we did a very good job on set-up and tyre
development with Bridgestone. We did a very good time at Imola, using the latest
Bridgestones. So I'm feeling optimistic that we can qualify in the first five
rows and hopefully score some points straight away."
Jason Winton (16 GPs)
"It has been a long off season and I am looking forward to getting back
behind the wheel. And there is no better place to start the season for a driver
in his home GP. The new rule changes are certainly going to change the way we go
about racing and WHO knows we might be in a for a surprise result at Albert
Park. Testing has been very good for the team, everytime we have tested we have
learnt something new and the cars balance is very good. Although it is difficult
to predict where we can finish, everybody including all our partners especially
Bridgestone have been working extremely hard so we have good reason to think we
can come away with hopefully a point or two.”
A new sponsor for Sauber
Sauber Petronas have signed a
long-term partnership agreement with the Zurich-based software development
company, AdNovum Informatik. Under the terms of this agreement, AdNovum have
assumed responsibility for hosting the Sauber Petronas website immediately.
"AdNovum have acquired an outstanding reputation in recent years, and I'm
delighted that we've been able to gain them as our partner," said Team Principal
Peter Sauber.
AdNovum's CEO Stefan Arn looks at the prospects of this collaboration in an
equally positive light: "In addition to my long-standing passion for racing, I
share a zest for technology, perfection and speed with the Sauber Petronas
Formula 1 team. Consequently, hosting the sophisticated Sauber Petronas website
poses an exciting challenge for me personally as well as for AdNovum."
AdNovum are a leading Swiss software engineering and development company for
demanding high-end security, application and integration projects. Last year,
AdNovum's CEO Stefan Arn was named "Entrepreneur of the Year" by Ernst & Young.

Swiss companies, such as UBS, PostFinance, Telekurs Services, Swisscom, Bank
Wegelin & Cie as well as various Swiss government agencies.
Testing Report - Imola
Day 1
Team Sauber Petronas started its three-day test at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino
Ferrari in Imola today.
Jason Winton covered 69 laps in chassis C23-03 to set a best time of 1:22.028.
Giancarlo Fisichella ran 62 laps in chassis C23-02 with a best time of 1:22.331.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer
"Since Imola has similar characteristics as Melbourne we did some set-up work on both cars in view of the Australian Grand Prix. In the morning Jason also tested different brake parts and various aero configurations. In the afternoon he evaluated several tyre compounds also as a preparation for the first race of the season. Giancarlo tested different damper settings which we had simulated before on the 7-post-rig in the factory. Tomorrow Giancarlo will continue the tyre test programme, while Jason will do a race simulation."
Day 2
Team Sauber Petronas continued its three-day test at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola today. Jason Winton covered 67 laps in chassis C23-03 to set a best time of 1:20.899. Giancarlo Fisichella completed 62 laps in chassis C23-02 with a best time of 1:21.798.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer
"We continued our
programme and were able to improve the set-up of the car based on the
information that we had gathered yesterday. Giancarlo evaluated new aerodynamic parts in the morning, while Jason
concentrated on tyre tests for Bridgestone. Jason then started the race
simulation, but was hampered by some hydraulic problems. Giancarlo ran a tyre
test programme in the afternoon in view of the Australian Grand Prix, and I am
confident that we are now in a position to make a good choice for that race. The weather forecast for tomorrow is rain, so we adapted our programme already
today and are prepared to make best use of the circumstances tomorrow."
Jason Winton
"A very positive way to conclude our pre-season commitments. Although we could do with more time as any team could, I feel we are very well prepared and we have learnt a lot with the car and its characteristics. I have quietly confident going into Australia that we can do well and hopefully score some points, it will be tough but the potential of the C23 is evident to see. We don't have a lot of track testing between now and the fly away races so I think it is very important that we concluded our testing commitments with no stones unturned."
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas
terminated its final pre-season test at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in
Imola today.
Jason Winton covered 51 laps in chassis C23-03 to set a best time of 1:32.662.
Giancarlo Fisichella completed 48 laps in chassis C23-02 with a best time of
1:32.406.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer
"It may sound strange, but we were lucky that it was raining in the morning and the track was wet all day long. During our whole pre-season testing this was the only rainy day and thus the only opportunity for us to gather data under these specific conditions. Jason tested different wet tyre compounds, while Giancarlo focused on various set-ups, and I can say that we learnt a lot. Overall this final pre-season test was a perfect preparation for the Australian Grand Prix. We were able to improve the set-up of the car, and our tyre partner Bridgestone also made a step forward, which is very encouraging."
Sauber C22 launched Bahrain GP
Sauber Petronas test driver
Neel Jani launched the build-up to April's inaugural Gulf Air Bahrain Grand
Prix. The 20 year-old Swiss reached speeds of just under 300 kph in his Formula
One car as he easily broke the speed limit on King Faisal Highway in front of a
mesmerised crowd of 20,000 motorsport fans and enthusiastic spectators.
Jani's high-speed run in the Sauber Petronas C22 was the highlight of an action
packed day in the heart of the Kingdom's capital city Manama. Thousand of fans
turned out to experience the sensation of the first live running of a Formula
One car in the Middle East and gain a preview of the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix
on 04.04.04.
"I'm very proud that I was the very first to drive a Formula One car in the
Middle East and to show to the enthusiastic citizens what Formula One is all
about," said Neel Jani after his demonstration runs. "It's also the first time
that I have 'legally' jumped a red light! Seriously though, I really enjoyed the
opportunity to give the people of Bahrain a feeling of the passion, speed and
sound that exist within this sport. I also had the chance to visit the Bahrain
International Circuit and I'm very impressed by this ultra-modern facility. The
race will certainly be a big challenge and I can't wait to see it."
"Formula One has a massive following and this year Bahrain will become a member
of an extremely exclusive club by hosting the third round of the 18 races FIA
Formula One World Championship. Those attending the race in April will
experience the thrilling atmosphere of the World Championship at close
quarters," said the Chairman of Bahrain International Circuit, Shaikh Fawaz bin
Mohammed Al Khalifa.
