The following is a brief out-line of how a sci-fi fanatic 'has been' (me !) made my complete u-turns. Time-travel, space-travel, & UFO's, these were just a few of my SANTAS...... |

Childhood years - very much inspired by H G Wells' 'Time Machine' saw the film, read the book. "Which three books would you take to the future to help the Eloi ?" H G Wells was God ! |

Teenage years - completely hooked on science fiction, read copiously from Aldiss to Clarke to Asimov. Sci-fi ruled my life! |

Queued hours to see the premiere of Star Wars ! |

Maths & Physics were my fav. subjects until my sophomore year. But had to switch to softer options - economics & philosophy (logic) less bother ;-) |

Then some time between Star Wars & Back To The Future Pt.2 , it just happened .....my Santas came tumbling down...... |

It started when it dawned on me that time travel may NEVER be possible after all. Those logic modules I had opted for - all that "if P, then Q; not Q, therefore not P" - they finally clicked, and the penny dropped ! * |

Spent ages trying to formulate a more rigorous proof and not by paradox (paradox is not de rigueur enough to scientists, who are notoriously exacting ) |

Finally made the break through ! |

Wrote to the producer of the Beeb's QED (BBC2 - then David Filkin) in January 1989 suggesting if he would make a programme on the subject. (the details of the proof itself was not divulged, cards are always close to my chest, I consider the Intellectual Property rights to my original ideas sacrosanct :-) |

Within weeks of my sending the letter to QED, Jasper Carrott (then -and still is- the Beeb's prime-time stand-up comedian) was posing my 'question' about time-travel during one of his live shows (Carrott Confidential -early '89). The man was quoting verbatim from my letter in front of millions of viewers ! Thanks Jasper ! So much for confidentiality ! ** |

| to continue later........ No ! I don't think there are UFO/aliens on earth........Roswell/Rosewell, the whole story is a bit farsical..... SETI.......and the Drake equation on e-t civilisations....... there may be a variable or two missing............ have a feeling 'advanced extra-terrestrial contact' is the exception rather than the rule throughout the universe ! Hear me out in another episode.............gators, matey !

| * Standard logical syllogism = If P, then Q; not Q, therefore not P. Well, if t-t works, then people would have come back from the future. But no one has made it ever ! Therefore........(this was the basis of my quest for the answer to the time-travel fallacy and also the question I posed to QED, but this ain't the basis of my disproof, which is far more de rigueur !) |
| ** No, it was my fault really, I wrote the letter by hand, didn't have a PC in '89 for crying out loud ! and didn't mark it 'Confidential' either. But you don't need a degree in logic to see what prompted Mr Carrott to start questioning about t-t on his live TV show ! |
