On this page I will
recommend some of my favourite routes, hotels, restaurants, or places of
touristic or historical interest that I discovered on my travels. May you too
enjoy what I found worth visiting.
Salzburg
Note: I would like to ask
MG-drivers of the area to contact me via e-mail. You will receive invitations
for local events. I am looking forward to meeting you! I am also very happy to
meet MG drivers from abroad, who are travelling in the area.
Hotel Restaurant Kobenzl: A
nice drive up Gaisberg mountain. An excellent Restaurant with a spectacular
view over the city. Not cheap, but worth it.
Summer in Salzburg: Go swimming
at the “Waldbad Anif”, just a few kilometres south of the city, a small
artificial lake with refreshing, clean water!
Lower Austria, south
Sooß village: Benefiting
from the mild climate just south of Vienna, surrounded by vineyards, this is
one of the loveliest places to enjoy the famous "Heuriger", and try
Austrian wine. Sit in the garden of "Galerieheuriger", or buy
excellent wine from Franz Schlager, both Hauptstraße, Sooß.
Lower Austria, north
Dobra Stausee: One of the
most picturesque camping-sites I have ever visited. Situated at a lake, with a
view to nearby ruins, mostly visited by local people. Some of the facilities
are rather eh... primitive, especially the toilets are not for the
faint-hearted! Still, if you are in the area, do not miss it!
Kollmitzberg: One of my
absolute favourites! Autobahn A1, exit "Amstetten West", a few km
north. From Kollmitzberg village
turn to the church on the hill. There is an Inn nearby. Clean rooms, local food
served, not expensive. Do not miss the 2 minute walk from there to the very top
of the hill for a spectacular view over the river Danube! Breathtaking sunsets!
Nice, but not so easy to find are the "Heidnische Opfersteine" - ask
local people and have fun searching!
Burg Aggstein: The famous
"Wachau", part of the Danube-valley between Melk and Krems is
beautiful, but often crowded by busloads of tourists on the left river-bank.
Try the other side and take an one hour walk from Aggstein village to the
Aggstein ruin. There is a tavern up there and a great view over the Wachau.
Stift Altenburg: From Krems
take a drive up Kamptal valley (still famous wine-country), then turn left to
Altenburg. Admire the frescos of Paul Troger. Not far from there, visit spooky
Schloss Greillenstein, and get an impression, what a court-trial might have
been like a few hundred years ago, or worse still, how you would have survived
in the castles dungeon.
Vienna
The nicest "Heuriger" in Grinzing (19th district):
"Reisenberger" in Reisenbergerweg. Have a look at your city-map. No access by car. Either park at Grinzing
and walk up, or park on Höhenstraße near Cobenzl, and walk down. Garden next to
vineyard, view over the City. Closed on Tuesdays.
Vienna on hot days: Forget
the inner City, try "Krapfenwaldbad" (also 19th district) instead,
then go to the Heuriger!