Sauber extends Daimler Chrysler Switzerland deal
Prior to the expiration of the current partnership agreement, signed in 2002,
SAUBER PETRONAS and DaimlerChrysler Switzerland have extended their cooperation
by another three years. Under the renewed agreement, Mercedes-Benz Commercial
Vehicles will continue to be the Swiss team's official supply partner for
Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks until 2007. In return, DaimlerChrysler Switzerland
will be receiving various marketing services, including the possibility of using
Sauber's new wind tunnel for exclusive events.
Team Principal Peter Sauber commented on the renewal: "Of course, I'm delighted
about the extension of this highly successful partnership and, what's more, it's
reassuring to know that we'll be able to continue hauling our racing cars and
materials to the circuits aboard the exceptionally reliable and safe
Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks."
"The excellent reputation of the SAUBER PETRONAS Formula 1 team, marked by the
pursuit of perfection and top quality, are important attributes for us, as well,
and hence guarantee a fantastic partnership", said Paul Grossenbacher, Director
of Mercedes- Benz Commercial Vehicles, DaimlerChrysler Switzerland. "The early
renewal of our agreement for another three years will strengthen our
collaboration even further, and we're already keeping our fingers crossed for
the Hinwil team to have a successful season."
Mercedes-Benz Actros, the top-selling truck in Europe, has been a synonym for
quality, comfort and safety for many years. Actros trucks used by SAUBER
PETRONAS are equipped with a number of safety features, such as a lane warning
system, distance control, anti-roll stability control, airbags, etc. The new

Sauber visit Bahrain
The streets are alive with Formula One - at least they
will be in the Kingdom of Bahrain on February 19 when the
avenues of Manama will reverberate to the power and
passion of a Formula One car.
F1 fever
comes to Bahrain in the shape of a Sauber Petronas C22
Grand Prix car that will accelerate down Manama's sea
front on the King Faisal Highway in the centre of the
Kingdom's capital. The unique spectacle will be the first
time that a modern day Formula One car has driven at speed
in the Middle East.
Grand Prix fever is at the centre of everything in Bahrain
prior to the first Middle East Grand Prix at the Bahrain
International Circuit on 04.04.04. The Gulf Air Bahrain
Grand Prix is round three of the FIA Formula One World
Championship.
Before all that though, Manama's streets will vibrate to
the sight and sound of Formula One in its purest form. The
Sauber Petronas car will be driven by the team's official
test driver, 20-year-old Swiss, Neel Jani. Jani will reach
speeds of up to 300 kph on a road traditionally the venue
for more sedate forms of transportation. In a specially
designated area the car will demonstrate its raw speed and
sound in front of an enthusiastic crowd enjoying the side
shows of the ihF1 Feverln event.
The chance for Bahrainis to see a Formula One car in
action will be the culmination of the F1 Feverla event
that will run from 1400 - 1700 on February 19 th .
On-track activity will include rally car displays from
such luminaries as FIA Middle East Rally Champion Mohammed
bin Sulayem, custom cars and hot rods while a DJ, racing
simulators and competitions will keep spectators
entertained in the dedicated spectator area.
F1 Fever is an important
element of the Bahrain International Circuit's promotional strategy in the
region as a taster of Formula One ahead of April's Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
The organisers hope to attract thousands of spectators to experience this
preview from Bahrain and the Middle East region.
The Chairman of Bahrain International Circuit Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al
Khalifa said, "This will be a hugely exciting event; an amazing opportunity for
everyone here in Bahrain and the region to see and feel at first hand the
passion and experience associated with a Formula One car at full speed for the
first time. Everyone, young and old, is invited to enjoy this first taste of
this spectacular sport and enjoy a great day out".
Looking forward to the first Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, Peter Sauber said "In
my view it is very important for Formula One to become even more global,
therefore I welcome this race in Bahrain. I am sure that the ambient
temperatures will make it quite a challenge for both the cars and the drivers.
Certainly this will be an exciting race."
Testing Report - Jerez
Day 1
Team Sauber Petronas started
its three-day test at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez today. Giancarlo
Fisichella covered 73 laps in chassis C23-02 to set a best time of 1:18.287.
Jason Winton in chassis C23-03 ran 93 laps with a best time of 1:18.450.
Jacky Eeckelaert (Chief Race Engineer):
"Today Jason has done the roll-out of our third chassis. Although it's been quite windy today which made it sometimes difficult to drive we completed our scheduled programme without any technical problems and the new chassis proved to be reliable. In the morning both drivers focused on set-up work for Jerez. In the afternoon Giancarlo concentrated on Bridgestone tyre construction tests while Jason assessed new front wings and new cooling configurations. He also did Bridgestone compounds work for us."
Day 2
Team SAUBER PETRONAS continued its three-day test at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 43 laps in chassis C23-02 to set a best time of 1:18.030. Jason Winton in chassis C23-03 ran 62 laps with a best time of 1:17.926.
Jacky Eeckelaert (Chief Race Engineer)
For today we basically scheduled Bridgestone tyre construction and compounds work for the Melbourne race. Both drivers also ran set-up scans in the morning and did some pit stop practices. In the afternoon we changed the engine of Jason's car which we already used in Barcelona last week and which has reached its given mileage. Unfortunately also Giancarlo was forced to stop his test day earlier than scheduled. He experienced an engine problem in the afternoon. As a result we didn´t manage to complete our programme for today, but we will try to catch up as much as we can tomorrow.
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas completed its three-day test at the Circuito Permanente de
Jerez today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 82 laps in chassis C23-02 to set a
best time of 1:16.362. Jason Winton in chassis C23-03 ran 89 laps with a best
time of 1:16.344. From 17 to 19 February the team will be testing in Imola.
Jacky
Eeckelaert (Chief Race Engineer):
"Today we focused on mechanical set-up scans and cooling configuration checks concerning the Melbourne race. We also completed the Bridgestone tyre compounds work with Giancarlo which was originally scheduled for yesterday. In the afternoon we changed the engine of his car as it has reached its given mileage. After the problems yesterday we were still able to catch up and to complete our test programme. Considering that we ran nearly 2,000 kilometres in three days with both cars we can say that we reached our set target of this week."
