Simple Plate Tutorial by Peter Chovanec (Wings3D subdivision modeling)
Nothing great, just a simple plate. But might be useful for newbies to learn some tools & work-flow.
Should be easy to alter the shape to however you want it.
This will be a basic over-view only, I won't get into giving specific values (i.e Extract Region to 0.5 etc..)
Shape the plate however you want..
[1] start with a cylinder scaled down along Y, and select the two circular top and bottom faces
[2] Right Click > Inset them about halfway
[3] Right Click > Move > Y them down some
[4] De-select the top face (leaving bottom selected), and Right Click > Extrude Region > Normal it down some
[5] Then Right Click > Scale Uniform it down a bit
[6] Select one of these vertical edges..
[7] Hit G (Edge Ring), and C (Connect)
[8] Then Right Click > Bevel some
[9] Hit Space to clear the selection, then select this top circular face
[10] go ahead and Inset this face a small amount (will create a sharp crease after smoothing)
[11] Inset again to maybe half way.. this is just to prevent smoothing artifacts. You can move this new face down a little if you want (Right Click > Move > Y)
[12] Now select one of those small vertical edges on the outer rim of the plate
[13] Hit G (Edge Ring), then F (Face mode)..
[14] Right Click > Extrude Region > Normal out a bit  (helps keep that edge sharper after smoothing)
[15] (View rotated to see from below) Select the bottom circular face
[16] Right Click > Inset a bit
[17] Then Right Click > Extrude Region > Normal up a small amount
[18] Right Click > Inset about half way
[19] Right Click > Inset about half way
Finished, now you can just smooth the whole object once or twice (suggest you save this "cage" version before you do though) and should have on ok looking plate. If you have questions or find something wrong with the above (put it together kinda fast :) then you can E-mail me and leme know.
