The Lincoln-Douglas Memorial to the last debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in Alton, IL, during the senatorial election in 1858. Lincoln challenged the incumbent, Stephen Douglas, and came to prominence in these debates, in which Lincoln challenged Douglas's "popular sovereignty" policy, which had led to the violence in Missouri and Kansas ("Bleeding Kansas"), making his famous "House Divided" statement. Just two years later, Lincoln was elected to the Presidency in 1860, defeating Douglas, who headed the Democratic ticket.