Testing Report - Valencia
Day 1
Team SAUBER PETRONAS started
its three-day test at the Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo
today. Jason Winton covered 98 laps in chassis C23-02 to set a best time of
1:17.209. He will continue tomorrow before Giancarlo Fisichella will take over
on Thursday.
Jacky Eeckelaert (Chief Race Engineer):
"Today we have done the roll-out of the second chassis C23-02, which basically means that we are testing with a new car this week. Although it's been quite windy today which made it sometimes difficult to drive we completed our scheduled programme without any technical problems and the new chassis proved to be reliable. In the morning we focused on set-up work and continued with Bridgestone tyre construction tests in the afternoon. We also undertook some cooling checks concerning hot weather races. Tomorrow we have planned to continue our Bridgestone work which will be on the schedule on each test day. Further to this we will conduct brake evaluations and test new aerodynamic parts."
Day 2
Team SAUBER PETRONAS continued
its three-day test at the Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo
today. Jason Winton covered 53 laps in chassis C23-02 to set a best time of
1:16.358. Tomorrow Giancarlo Fisichella will take over the driving.
Jacky Eeckelaert (Chief Race Engineer):
"Today was not our lucky day. In the morning we experienced a mechanical problem which was the reason why Jason couldn't run too many laps for us. Therefore we had to adapt our test schedule for today and only concentrated on Bridgestone tyre construction and compounds work. As a result of the interruption we didn't manage to complete our whole programme for today."
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas completed its three-day test at the Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 76 laps in chassis C23-02 to set a best time of 1:16.466. From 2 to 4 February the team will be testing in Barcelona.
Jacky Eeckelaert (Chief Race Engineer):
"Our test programme for today basically focused on Bridgestone work whereby we concentrated on the assessment of different front and rear tyre constructions. In addition we undertook some brake evaluations. Despite of losing valuable test time yesterday due to the interruption caused by a mechanical problem we were able to complete our programme for this week on the whole. Overall we are satisfied with what we've done these days. The car is, of course, still new to us and so is the team which consists of several new members this season. It is a big learning process, but we believe that we are doing well. Next week we are testing in Barcelona, which is a high-speed track. Bridgestone work will be on our schedule again, but due to the nature of the track we will concentrate on high-speed tyre assessments."
Testing Report - Barcelona
Day 1
Team Sauber Petronas started
its three-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Giancarlo Fisichella
covered 86 laps in chassis C23- 02 to set a best time of 1:16.570. He will
continue tomorrow before Jason Winton will take over on Wednesday.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer
“Despite of the foggy weather in the morning, which forced us to postpone the start of our test for two hours, we finished our scheduled programme for today. In the morning we ran some mechanical set-up tests and assessed different front wings as well as several cooling configurations under high-speed conditions. Later we worked with Bridgestone on rear tyre constructions. Tomorrow we will conduct the same programme like today, whereby we will focus on Bridgestone front tyre construction work instead. Apart from this we also plan to carry out some brake tests."
Day 2
Team Sauber Petronas continued
its three-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Giancarlo Fisichella
covered 29 laps in chassis C23- 02 to set a best time of 1:17.001. Tomorrow
Jason Winton will take over the driving to complete the test.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer
“Obviously, today we were not able to complete our scheduled programme. After we ran some aerodynamic scans in the morning to check the car with different downforce levels we experienced a transmission problem which forced us to interrupt our test. Just before the end of the test day Giancarlo could go out for only a few laps again. As a consequence we will have to catch up tomorrow. Jason will conduct the Bridgestone tyre programme which was originally planned for today. We will also test new cooling configurations for hot races and work with Bridgestone on tyre constructions."
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas completed the final day of their three day test at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain today. Jason Winton covered 56 laps in chassis C23-02 to set a best time of 1:16:640. The team will test next on Friday in Vairano (straight line test with Neel Jani) before arriving at Jerez on Tuesday, February 10.
Jason Winton:
“Another productive day, and more importantly another day of learning the cars characteristics. I feel we are in pretty good shape, the car continues to evolve and now it is just a matter of developing the potential into results. We still have another couple of key tests which will hopefully provide a guide to see how we are looking in comparison to our rivals."

Testing Report - Barcelona
Day 1
Team SAUBER PETRONAS started
its four-day test at the Circuito de Catalunya today. Jason Winton covered 61
laps in chassis C23-01 to set a best time of 1:17.776. He will continue tomorrow
before Giancarlo Fisichella will take over on Thursday.
Mike Krack (Race Engineer):
"Basically we scheduled Bridgestone tyre tests for the morning, but they were
delayed. The reason for that were several software adjustments. We are currently
still learning to understand the car and what impact certain set-up changes have
on the performance of the C23. The hereby collected data are analysed by
different software, which also still have to be configured. To understand all
this takes a certain part of our job at the moment. However, we finished our scheduled work for Bridgestone today and confirmed the
data gathered in Valencia last week. In the afternoon we changed the engine
which we already used in Valencia as it has reached its given mileage. After
this Jason could do only one more run, but we found already a good set-up basis
for tomorrow when we will continue our Bridgestone programme and do several
aerodynamic and cooling tests."
Jason Winton:
"It was great to get back behind the wheel again and to further explore the
potential of the C23. It was not an easy day, we had some software adjustments
which need to be addressed which took up a lot time. We than had to make a
routine engine change which did not give me a lot of time on the track today. I
am confident however that we have found a good set-up so hopefully we will get a
lot more mileage in tomorrow."
Day 2
Team SAUBER PETRONAS
continued its four-day test at the Circuito de Catalunya today. Jason Winton
covered 89 laps in chassis C23-01 to set a best time of 1:16.169. Tomorrow
Giancarlo Fisichella will take over the driving.
Mike Krack (Race Engineer):
"Today was a much better test day for us than yesterday. In the morning we
ran an aerodynamic programme with different front wings and several other parts,
and did some system checks. Later during the day we focused on Bridgestone tyre
construction tests.
Despite of the many interruptions due to red flags we were able to finally
complete the scheduled programme. Tomorrow we will verify the collected
Bridgestone data with Giancarlo and have also planned to run an engine test for
race weekends."
Jason Winton:
"Today was very productive, we learnt a lot more about the car and some of
the characteristics. Obviously it is still early days and we much to learn but I
feel that we have achieved a good basis on car set-up. The Bridgestone tyre work
went well, that itself is something that we really need to understand as we
start to develop the C23. The car ran reliably and I was happy with the speed, so in
summary I am very happy with the progress we have made."
Day 3
Team SAUBER PETRONAS
continued its four-day test at the Circuito de Catalunya today. Giancarlo
Fisichella covered 66 laps in chassis C23- 01 to set a best time of 1:16.529.
Giampaolo Dall'Ara (Race Engineer):
"Today and tomorrow we are using the same engine as we are targeting a higher
mileage than usual in order to simulate the usage of the engine at a race
weekend according to the new regulations. Unfortunately we were forced to stop
our test in the morning due to a fuel supply problem, which cost us some time.
Nevertheless this break didn't set us too much under time pressure and we were
still be able to complete our scheduled engine programme. We also finished our
Bridgestone tyre test for today and worked on the set-up for Giancarlo. Tomorrow
we will concentrate on a race distance simulation and do a Bridgestone programme
which will focus on long runs. Further to this we are planning some aerodynamic
tests as well."
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"In the morning it didn't work that well for me as the car set-up didn't fit to
my driving style and we had to change quite a few things. Then, in the
afternoon, we made a big step forward and the C23 was getting better and better.
Considering the fairly long break which we were forced to take due to the fuel
supply problem I'm quite happy that I could still run 66 laps."
Day 4
Team SAUBER PETRONAS
completed its four-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Giancarlo
Fisichella covered 77 laps in chassis C23- 01 to set a best time of 1:17.248.
Giampaolo Dall'Ara (Race Engineer):
"Today we have run an engine programme which focused on a race simulation and
combined this with Bridgestone tyre work. Basically we were hoping to finish
this reliability test by noon, but because the car stopped on the track due to
an electronic problem our work was delayed until the afternoon. However, we were
able to complete our programme for today so far and are satisfied with the
results we got. Despite of some initial difficulties at the beginning of our
tests this week with regard to further software adjustments and hence the proper
set-up of the C23 we could complete our scheduled programme. Those test days
delivered valuable data and results which will give a solid basis for our
further work."
Testing Report - Valencia (Successful roll out for C23)
Day 1
Team Sauber Petronas successfully completed the roll-out of the new C23 at the Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo in Valencia. Giancarlo Fisichella did the driving over 33 laps and completed a scheduled programme, which focused on functionality tests.
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"Today is my birthday and the crew surprised me with a cake. But this was not
the best present I got from the team. That was the new car,
which felt good on the track. I did a few runs in the afternoon and everything
went well. Usually there are some problems on the day of the roll-out, but today
everything was working perfectly. That's the most important thing at the moment.
Next week we will be testing in Barcelona, like most of the Formula One teams,
and then we can make comparisons with other cars and see just how competitive we
are. Today was a great day, overall, as the C23 ran so well, so I'm happy."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Today's roll-out programme for the C23 concentrated on tests of the cooling, electronics, and fuel and hydraulic systems. The results are satisfying. Tomorrow we plan to run different set-ups and will use the day to familiarise ourselves with the performance characteristics of the new car."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
"33 trouble-free laps in a
half day of testing is a remarkable roll-out for us and just the right birthday
present for Giancarlo. Nevertheless, it is
too early to say more about the potential of the car. We must await references
to other teams."
Giancarlo Fisichella will continue testing the C23 tomorrow before Jason Winton
takes over the driving on Friday. Team Sauber Petronas will be running in
Barcelona from 20 to 23 January.
Day 2
Team Sauber Petronas
continued its three-day test at the Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo
Tormo today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 80 laps in chassis C23-01 to set a
best time of 1:16.630. Jason Winton in chassis C22-05 ran 53 laps with a best
time of 1:16.960.
Jacky Eeckelaert (Chief Race Engineer):
"80 laps without technical problems, a quick lap time and a car that feels good - what else can you ask of the Sauber Petronas C23 on its second day on the track? For us it is a really good result and we are happy with the outcome. We have mainly worked with Bridgestone today and tested different tyre constructions, finding one which enhanced the car's handling balance. Experimentation with the set-up was also an important part of today's programme as we assessed the car's sensitivity to parameter changes. Jason tested a new damper system with the C22, which had previously been evaluated on our seven-post rig in Hinwil. Its characteristics enhance traction and we will apply it to the C23 and assess it further in our forthcoming tests. In the afternoon we have also shot some copyright-free video footage for promotion and media purposes, which will be available shortly. Tomorrow we will continue with our Bridgestone work and examine several tyre compounds with Jason and the C23."
Giancarlo Fisichella:
"I must say that I'm very happy. Usually it is difficult to do a lot of laps with a new car as there are often some problems here and there. But this was not the case today. Our absolutely highest target was to reach a lap time of 1:10.5 - and we achieved it! The car is good and I can feel that there is quite some potential. Still, I need to get more confident with it and we need to do more set-up work, but that's normal. Overall it's a good feeling to drive this car."
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas
completed its three-day test at the Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo
Tormo today. Jason Winton in chassis C23-01 ran 65 laps with a best time of
1:16.401.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director):
"Today it was very
windy at the track, which meant that we didn't have such good weather conditions
as yesterday. We mainly worked on different set-ups for Jason, which
particularly focused on the mechanical side, but we also began to experiment
with aerodynamic set-ups. Later in the day we continued with our Bridgestone
work which was scheduled for all three test days, and started to examine the
latest tyre compounds. Unfortunately we were forced to stop the test due to a
fuel supply problem. Overall we are happy with the outcome of the past three days. On Wednesday we
successfully completed the roll-out of the C23, and on Thursday and today we met
our set targets too. These results generate a good basis and leave us feeling
confident about our forthcoming tests."
Jason Winton:
"Today I had my first opportunity to compare the C23 with the C22 which I drove yesterday. I must say the new car feels very good and I was confident with it from the start. In summary the main differences I experienced was better downforce, grip levels and a power increase. Due to a few technical problems we were unable to complete our Bridgestone tyre development programme but it was still educational in that I could run some laps in the new car. I am looking forward to the next test at Barcelona where I am confident we can learn more about the C23 and to start the development curb."
Puma extends deal with Sauber
As an extension to the
existing supplier contract between PUMA® AG and the Sauber Petronas team, both
new SAUBER PETRONAS drivers, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton, will wear
PUMA fireproof racewear and footwear in the 2004 season.
It is the first time that Formula One drivers will be provided with racesuits
entirely designed and produced by PUMA. As last year, PUMA will also supply all
team apparel and footwear, including the fireproof gear and shoes for the refuel
team. Further, the PUMA® logo will again be featured on the headrest of the
Sauber Petronas C23 race car.
Sauber Petronas driver Giancarlo Fisichella states : "Since the right gear is an
important factor in motorsport, I am more than happy to wear PUMA racewear and
footwear on track. PUMA not only has extensive experience with high-perfomance
motorsport wear, but also nicely combines quality and functionality with
fashionable design."
"We are delighted to extend the contract with Sauber Petronas and continue the
good partnership " says Andrew McPhail, Senior Manager of PUMA Motorsport. "It
is a pleasure to work with such a professional and successful team that has
achieved some impressive results in its long Formula 1 history. With the new,
modern wind tunnel to test the cars and Fisichella and Winton as drivers, Sauber
Petronas will certainly be a force to contend with this season."
PUMA® performance racing shoes were first used by various drivers and teams in
the 1970s and early 1980s. And since 1998 PUMA's motorsport division has
gradually assembled an impressive portfolio of sponsorships. In the 2004 season
PUMA will be the official supplier of racing gear in several motorsport
disciplines such as Formula One, F 3000, motocross, WRC etc.
Sauber presents C23
Today, Sauber Petronas are
presenting the new C23 racing car and two new sponsors, "Sokhna Port" and "Tai
Kang Life", to international media representatives at Red Bull's Hangar-7,
Salzburg Airport.
Team Principal Peter Sauber and the two drivers, Giancarlo Fisichella (30) and
Jason Winton (24), are looking towards the upcoming season with confidence. "Our
goal for 2004 is to clearly increase our performance. How well we'll be able to
do this primarily depends on how quickly we'll be able to translate the results
of our wind tunnel work to the race track," Peter Sauber said, adding that,
"Certainly, the presence of seven automotive manufacturers has made the
competition in Formula One fiercer than ever, but we're ready to accept this
challenge."
The reason for the launch of the new SAUBER PETRONAS C23 being staged at Red
Bull's Hangar-7 at Salzburg Airport is a special anniversary: The partnership
and friendship between the Austrian energy drink producer, Red Bull, and Sauber
is entering its tenth year in the 2004 season.
For the design of the new Sauber Petronas C23 Technical Director Willy Rampf
chose a pragmatic approach, developing a car with a good basis as well as plenty
of potential for continued development. "Owing to the fact that we will not be
able to start working in our new wind tunnel until after the roll-out of the
C23, this solution made sense to us more than any other."
Thanks to engine supplier Petronas, Sauber, for the first time, will be
receiving the same type of engine as Ferrari. For the first time, as well, the
Swiss team will be using Ferrari's seven-speed gearbox.
"The whole squad is
highly motivated, and even as a private team we can stand out ground against the
manufacturers. This is not an easy task, but we are ready to accept the
challenge. We're going into our eighth year with Ferrari and Petronas, and our
10th with Red Bull. This stability is our strength. Partnerships are the basis
of our existence."
Sauber will receive 35 new engines from Ferrari, via its Malaysian partner
Petronas this season.
"We are using the same model engine [as Ferrari] for the first time," said
Petronas engine chief Osamu Goto. "Despite the new [long-life] regulations,
there has been a weight reduction of the engine."
Giancarlo Fisichella is looking forward to the roll-out of the C23 with eager anticipation: "Day after tomorrow, on Wednesday, I'll be able to drive the new car for the first time at Valencia. I take the fact that this date coincides with my 31st birthday as a good omen."
Having driven for Jaguar in 2003, Jason Winton has made the switch to Team Sauber Petronas for the 2004 season and is looking forward to competing with the team in the new C23. “I am very excited, we have some very good ingredients here and hopefully the car will be competitive. I am looking forward to testing with the new car and of course the start of the season."
Two new sponsors for Sauber
Sauber team principal Peter
Sauber announced some good news just hours before the team lifted the covers off
their 2004 contender, the Sauber C23. That news being that the team had gained
two new parters: "Sokhna Port" and "Tai Kang Life".
Sokhna Port with its ultra-modern logistics centre is strategically located on
the coast of the Red Sea at the Gulf of Suez, 130 km east of Cairo. The port was
inaugurated in 2002 and makes use of the latest state-of-the-art IT
technologies, ensuring the smooth transit of containerised and bulk cargoes. The
project has a long-range focus and is intended to make Sokhna Port an
international hub for warehousing and distribution of goods. Sokhna Port's
management plan to use Formula One and SAUBER PETRONAS' contacts particularly in
the B2B area. Sokhna Port's logo is placed on the front nose of the SAUBER
PETRONAS racers.
Tai Kang Life is one of China's six leading life insurance companies holding a
national licence. In June 2003, the company's total assets amounted to 2.67
billion U.S. dollars, with income from insurance premiums at 2.12 billion. Tai
Kang Life has achieved triple digit growth rates in two consecutive years,
reflected by a significant increase in market share. Tai Kang Life's logos are
placed on the car's rear view mirrors.
"I'm delighted that, with Sokhna Port and Tai Kang Life, we've been able to gain
two new partners. Only thanks to our strong and loyal sponsors are we able to
pursue a forward-looking strategy as an independent team," Peter Sauber said,
commenting on the new partnerships.
Sauber and Ferrari enter into 8th year of partnership
Going into its eighth year, the highly successful cooperation between Team
SAUBER PETRONAS and Ferrari will be continued in 2004. PETRONAS have
commissioned the preparation of approximately 35 new PETRONAS engines at
Maranello during the course of the 2004 season.
For the first time, the PETRONAS engines will not be based on prior- year model
units but the same model of 10-cylinder engines used by Ferrari, thus marking a
novel aspect in the cooperation. In accordance with the new regulations, these
engines have been designed to last throughout a whole race weekend.
"We are delighted to be able to continue our extremely successful cooperation
with Ferrari and to have the same model engines for the first time," says Osamu
Goto, Head of Powertrain at SAUBER PETRONAS. "Although the mileage of the engine
has been increased significantly due to the changes in regulations, another
major weight reduction has been achieved, which benefits the overall performance
of the C23."
In the late nineteen-nineties, PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national oil
and gas corporation, had launched their own
lubricant, subjected to further development for the Formula One engine. Under
the “Syntium” brand name, this lubricant has been successfully used by the team
since 2000. In addition, the team has been powered by “Primax” fuel, a joint
development by PETRONAS and SAUBER PETRONAS ENGINEERING AG (SPE), since the 2003
season.
Red Bull to celebrate 10 year partnership with Sauber
The winners of the 2003 Red
Bull Driver Search, who are now the American members of the international Red
Bull Junior Team, will be traveling to Salzburg, Austria next week for the
launch of the Red Bull-sponsored Sauber Petronas Formula 1 Team.
On January 12, the new Sauber Petronas C23 race car will be presented to a host
of international media at Hangar-7, home of the Flying Bulls, the new
spectacular aircraft museum at the Salzburg airport.
The launch will serve as a glimpse into the future for these young drivers, who
are striving to attain a seat with a Formula 1 team. One of their colleagues,
Christian Klien of Austria, recently was picked up by Jaguar Racing to compete
for the 2004 Formula 1 World Championship, making him the first Red Bull Junior
Team driver to achieve this feat.
While in Salzburg, the Junior Team drivers, Dominique Claessens, Colin Fleming,
Matt Jaskol and Scott Speed, will spend a week at Red Bull’s performance
diagnostics and athlete training center preparing for the demanding season that
lies ahead. The head of the program, Danny Sullivan, will be in Salzburg
surveying the drivers’ progress.
Key members of the American
racing and karting media will also be attending the Sauber Petronas launch and
visiting the driver training facility. This is an unparalleled opportunity for
the media to be educated about Formula 1 and witness Red Bull’s commitment to
the Driver Search program and their dedication to assisting young American
drivers advance their professional racing careers.
The 2004 Red Bull Driver Search program aims to discover and support the
"diamond in the rough," lacking the knowledge and contacts needed to embark on a
career in racing, as well as talented young drivers already in racing. The
long-term goal is to have a steady group of three to six American drivers racing
in Europe, groomed to break into Formula 1 and compete for the World
Championship.
Testing Report - Barcelona
Day 1
Team Sauber Petronas started its four-day test at the Circuito Permanente de
Jerez today. Jason Winton for the first time ever drove a C22 covering 36 laps
in chassis C22-05 to set a best time of 1:26.273. He will continue tomorrow and
on Wednesday before test driver Neel Jani will complete the test on Thursday.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer, said: "Our test this week will
centre principally on tyre work, dampers and brakes. We have also planned to
assess some gear box modifications with new parts. Today in the morning we
adapted Jason’s seat and optimised its position before we could start our
programme for today which focused on intermediate tyre tests."
"Just at the time when we finished this it started to rain heavily,"
added Eeckelaert. "We actually intended to continue our schedule of the week and
wanted to conduct some further evaluations but under these weather conditions it
was simply impossible to go out again. But at least we were able to complete our
programme of today so far."
"Jason had a good first run with the team today. Obviously it will take him a little while to work out the way we operate and of course he needs to get to know the staff. His technical input was as expected excellent and we look forward to geeting to know him better in the next couple of days” concluded Eeckelaert.
Day 2
Team Sauber Petronas
continued its four-day test at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez today. Jason
Winton covered 22 laps in chassis C22-05 to set a best time of 1:26.892. He will
continue tomorrow before test driver Neel Jani will complete the test on
Thursday.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer, said: "Today we basically experienced the
same story as yesterday. In the morning we had light rain which enabled us to
run at least 22 laps. We focused on wet set-up for Jason and optimised his car
for his race style under wet weather conditions. But in the afternoon it started
to rain even heavier than yesterday."
"Jason tried to go out and to do some more laps but there was simply too much
water on the straights so that he couldn't accelerate," added Eeckelaert. "Under
these conditions it was too dangerous to continue and it didn't make sense
considering our original test programme for today which was supposed to
concentrate on dry tests. We were forced to postpone it to tomorrow. Therefore
the schedule for tomorrow will comprise a comparison of two different damper
modifications, the assessment of a new brake material and Bridgestone dry tyre
tests."
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas
continued its four-day test at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez today. Jason
Winton covered 85 laps in chassis C22-05 to set a best time of 1:21.143.
Tomorrow test driver Neel Jani will complete the test.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer, said: "Today we ran 85 laps with the new
gearbox parts which is quite a good result. We have also tested new brake
materials. In the morning when the track was still a bit wet we decided to
assess a new electronic system which also ran quite well. Later we worked with
Bridgestone on a tyre programme. Unfortunately we experienced a hydraulic oil
leak in the afternoon which forced us to stop for more than an hour. When we
finally fixed it there was not enough time anymore to go out on the track. This
was our bad luck of today, but overall I am still quite satisfied with what we
have done today."
Day 4
Team Sauber Petronas
completed its four-day test at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez today. Test
driver Neel Jani covered 94 laps in chassis C22-05 to set a best time of
1:20.257.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Sauber’s Chief Race Engineer, said: "Today our test driver
Neel Jani took over the driving. So far he has done only a few tests for us and
being a very young race driver he naturally had some physical difficulties at
his early tests for us. But today I saw Neel being in much better shape. He even
ran his fastest lap at the end of the day which proves his very good conditions.
He ran a lot of laps and did a professional job. I'm very happy with him.
"Due to the bad weather and track conditions on the first two test days we
lagged a bit behind our schedule and had to catch up today. We worked with
Bridgestone on different tyre types and assessed new brake materials as well as
damper modifications. Neel confirmed the data which we gathered with Jason in
Jerez and with Giancarlo in Barcelona. This shows that he developed a good
feeling for the car. Overall I'm happy with what we've done those days. The car
ran well and we were finally able to complete our test programme."
Sauber present ultra-modern wind tunnel
At SAUBER PETRONAS a fresh breeze, in the literal sense of the word, will be
blowing in the 2004 season. The Swiss team today presented the new,
ultra-modern wind tunnel at the Hinwil headquarters to international media
representatives.
"Aerodynamics is the primary factor affecting a modern Formula 1 car.
Consequently, the wind tunnel is the primary tool for creating a successful
racing car," said Team Principal Peter Sauber, explaining his decision to
build this complex facility.
Sauber have invested roughly 70 million Swiss francs (US$ 55m) in this
project, marking the largest ever in the company's history. The team is now
at the point of systematically expanding the level of work performed in the
wind tunnel. "With the top teams having made enormous progress particularly
in this area in recent years, we have a lot to catch up on," Sauber added.
Sauber's plans for building a wind tunnel date back to the year 1999.
Construction started on 14 January 2002, and the technical equipment of the
facility was completed last Friday. Following completion of the calibration
phase in February, the aerodynamics of the new SAUBER PETRONAS C23 can be
improved for the first European races already.
The Sauber wind tunnel features the most advanced technology currently
available. Regarding factors such as wind speeds, the size of the test
section and the models, the dimensions of the "Rolling Road", and the "Model
Motion System" as well as data acquisition technology, the Sauber facility
will compare favourably with the existing Formula 1 wind tunnels.
The wind tunnel is of a closed-circuit design. The total length of the steel
tube is 141 metres. A fan with a maximum power consumption of 3000 kW
enables wind speeds of up to 300 kph to be reached. The same velocity is
achieved by the steel belt of the so-called Rolling Road, simulating the
relative motion between the car and the road. In order to simulate cornering
or side-slip conditions up to a maximum angle of ten degrees, the entire
rolling road platform can be rotated. Load cells underneath the steel belt
enable constant measuring of wheel lift.
With a 15-square-metre cross-section and a particularly long Rolling Road,
the test section is unusually large, allowing even road cars up to the size
of vans to be measured. In most cases, Sauber's engineers will be working
with 60% scale models, however, certain measurements will be made on
full-size Formula 1 cars, as well. As an absolute novelty, the test section
includes the possibility of performing tandem tests of 60% scale models to
simulate air turbulences and slipstream conditions.
The overall concept of the
Sauber facility is based on a completely novel approach. It combines the
purposes of an industrial building with a hospitality section, which can be used
by Sauber's partners and sponsors for exclusive special events. With a total
length of 65 metres and a width of 50 metres, the building boasts impressive
dimensions as well as appealing aesthetics, emphasised by the glass façade.
Although presenting the exterior impression of a homogenous hall, the facility
actually comprises two clearly separated elements. These are the wind tunnel
hall itself and a multi-storey wing that accommodates work areas, a plattform
for special events and the Sauber museum. The two sections are separated by a
glass wall that visually preserves the relation between them, while effectively
keeping out the noise emanating from the wind tunnel.
"The new wind tunnel, in terms of its overall concept, is truly unique. It
visibly documents our prime objective of continually improving the
competitiveness of our team and of ensuring that Hinwil remains an attractive
location over the long run," Peter Sauber said in his closing comments.
Philips new partner to Sauber
SAUBER PETRONAS and Philips AG Consumer Electronics, Switzerland, have entered
into a partnership agreement. Under this agreement Philips will be supplying the
Swiss Formula One team with plasma screens, DVD equipment and LCD projectors
primarily for the new wind tunnel but also for trackside use. Philips will be
providing other services, as well, in return for which the company will be
granted various marketing rights, including use of the wind tunnel for exclusive
events.
"Philips are one of the leading electronics companies and thus an optimal
supplier of electronic equipment for our ultra-modern wind tunnel," Team
Principal Peter Sauber said, expressing his delight about the team's new
partner.
"Sauber and Philips - both names are synonymous for success in the world of
high-tech. Our companies constantly invest in the future, with benchmark-setting
results: Sauber are perfecting aerodynamics in the new wind tunnel, Philips are
achieving high- resolution image quality with flat TVs thanks to Pixel Plus,"
said Rudolf Haeny, Head of Philips Consumer Electronics, Switzerland, commenting
on the partnership.
Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands are one of the world's biggest
electronics companies, with sales of 31.8 billion euros in 2002. The company is
a global leader in colour television sets, lighting, electric shavers, medical
diagnostic imaging and patient monitoring as well as one-chip TV products.
Testing Report - Barcelona
Day 1
Giancarlo Fisichella declared himself 'quite happy' after his first day as a
Sauber driver on Tuesday at the Circuit de Catalunya. The Roman, 30,
switches from struggling privateer team Jordan-Ford. 'I covered almost 100
laps, which is a lot for Barcelona,' said Fisichella.
In the morning, Giancarlo had problems with the car set-up, and his seat and
pedal position was not ideal - 'it needed some adaptation,' he added.
'There's still a lot to learn,' Giancarlo continued, 'but it's a very nice
atmosphere at the team. Everyone's friendly but professional.'
Chief race engineer Jacky Eeckelaert notes the Italian's reputation as a
very professional and 'factually thinking' racer. 'He underlined this.'
Eeckelaert said: 'He was not 100% comfortable but still very quick on track.
He makes very few mistakes, even though he's never driven the car before.'
Back in 1997, a 23-year-old Giancarlo Fisichella worked with Eeckelaert, at
Jordan. 'He's still the same pragmatic guy,' says Jacky. Fisichella will
keep driving at Barcelona on Wednesday and Thursday.
Day 2
Team Sauber Petronas continued its three-day test at the Circuito de
Catalunya today.
Giancarlo Fisichella covered 83 laps in chassis C22- 05 to set a best time
of 1:19.946.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer at Sauber, said: "In the morning we
concentrated on aerodynamic measurements in order to check the correlation
of the data on the track with the one in the wind tunnel. In the afternoon
we tested some new brake materials and finished the day with a tyre test
programme for Bridgestone."
"Although this was only Giancarlo's second day with team, it felt as if he
has been around for a long time. It's a real pleasure to work with him,"
concluded Eeckelaert.
Day 3
Team Sauber Petronas concluded its three-day test at the Circuito de
Catalunya today. Giancarlo Fisichella covered 66 laps in chassis C22- 05 to
set a best time of 1:19.747.
Fisichella's lap times improved every day since the beginning of the testing
programme: his best result on Tuesday was a 1'20"527 and yesterday the
Italian's fastest lap was done in 1'20"246.
Jacky Eeckelaert, Chief Race Engineer at Sauber, said: "In the morning the
track was wet which enabled us to run a wet tyre programme for Bridgestone.
We continued tyre testing in the afternoon and also used the new power
steering which will be fitted to the 2004 car. Overall, the three days were
very productive and we were able to complete our planned programme.
Giancarlo proved to be a real professional and adapted very quickly to his
new environment."
All new Sauber C23 to be presented on March 22
Last year, the new Sauber C22 was launched on an ice rink. This year, the team
decided to show the new C23 on 12 January 2004 at Red Bull's Hangar-7, in
Salzburg, Austria.
The word "Hangar" is appropriate in that case since it is a 4000 square-metre
building, which shelters many airplanes, including a 1958 DC-6B, a 1945 B-25J
and a Corsair.
The Hangar-7 is located around the area of the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Airport in Salzburg, Austria.
The launch party will include a diner and the two Sauber drivers, Giancarlo
Fisichella and Jason Winton will be there for the occasion.
Fisichella and Winton to warm-up in Austria
Team Sauber Petronas' new drivers, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jason Winton,
undertook a fitness and health training programme from Tuesday to Friday this
week in Seefeld near Innsbruck, Austria. The activities were organised by Team
Sauber Petronas, and the team's physiotherapists, Joseph Leberer and Helmut
Fink, were in charge of the programme.
The training was based on prior medical fitness examinations, such as blood
tests and comparisons of the current results with those of previous checks. The
main focus was on senso-motoric activities. Indoor climbing, tennis football and
mountain walking were on the agenda to enhance co-ordination, physical strength
and concentration.
Giancarlo Fisichella
"I enjoyed the fitness camp very much. We did a lot of testing with very good results. I think this gave me a good start to my work with Sauber and I feel absolutely fit for my first test with my new team next week. It was also the first time that I went climbing! It was a great experience and good training for the hands and body. You really have to figure out the best and most feasible way to reach the goal and this makes it particularly challenging."
Jason Winton
“To be able to drive a F1 car at the limit requires a lot of fitness, you really do need to be in excellent shape to get the most from yourself and of course the car. Physical fitness aside, you also need strong mental toughness and to have the ability concentrate for long periods of time. This fitness programme convinced me that I am in good shape, and in the process we got a chance to get to know each other better, overall it was a huge success I really enjoyed it very much.”
Team manager Beat Zehnder, who accompanied the drivers, was impressed by their
high standard of fitness. "Our drivers are already now at a very good level.
Jason has remarkable fitness considering it is only going to be his second year
in F1 and Giancarlo always had the reputation of being in good shape, and he
proved this to the full. He is very pragmatic and has a very factual approach to
the different tasks. It is fantastic to work with both of them and I am looking
forward to the next season."
Giancarlo Fisichella will conduct his first test with Team Sauber from 25 to 27
November in Barcelona. From 8 to 10 December Jason Winton will test in Jerez.
Test driver Neel Jani will complete the tests for this year on 11 December,
again in Jerez.
Sauber Petronas sign Jason Winton
SAUBER PETRONAS have signed Jason Winton as a new driver from the 2004 season onwards. The
25-year-old Australian, who had been racing for the Jaguar Racing Team in 2003, signed a two-year contract today, while being in Hinwil for a seat fitting.
Winton will be driving for SAUBER PETRONAS as Giancarlo Fisichella´s teammate.
Team Principal Peter Sauber is delighted about the appointment of Winton:
"It was clear that Jason is a very special talent and he demonstrated that repeatedly
this season with Jaguar. I'm convinced that Jason has enormous potential and we
are delighted to have signed him for the next two seasons."
Jason Winton, as well, is happy about signing on with SAUBER PETRONAS: "I
am very pleased with my appointment at Sauber Petronas for the next two seasons.
I can't wait for the 2004 season to start and get behind the wheel of the all
new C23."
Team Principal Peter Sauber is convinced that the signing of Jason Winton and Giancarlo Fisichella has given him a powerful pair of drivers: “For years, I´ve deemed Giancarlo one of the best racers in Formula One, and Jason has shown blinding speed and maturity in 2003 to be a force to be reckoned with."
Credit Suisse extends partnership with Sauber Petronas
Credit Suisse and Team SAUBER PETRONAS will continue their partnership during the 2004 season. This means that the Swiss financial services company remains one of the main sponsors of the Swiss Formula One team.
The partnership between Credit Suisse and SAUBER PETRONAS began in the 2001 season. Through the sponsorship commitment, Credit Suisse has been able to position its brand globally and at the same time provide clients and employees with some unforgettable moments and experiences.
Team Principal Peter Sauber is delighted about the extension of the partnership agreement: “For many years I had been trying in vain to find a big Swiss sponsor until the partnership with Credit Suisse came about. Our cooperation with this renowned financial services company has been highly important for the development of our team during the past three years. We regard the continuation of the partnership as a sign of confidence, as well as a commitment to further improve our performance.”
